Help Needed Quick!!! I took Paddy and Meg for a walk in the country yesterday and this morning he has an enormous tick stuck under his chin! We just smeared it in vaseline to try to suffocate it,is there anything else we can do?? |
How To Remove Ticks From David Sweet, Your Guide to Camping. We frequently come in contact with insects when camping. Ticks are one insect found in the woods which may carry diseases. Therefore, they should be removed immediately, from both people and pets. Difficulty: Easy Time Required: 5 minutes Here's How: Use a small pointed tweezers to grasp the tick by its mouth parts. Tug gently until the tick lets go. After removing the tick, wash the area with soap and water and use antiseptic on the bite AND the tweezers. Save the tick in a small vial and mark the date and victim's name. In case of infection, this will help in diagnosing health problems due to the tick bite. Watch the bite and the victim's general health and see a doctor if you notice anything out of the ordinary. Tips: Use preventive measures when in tick areas: cover exposed skin, check for ticks when coming indoors, use tick repellents. Be sure to check your pets frequently and use tick-control products that are approved by your vet. Note: the Lyme Disease Foundation advises against burning or smothering ticks to remove them as this may cause the tick to release infected fluid. |
We tried pulling it out with tweezers but he just freaks out,we wrapped him in a blanket and i held him whilst hubby got a grip on it,being under his chin its not easy! As soon as we get tweezers on it he goes mad wriggling, any suggestions? |
If we manage to get the tick is there a chance its head will be left inside and cause infection? PANIC!!! |

Ok Ill give it a go, thanks! |
I have not read the whole thread, but my dad always put a cigarette close enough to the ticks body that it would just let go. If you pull them out with tweezers there is the danger of having some of the tick left under the skin and perhaps causing an infection. |
This may sound stupid but I use a FORK to get ticks:p . Just the botton of the fork up and around to lasso the tick betwen the prongs and keep sliding. the tick gets wedged in the prongs and the base of the prongs scoops the tick out. make sure the bottom side of the fork is against the skin...kinda like scooping the tick out... I do this ALOT and it works most of the time pretty easy |

If the tick hasn't gone completely under the skin, light a match and let it burn for 30 seconds or so. Then blow it out and put the hot match head onto the tick. It will burn/hurt the tick so it will back out of the skin. This happened to Kona last week, the head was just barely under the skin, but we couldn't get it out with tweezers. The match trick worked. Good luck!! |

Thanks for all advice! We tried the match thing yesterday,I even heated the tweazers on the match and put them ruond the thing but it just hung on!! I smothered it in vaseline as someone else told me but its still there now!!! Paddy has now got wise to us going near his chin so freaks when we do so we are just about to go to the vets who say they will get it out in a flash with a special tool!!! Ill let you know how we go!!! |
we take a needle and get it red hot with a match and hold the needed to the ticks rear end and they usually will back out head and all and you dont have to worry about the head being left in it, as that is bad when the head dont come out too or thats what we've always heard. Hubby will hold the dog and i do the needle. So far Kizzys only had one tick and it must not have been there but a day or so. we did this it got it right out. goodluck |
