Extra Large Yorkshire Terriers? Has anyone heard of an extra large yorkshire terrier? I asked a dog owner about her dog and that's what she called it. I can't seem to find anything references on the internet and was wondering if there's another name for it, or if it's really a mix? It had all the lovely features of a little yorkie, but just bigger. |

hey... 1 Attachment(s) :aimeeyork My Lexie is a bigger girl now weighing almost 12 lbs. She is pure yorkie and comes from parents 5lbs and 4.5lbs. It can happen. It is apparently becomming more common. She is my big baby but still my little girl. I hope this helps. I don't know about the term extra large but she is biger than standard. (and not at all overweight) ~Tru |
These larger Yorkies are the ideal pets for families. Tiny, or even just small-say 5 pounders- can be too fragile for great family pets. I am happy to hear that someone was totally pleased to have one of our super-sized models. They make such wonderful companions and are Yorkies in every sense of the word... |
Extra Large Yorkshire Terrier Her "Extra Large Yorkshire Terrier" weighed around 15lbs. |
1 Attachment(s) well, Tootie is not considered "Extra Large"... but he is a BIG BOY! He is 12 1/2 pounds of pure FUN! He is 10 months old and quite the handful! Now that he is bigger I am quite glad! He is the perfect size to be small but not too small! d |
There's not really any classification of Extra large, she was probably just kidding about having a larger Yorkie. Yorkies are one of the most diverse breeds, ranging from 2lbs. to 15+lbs, smooth hair to cotton hair, long nose to short nose, & everything inbetween. The standard is 4-7lbs, like Nicole said, but there are many variations that happen often. My first Yorkie, Tucker came from purebred parents weighing 6 & 5lbs, and he weighs 12, so- it can happen :p. Welcome to YT! |

well... :aimeeyork There were 2 bigger brothers in Lexie's Litter: one now weighs 18lbs and the other grew to be 25lbs. I guess it can happen. It is a throw back on the breeds they were bred down from. And all of them are pure breed Yorkies. The two other brothers were 5lbs. So anything can happen. (more love to give with larger babies, lol):aimeeyork ~Tru |
2 Attachment(s) baxter is 8lbs and i think he's the perfect size for me. smaller dogs tend to be a little more fragile. it just depends on what enviroment the dog will be experiencing. i'd happily take a 15lb yorkie. |
Personal Preference It's personal preference. If you don't care about the size, and you aren't going to breed or show, then it doesn't matter. My Chloe is 3 lbs and Baxter is 6 lbs. I choose Chloe small because I wanted a tiny Yorkie. She is fiestier than Baxter is! It's all how you feel about it. :yorkiesar |
Chachi is a larger yorkie that came from two standard parents |
Starsky is around 10 lbs. He is kind of tall and long for a yorkie. But he is just perfect for me. I really don't worry about him jumping up and down of furniture and I think he is big enough to hold his own. He sure bosses all the squirrels and birds out of the yard and he is the boss of my 46 lb beagle! I don't worry about stepping on him. He still seems small in my eyes and has the biggest heart! |
I think my pup (10 months old) weighs 9 or 10 pounds. His mother was 12 pounds and his father was 4 1/2 pounds. Go figure! I love his size. He runs around our yard - plays with all my neighbor's dogs and visits all the neighbors and their children all the time. He is just the perfect size to be able to do all the things that he does. And --- if he were a tiny little thing - I just couldn't let him go out and play like he does. Actually - he still seems like a "very little dog" to me. He is sooooooooooo cute! Carol Jean |
i think they call the bigger yorkie babies teapots. my mom has a yorkie she claims is 12lbs. (i say more) he is the best yorkie ever. we adore him. the best dog personality i've ever known.:aimeeyork |
English Bred? I got all you guys beat......my Breeder has a 50 lb. Yorkie and he is knee-high in height. She swears he's a 100% Yorkie w/AKC. papers, he supposedly has a thyroid problem & allergies, she also claims that the Breeder she got him from said that he was also English Bred? Directly from England? He's the sweetest thing he just looks like a "Mega Mutant Yorkie" that's what they would call him if he was on "South Park" (sounds like something Cartman would say?) LOL. |

Our remi is about 11-12 lbs, very proportional and he is a pure yorkie. We like it that wAy, he is very active and we can actually play with him without being worried about breaking his back or legs. |
1 Attachment(s) ben my first yorkie was about 20 pound, scampi was about 12 pound and had cruff champs in his pedigree. brandi my rescue yorkie is about 13 pound but still needs to put some more weight on shes very long and quite tall.this is her in the middle of tye and zac who are 12 pound but a bit over weight. |
Big Boy! My Boy is about 16 LBS and he does not have an ounce of fat on him. My vet said he is all muscle. :) He is 100% Yorkie and I have the papers. I have a 10 month old girl who is 3 lbs, I feel like I have the best of both Worlds!!! |
Dayzee is 11 months old and weighs 11 pounds. She is my avatar. I just hope this trend of months and pounds stops soon. She is all Yorkie but dislikes being dressed up. None of that girly stuff for her -- I think she would be a tomboy in another life. |
I can not wait for Peach to grow...she can squeeze through anything I swear! I am going to love letting her out in the yard to pee without a leash, but right now she squeezes between the fence boards  My cat can not even do that! |
Our Oliver is 14 lbs. He's just the right size for our family. We don't have to worry about not seeing him and stepping by accident or anything like that. We have a very active lifestyle, and with the pooch always at our heels, it's easy for us to know he is right there next to us. For us, he's just the right size. But often, people will say, "Oh that's a yorkie, he's sooo big, I thought yorkies were smaller". Oh well!, We love him, all 14 lbs of him! lol :aimeeyork |
:D BTW- I do have his papers, and his mom and dad were just 4 and 6 lbs. ....But, I love the term "TeaPOT" yorkie. Next time anyone asks, that's what I'll say he is. Can't wait to see the expression on their face, lol. :aimeeyork |
size Where is this 4 to 7 pound standard? The standard states..."not to exceed 7 pounds"...I have had many under 4 pounds and they are 100% Yorkie...some are larger then the standard, but reputable breeders do strive to stay within the limits...a few pounds over happens...12/15 is really pushing it..I saw a 23 pounder and she was HUGE!! Did not look much like a Yorkie, but had AKC papers..papers mean nothing unless the breeders behind them are honest.. I can not imagine a purebred at 50..I would love to see it... |
Yorkies were originally big The original Yorkshire Terrier, known as the "Broken-Haired Scotch Terrier" was a 12-to-14 pound dog with wire hair whose intended purpose was the catching of rats and other vermin that lived in small spaces. In 1870, the breed was renamed the Yorkshire Terrier, after the county of Yorkshire, England where the breed is believed to have originated. The father of the breed is considered to be Huddersfield Ben, who was born in 1865 and died in 1871 from a carriage accident, the inbred offspring of a mother and son. Huddersfield Ben was bred by Mr. W. Eastwood Huddersfield. A multiple champion, Huddersfield Ben set the foundation for what would develop into the modern Yorkie. Based on registrations, Yorkshire Terriers became the #3 most popular dog breed in the United States in 2005 according to the American Kennel Club, trailing only the Labrador Retriever and the Golden Retriever. :animal36 :animal36 :animal36 :animal36 :animal36 :animal36 :animal36 :animal36 :animal36 :animal36 Here is the link to a thread I posted before, according to the research I have done, the original yorkies, before they were the show quality small fries we know today, were actually larger to medium sized dogs! Here is the link to the thread, and there is a link to more info there on Xtra Large yorkies! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40548 |
1 Attachment(s) Katy is a big girl. She weighs in at 9lbs. |
I just took the baby, Rocco to the vet yesterday and he weighs in at 15 lbs. Its funny bcuz Maxx and Evey both weight 7 and 8 lbs so it is cute when they all sit together, its a stair step. But Rocco is 8 months old and Maxx and Evey are 6 & 7 yrs old and even though Rocco is twice the size of my older ones, it is SO obvious he is the baby! :aimeeyork |
I love reading all about everyone's bigger Yorkies. My buddy is 13.7 as of last Fri at the vets. He is a prue bred but I have no idea how large his parents were. I was not familiar with the larger ones so when he got that big I was amazed! He is now 2 1/2. I would not trade him for the world, nothing like a bigger Yorkie just more to love. |
