Hello from NJ Hello all my name is Candy and I'm from NJ. On July 14th I will become the proud Mom of Gia, I purchased her from a breeder located in GA (carteryorkies.com) . Anyway if anybody can give me tips on what to expect once Gia gets here, I've never owned a dog before. I do have two cats Ash (male) and (Resse) both of them are 3 yrs old. I'm kind of worried about the transition with the two cats & a puppy plus Gia will be pretty small compared to the cats (both are over 10 pounds) Gia is only 21 oz, and she's about 7 weeks now. I would love any advice !!! I'll make sure to post pictures when she gets here. P.s I would like to train her on wee wee pads, or ouside (I need tips with that too) |
hey! i'm from nj too! romeo is my first dog ever. he's the best part of my life. we do wee wee pads and go outside. the combo works best imo. my advice would be get her used to bathes and grooming young. yorkies are picky eaters. get her on a healthy kibble early. get a lookout carseat for the car. we were in a bad car accident and it saved romeos life. use a harness not a collar. (tigers mom sells really cute harnesses) i'm so happy for you. yorkies are awesome! good choice! :yorkiesar :dogwalk: |
congrats! and Welcome to YT! Your cats will act alittle funny a couple of days, kinda standoffish, will maybe hide under bed..but they will get use to the baby very quick..I would just keep a eye on them around her at first, they may think she is a mouse or something...:D |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk! |
Hi Candy & welcome to YT. You are going to love your little Gia (cute name). Romeos Mommy gave you some good tips. Also make sure you have some Nutrical on hand, maybe give a little in her water just to make sure there are no problems with Hypoglycemia. And I would read, read, and read some more the YT threads on Yorkie health and diets. There is some very valuable information there. If you cats aren't de-clawed, just watch them as Gia plays with them. Yorkie pups are generally very active and like to jump and play with other animals. They also tend to nibble on lots of things (like paws of other animals and fingers/toes of humans), so watch that with the cats. I think Gia will hold her own quite well. Congrats! |
Thanks ladies, the advice is really needed. I get Gia in about two weeks and I'm like clueless with things to do, I hope when my husband & I decide to have a child I'll be a little better at things. :) I'm going to keep reading the boards just to know what to expect. I wonder how she's going to react to me when I pick her up from the airport? Will she eat the first night will she sleep? |

What is Nutrical ? And can I get it at the pet store? and what is hypoglycemia? Are there any signs I should look for? |

I have a 20lb Maine Coon Cat that was the only pet we had until we got our furbaby...Although McKenzi (cat) was brought up in a house with alot of other animals (I got him in the divorce) we was the only animal for 3 years. When Sadie Mae came to live with us I was afraid that the cat would go after her. I bought a mesh playpen and, when I wasn't holding her, I would put her in the playpen. She would have toys, food and her pee pee pad in there. The cat would just walk around the playpen looking at her but, I thought this would be a good way for him to get to know her....I would never leave them alone with supervision. I actually didn't put her on the floor with the cat around till she was 7 months old. (We have a family room downstairs so she could run around and get her exercise) When I finally decided it was time to "let them meet" I was always right there....If she got to rambunctious (sp?) McKenzi would just bat her on her little head with his paw (it was kinda funny), no claws came out...Sadie is 2 1/2year old now and 5.5 lbs so she is still alot smaller than the cat. Sadie does want to play with him but he has become a grumpy old man....he is 12 yrs old and doesn't want to play....This is why we have a new fursister coming August 13th. Good Luck with your new baby! I hope I helped a little |
Hi Candy! welcome to YT. I"m from jersey too! I live in Clifton right next door to you. I'm getting my first yorkie on July 15th so i'll be a new mom too. we should get together at the end of july and let the puppies play! that would be fun. Kellie |
Hi I am from right down the road in Totowa happy to help with anything you need! My Graice will be two in October |

That sounds great Kellie, I would love for Gia to have a playmate besides Ash & Resse (I'm keeping my fingers crossed with them liking eachother). We could take them to the park and introduce them to eachother, and compare our funny stories. We have to defiantly keep in touch . Are you getting a boy or girl? Hav you thought our a name for her or him yet? |

Did you buy Gracie from a breeder here in Jersey or did you have her flow in from a breeder? I'm just worried about what to do once I pick her up from the airport, I know I want to hold her & kiss her but what do I do next? (once I get home) Do I take her out in the public right away? Do I take her outside right away? When do I give her first bath? |
Welcome and congrats on your new baby. Where in GA are you getting her from? Anyway, I hope you get all of your questions answered here. |

I'm actually getting a deal on Gia because her brothers are selling for $1200, but the breeder and I have been talking for about 6 months now and when her Mom was pregnant with Gia I reserved my little girl so she gave me a price of $950 but once the litter got here they were extremely small and show dog quality. |

I'm getting a little girl. I've named her Morgan. She's almost 10 weeks right now. I'm picking her up on her 12 week birthday :) We definately have to go to the park this summer and let them play. It will be great because they're about the same age. My puppy is really small too. only 1lb 9 oz right now at 9 weeks. |

I am also from Jersey, South Jersey to be exact :) Although right now I am in VA for work but that is only until mid-August and then Diamond & I come home to NJ :) We should all ge together for a play date. Diamond is six months and about 2 pounds right now, she was the runt :) Be sure to check the regional forums because you can post for your specific area like the tri-state area (NJ/NY/DE, etc.) I am very close to Moorestown and Mount Laurel...how about you? I bet you are excited to get your pup! Hypoglycemia is a condition where the pup's sugar drops so low that he/she will appear lifeless or just unresponsive. It can happen from not eating/drinking much due to stress or traveling a lot when they are very young. Diamond had it once when she was around 10 weeks and she was in the hospital for almost 2 days. I almost lost her, her blood sugar was at 9! As you can imagine, I was a WRECK. The most important thing is to get a tube of nutrical (sugar supplement) or the syrup (I think it's called kyro syrup?) With the syrup, you put a little on their gums in the mouth and it will raise their blood sugar. With nutrical, I just put a little on my finger and Diamond licks it up, she loves it! Only give it to the pup if he/sher seems out of it or not really like themselves. At least, you know about it now before you get your pup. I had no knowledge of it prior to getting Diamond. You may want to get a book on Yorkies to help you too. Be sure to use a harness as opposed to a collar. Little dogs like Yorkies can get tracheal collapse from a lot of pulling/tugging on the collar. The harness is more gentle on them and more comfortable. You should check out Tiger's_Mom website, she has the CUTEST harnesses :) If you need anything let me know...I have had Diamond since March so it's been a few months but I have certainly learned a lot since then!!!! :animal36 |
Gracie actually came from a pet store ( never again ).....sleepless nights and kisses.......get a vet appointment right away....I use Little Falls Animal Hospital they are great and all love the dogs if you need a reccomendation. Gracie would love to have play date..... |
I live in CLifton but i highly highly recommend Ho-Ho-Kus Veterinary Hospital. That's where I last used to work and I know the vets personally. I trust them with anything. I used to work for a couple vets in Clifton, but i don't trust any as much as i trust the vets of ho-ho-kus. If your looking for a good vet i recommend going up there. its 20 minutes from here, but excellent and worth the drive! |
Congratulations! I am sure you are very excited about your new baby! Be sure to take lots of pictures and keep us updated!! and Gia is a VERY cute name!! Good Luck With Everything! |
We need to all get together with our babies and let them play & run free. I know there's a park over my way (3rd ward Park) Kellie if you take Van Houten all the way down you will run into it. I'm not sure if it's a dog park but they have a lake & ducks & all that sort of stuff (I always see a lot of dog owners in the park with their dogs) |

I will defiantly keep everyone posted (this is probably going to be my second home for a while). Thanks .....everyone loves her name I just hope her personality fits with it, I want her to have a little diva personality but sweet at the same time |

There is also Brookdale park which is really nice. Lots of people there with their dogs. Can't let them run free there either tho. I think i know the park your talking about. |

Thanks for the warm welcome :) |

When you do take her out, be careful where you take her. She will not have all her shots yet. Try to avoid places with strange dogs. Lots of people like to take their new puppies to places like Petsmart. It's a perfect place for a new puppy to pick something up. I think socializing with people and animals is very important, you just have to be careful going about it before they are immunized for deadly diseases. You can take her outside to potty right away as long as it's not where unknown dogs are going too. Welcome to YT. I can't wait to see pictures. :) |
Hi Candy! Welcome to YT Sounds like you have gotten a tremendous amount of good advice. I'm just welcoming you to the forum :) |
