That does sound like what she could be doing! Hopefully it is nothing major and the vet can figure it out friday! Thanks for all of the advise! |
We've had Bailey for just 4 weeks. We've been aware of something similar, but didn't remember just when it started. When we hold her, it felt like sometimes her chest vibrated pretty roughly when she was sneezing, snorting or just breathing. I was afraid it might be pneumonia. She's still under three pounds so I was really afraid that any thing would be very dangerous for her. Took her to the vet last Sunday (we have a 24/7 vet hospital not far from our home!). We paid for x-rays (ouch!) and found no chest congestion. Vet said it might be just a head cold and sent us home with antibiotics that we're giving her twice a day. Don't see much change yet, though. Maybe it's just the reverse sneezing others have mentioned. Everything about Yorkies is new to us. I'll update you if we find out anything more, but you're due to go to the vet before we're scheduled to go back - maybe you can help us all with what you find out then! Hope all is well with Nala. |
I will let you know what I find out. I have been reading online to see if I can pinpoint what it could be and I found something that really scared me and I really hope that it is not what is wrong with Nala. It is a cleft palate and it looks really painful, but the symptoms sound like what she is experiencing. I REALLY hope its not what she has!!! |
Does the roof of her mouth look normal? I mentioned the cleft palate because of the symptoms you described. I really think a responsible breeder would have known about it. If you bought from an unknowledgeable breeder and the defect is small, then maybe it could have went unnoticed. |
First, welcome to YT. We help when we can but this sounds like a problem that your vet needs to manage. There are other problems with the palate than cleft so your vet will check for those. I was gonna suggest the water bottles but your other dog would have to learn to use it as well. BTW, any size dog can learn to drink from the bottles, but that will not take care of the cause of the problem. Please keep us posted about your vet's diagnosis and how your baby is doing. I, too, would be concerned about aspiration pneumonia or palate problems but we all hope there is not a problem..just a quirk.. |
Kali had her vet appt. this am. I told the vet about her symptoms. She immedietly said that happens when they drink. But, she also mentioned the cleft palate. (which I had already checked). She said if it is a cleft palate they usually have problems with food as well. And that they usually have gunk and stuff around their nose. She said her lungs sounded clear and she also checked her palate. She said that from what I had explained that it sounded like it was from drinking and getting water up her nose. Kali also still has a small soft spot on her head. She will check that again next time. My poor little girl did not like her shot. I felt so bad for her. |
It is good to hear that she does not have that problem w/ the palete, hopefully I get the same news about Nala. She doesn't have any gunk around her nose and doesn't seem to have a problem when eating. just when drinking and sometime after that and when stuff comes out of her nose it is just watery stuff. Thanks for letting me know what you found out. My appt is tomorrow afternoon and i will post what I find out when I get back from it. Thanks!! |
Good luck tomorrow with Nala. I know when Kali has these spells it even scares her and she runs to me. Hopefully they will outgrow it. But the vet said sometimes they do and sometimes they don't. |

Our Teddy has done the same thing since the day we brought him home, he's now 1 & 1/2 and I think it's where he laps it to fast and it gets in his nose, it sounds like he's choking but then he's fine...He gets his self unchoked and goes on...@ 1st I was scared too he does do it a lot but not every single time he gets a drink...He has NO health problems, I ask the vet about him doing this when he went for his 1st shots and he told me that he was just lapping it up to fast??? Nala is doing very well. The vet said that it is "reverse sneezing" like someone had mentioned to me before. I was so thankful that it was not more serious like the cleft palate, but he checked that and everything looked fine. He said I shouldn't worry if she goes back to her normal, active self after the attacks which she definetly does. He said I could give her Benadryl if it bothers her too much, but I would rather not have to give that to her if possible. Thanks to everyone for their advise and concern!!! |
