romeo rides in the backseat in his lookout carseat. it saved his life in a very bad car accident. :thumbup:

The impact from an airbag is very violent. Though it does save lives, it can kill or seriously injure in infant. A small puppy, or any dog for that matter, wouldn't have a chance. All carseats need to be put in the back seat (center on a bench seat), or turn off your airbag in the front if you can.

We have 4 captains chairs in our van so Topher is in one of those in the back. I bought a mirror to go on my rear view mirror...the ones that you get to watch babies (I like to keep my eye on him! ;))

Does he ever try to climb out? I have the stow-away and mine end up dangling by their harness.:confused: I have since been using the seat belt attachment with the harness.

Crates really are not as safe as we think. I saw a documentary showing crates in the USA split apart even in a low impact collision.

so the two top choices seem to be the lookout and the outward hound...I'd love to hear other people's experiences...can't they fall right out of each and be dangling since they're attached by the hook up

I have a car seat just like this. I love it. She is harnessed to the seat but with enough movement to allow Roxie to lie down if she wants to. I purchased mine at PetSmart for $45.00. I also put a little lambswool mat in it for softness. Oh no, she is not spoiled in any way. Hehehe

Is there a strap or anything to keep her in the seat? I know that Bella would jump out at some point or other????

Yes there is. It attaches to a harness and keeps our babies safe. Wonderful product.

the strap is adjustable and can be tightened. I tighten Topher's just enough so that he can sit comfortably and lie down if he wants. He couldn't climb out if he tried...he's in there safe and sound.

The Outward hound seat I got for Topher is very inexpensive. I paid 40.00for it up here in Canada but I'm sure I've seen them advertised in the U.S. for under twenty. To save your little one's life...even in a mild fender bender...well, it's well worth the money.

I was in a 'mild' accident last fall when an elderly gentleman pulled out in front of me. I had to slam on my brakes to try to avoid hitting him. I did end up smashing into the side of his vehicle anyway, but everything that I had on my seat in the back flew off and landed in the front of my van. It could very easily have been my dog had he been in the van with me and untethered. The accident happened so quickly and couldn't be avoided. I had just run a quick errand and was only going out of the house for 15 minutes or so. It happens so quickly.

I have fidorido car seats and won't use anything else. You belt it to the seat using the regular car seatbelts and then you have more belts on the carseat itself that you attach to their harness. Mine love it - it has them sit up enough that they can look out the window but they are safely harnessed so if you get into a wreck they won't go anywhere. Those others don't have a way to harness them in safely. The fidorido is a bit more expensive (I paid $70) but well worth the money and my dogs (I have 3) each have one cuz we travel. Look them up on their website fidorido.com.

I agree with you, I think the fidorido is the safest, too. I like the fact that the seatbelt goes through the car seat, and that the car seat is made of the same material as a child's car seat. Yes, it is a bit more expensive, but, our babies worth it.

Can you use your own harness to secure your dog with some of these car seats? If so, which brand dog car seat?

I use my celltei bag to transport Ginger. It has two straps that the seatbelt goes through to keep it secure and a tether to attach to her harness inside. I can open the windows completely or just open the "shades" so she can see out of the screens. It also has a place to conceal an ice pack to keep the carrier cool.

When my hubby ran out of gas a few months ago, he chose to abandon his car as it was in a very unsafe place along the highway where there wasn't much room to get off the road. That day, I realized that if I ever had to abandon my car I would want to transport Ginger in the safest way possible. THAT is why I switched to the celltei. I figured in the event of an accident or other problem I could carry her in the bag until we were where she could safely walk on a leash.
