What a difference a Yorkie makes . . . This will be a rather self-indulgent expression, but I just have to say it to anyone that will listen. If I'm being too sentimental, no one needs to answer. As recently as two or three months ago, I remember talking about what I saw as "typical" pet owners. My attitude was, in general, "Pets are great, I've had several dogs in the past. I enjoyed their companionship, I loved them, and I took care of them. But they're DOGS, for cryin' out loud, not people!" The whole idea of arranging one's day, or a vacation, or anything else around a dog was just plain silly! Well, 30 days ago we picked up my wife's Mother's Day present - an 8 week old Yorkie that she soon named Bailey. Nothing has been normal since. At least I haven't. Kathie had been saying from time to time for over a year that she wanted a Yorkie. As much as she loves her new baby, though, I'm the one that she keeps saying is obsessing over this puppy. And I can't argue with her - when the truth is staring you in the face, you're an idiot to deny it. When you start trying to hide from your spouse how much you're spending on stuff for your puppy, you have to admit you have a problem. I'm approaching retirement age, too. Maybe I'm slipping into a second childhood. Anyway, I found YT a few days ago and soon discovered that I'm not the only person that these precious little furbabies affect this way. What really got me thinking about this was reading posts from people who have lost their sweet little Yorkies. As much as my heart breaks for those of you have lost one of these endearing little bundles of love, I know I really can't put myself in your position. I cannot imagine what it would be like, even after such a short time together, to not have Bailey around. And I don't want to try. Anyway, I'd love to hear from others about the premise that underlies everything on YT - we just REALLY love our Yorkies. |
Thanks for that beautiful post! I have to admit, I'm 100% with you. My family used to have a dog (non-Yorkie) and I loved her. I was heartbroken when we had to give her away due to relocating, and I didn't think I ever wanted another dog because of the painful process of having to let go in one way or another. But I got Frodo, my yorkie-mix, in January of this past year, and my life has completely turned around. My life is no longer about just me, it's about me AND Frodo! I used to see people walking around with their dogs dressed up, and I used to think a coworker was crazy for sending her dog to doggie camp and throwing her dog a huge birthday party. But I'm the same way now, and I can't wait for Frodo to be neutered next month so I can send him to camp, too!! Welcome to YT - your sentiments are shared here :) |
hello from another Oklahoma yorkie lover. your post is so nice, glad you love your little fur baby so much! good luck! |

I'm in total agreement as well. I've had many other pets in my life, but have never felt about one of them as I do about Sissy. I also thought people who took their pets with them and dressed them up were crazy. Well, guess who goes everywhere with me I can take her and who has a closet of dresses and coats on hangers?! When she was sick yesterday, I was almost out of my mind. I can't imagine life without her. TOTALLY, HEAD OVER HEELS IN LOVE! |
Hi there everyone! We are traveling (yes, with Rex & Rowdy) - so my posts will be few and far between in the next couple of months. I just had to respond to your post because I know exactly what you mean. I am NOT a dog person - or at least I wasn't a dog person - until I met a Yorkie. We got Rowdy a little over a year ago to be a companion to my husband who had to retire unexpectedly due to a very serious illness which causes him to have to be at home most of the time. I had no idea how it would affect me though. I am completely and totally in love with these guys. We got Rex a couple of months ago and he is just as delightful as Rowdy. The two of them are double the joy. I cannot imagine life without them! We were gone on vacation for a week and could not take them. They stayed with my mom and I called home twice a day to check on them. Now, we are traveling in our fifth wheel and they can be with us. They are such good little travelers. But back to your post. There is something unexplainable about Yorkies - they just steal your heart - even if you don't think you have a 'dog' heart!!! |
I'm with you! I have always loved dogs, but my Yorkies are my babies. When I was really young my mom always said "Never again, I will never have another dog!" We had just had to put our Yorkie of 13 down. I was too young to be really affected, but I begged and begged for a dog for a couple years... And let's just say I won that argument. We have 4 :p. My dad threw a fit when I wanted a dog... But now he's the one who when you walk in is baby talking to them and cuddling them! Yorkies are just plain magic!!! |
Hi there and welcome to YT! My husband is just like you. He didn't want a small dog and laughed at me when I talked about how I would take Bailey (nice name btw) everywhere with me and he said I was a Paris Hilton wannabe. Now, 1-1/2 years later and now with our second Yorkie who is 18-weeks, Morgan, my husband is more in love than ever. Actually, he reason behind purchasing Morgan was so one of the dogs he could call his own. Funny how people change after being owned by one of these sweet furbabies. I look forward to seeing pictures and getting to know you. You have stumbled upon a GREAT family here who are so great and willing to help and listen regardless of the topic!! |
What a great post. Welcome to YT, look forward in hearing stories and seeing pic's of your little Bailey. I feel blessed to be loved by yorkies. |
First off welcome to YT....we are all yorkie lovers here lol...but anyway yes yorkies do have away with your heart...my hubby was the same way as you he wasnt really a dog/animal person b4 Bo and now he loves him just as much as i do....we can go to a store and go our own ways and when we meet back up i can promise you we will both have our baby Bo something....he makes trips all the way to knoxville which is like 45 mins from our house to the petsmart to buy for him and he is a truck driver and dont really have the time on the weekends when he is home but he always makes time to see to it he has what he needs lol.....it is nice to see a man who loves theses dogs as much as we do and who dont care to admit it......i ride with hubby in the truck so Bo is always with us and my hubby will be the first one to tell you he dont care if anyone thinks his yorkie is a sissy dog because he is proud of him to ride in his truck....welcome to YT i am sure you will fit right in here. |
Great post!!! Am I not normal? LOL. I hear of so many people who went from not dog friendly to dog lover. I was always an animal lover, especially dogs. There was no transition or change for me. I guess I was just born to care for and love animals. I have had many breeds of dogs and I loved them all. The thing that gets me most with yorkies is their fiesty spirit and the fact that they are so small and majestic and you can take them everywhere because of their size. I have a real hard time understanding people that think dogs are just dogs, I really try to understand but I can't. I mean I can understand not having a dog but being the opposite of a dog lover I just don't get. Once someone said it is just a dog,not a family member, it has no feelings, if one dies just get another one. And well that made me really angry  but there are people who feel that way and I just don't get it. I would do anything for my dogs, because they are my babies whom I love so much. So congradulations to those who went from non dog lover to absoultely head over heels dog lover!!! :) :) |
My Yorkie makes my day!!!! Welcome, glad to have you as a new member of YT.:welcome4: I also have had many dogs in the past, my last dog was a female pitbull, she was the sweetest thing and my hubby and I just adored her. We both retired, sold our house and bought a motorhome to travel in so we had to put her down to big for the small space and no parks will except pits. Just about a year ago we got (PENNY)and OMG has she changed our lives!!!!!!!!! She just makes me smile every time I look at her and she has taken over our bed, our car, our motorhome she is queen of the family. We dress her up and love it, we carry her around in a pouch and love it, we buy her so many things, that she really dont need ........ but then its so much fun to get her things, YES WE ARE IN YORKIE HEAVEN,..... AND LOVING EVERY MINUTE OF IT !!!!!!!:aimeeyork :aimeeyork :aimeeyork |

What makes Yorkies so good is, how a little pup like that can have such a big heart, character and good energy. Nothing in life will land you so much attention and love, with an exception of mother. |
Fantastic post. Just yesterday my co-worker asked me if I ever imagined that Jeter would change my life so much, and I hadn't. He is such a tremendous joy in my life. I never imagined that he could turn a bad day into a good one so quickly. Those loving eyes and sweet personality are the best!! Welcome to YT , you will love it here. Tons of great people with a great amount of helpful information, not to mention great stories and pics. |
Ah, how sweet. Yes, they grab your heart and don't let go! Before I got my Bailey, my bf did not understand my obsession to find a Yorkie.. until the day we found him, he held him on the way home in the car, cause he felt bad that he cried in his carrier. I never would have imagined how hard he would fall for "my" dog..but oh did he. Your post was great! Welcome.;) |
Yorkies are DOGS???? |
This is such a beautiful post!!! Your words are so beautiful.. and I think many of us can relate to that. I haven't gotten a yorkie yet, I am gonna have her next Friday. I waited for about a year for this day, and I am sure I will be on the same page as you are. My boyfriend is also excited. He is not as a dog person as I am, but I can imagine that he will be just like you. The other day, I went to farmer's market. I saw a older gentleman with a yorkie. I went to talk to him and told him that I was getting a yorkie. He said that he was retired and he just takes care of his friend's yorkie everyday like his own. I cannot forget his smile talking about his little buddy. I had really good chat with him. Dogs are really powerful animal... even they might not (well they don't) speak the language we speak, they have this magic to bring us full of joy. I |
i'm definately an animal person. and i've had a horse, a calf, a cocker spaniel, a hedgehog, cats, and many dogs. but there's just something about a yorkie. i think it's just that they are more dependent or they get more attached than most other animals. my baxxxter is JUST like a slightly dull two year old human. i honestly think i have more seperation anxiety than he does. i only leave him when i go to work. he rides in my backpack whenever i go out. my friends think i'm crazy because "he's just a dog." but really he's more like my son... |
Welcome to YT...what can i say :yorkiesar |
Something has come to my attention reading all the YT threads. Time after time Yorkies' humans mention that they have multiple furbabies. I've known or known of quite a few people before that had multiples of whatever their preferred breed was - but I really think a far higher percentage of Yorkie owners have more than one. It's clearly not a cost issue. Yorkies probably cost as much to acquire and maintain as any other breed. Size may be a factor. It's certainly easier to find space for two or three Yorkies than it would be to house multiple great danes or collies. In my opinion, though, it comes down to something in the very nature of these dear, sweet little babies. And it doesn't take long for them to latch on to your heart. When we picked up Bailey, she was with all of her littermates. Including Bailey, there were three females and one male. The male and one female had been spoken for, but the new families hadn't seen them and picked out the specific puppy they wanted - so we had first pick from the three females. By the time we left with Bailey, I was trying to figure out a way that we could afford to get the other available female. We couldn't then - but I've already told my wife that we WILL have another one in six months to a year. |
Bailey's Peeps it is like you are reading my mind!! I have already told Sissy's breeder that as soon as I can afford another, I'll be calling her!! These little girls and guys really do grab your heart like nothing else!! |
Howdy.......... Quote:
NOW! It took him some time to finally warm up, but now HE'S IN LOVE with the furkids. We have two boys, Dudley and Dinkey. I want a little girl furbaby in the near future. :-)I think we made a really bad mistake when we didn't get another yorkie till Dudley was almost 4 yrs old. I think Dudley just tolerates Dinkey. I think if you get Bailey a playmate in 6 months or so you will doing great! They will get along and enjoy each other. OH, Welcome to Yorkie Talk! It's great to have you with us. I know you will enjoy YT.........wonderful people and tons of information. :) :yorkiesar |

Anyway...to the original poster: The yorkie fever was supposed to be MINE, too, but from the moment the first little fuzzy one joined our lives, all the previously scoffing/skeptical/scorning males that I live with fell, and fell hard. My husband carries a picture of his special girlie around with him in his hunting truck, and "doesn't care WHAT the guys say". So you're not the only one to fall in love! :p |
