Does "vet checked" mean physical or general exam? I'm getting my first Yorkie this Sat., and I have to get my Yorkie checked by a vet of my choice within 72 hours of picking her up. Do I book a physical or general exam for her? She will be my first pet and I'm not sure. Thanks! |
I just booked an exam - take a stool sample with you. They'll check their stool, their teeth, eyes, etc. etc. Just a general health check-up. |
I think it's more of a general exam..... They make sure your pup doesn't have any worms or parasites or anything that would make your puppy unsfe to have in your possesion so that you can take it back to the breeder. Others may be able to elaborate more on this Crystal |
Oh yea, just let the vet know that it is a new pup when you call to make the appointment and they will know mainly what to look for. This is what everyone does when first purchasing a new pup of kitten. Crystal |

When I first got Topher and needed the exam within a short period of time (within 5 days for my breeder), I spoke to the gals at the vet office and explained what I needed. They booked an exam and I sure got a thorough one! I brought his vaccination history and the vet checked just about everything that could be checked :) When he was done he gave me a certificate saying that Topher was of sound health as of that date, etc., and I sent this back to the breeder. I'd just explain to them what your breeder needs and they'll book the time that's required. Congrats on your new little one! |
An old (clean) pill bottle is good for a stool sample |

you can just pick up the poop with a sandwich baggie and give it to the vet. easiest thing to do if you don't have a pill bottle. sometimes your vet will even give you a container to put the poop in for your next visit. don't worry about having to hand the vet a bag of poop. they just give it to the technicians (lol ie - me) and we deal with it. its much easier when it comes in baggies. not foil, tupperwear (you don't have to preserve it LOL), saran wrap, or anything that can get poop on the tech's hands. we don't appreciate that. also make sure its a fresh poop either from that morning or the night before. no dry old ones. wow... i know way too much about handling poop.... :yelrotflm |

Tophersmom made a good point - bring all the information on the dog that you have - all his vaccination history, etc. I had a sheet, but I had no idea what any of it meant, so the vet was able to explain what he had/had not been given and explain the ones that I may have wanted in the future... (I just took his poop in small ziploc bag.. that way, no one's hands have to touch it!) |

I think I'll use a ziploc bag as it sounds easier for the techs to handle. |
