I'm Tired of Hearing about a Yorkie's Weight
 

I'm really sorry if I offend anyone, but I have to get something off my chest. I'm tired of hearing: I bought a 2lb Yorkie, and I don't want her to get over 3lbs, what do I do? Who the heck cares how big your Yorkie is going to get? (I'm talking pet wise, not breeders who need a smaller standard with a bigger male standard, ie. boy 5lbs, girl 7lbs) No, seriously, are you not going to love her if she gets over 7lbs? What's the big difference between a 3, 4, 7, 10lb, etc. Yorkie? I just don't get it. All those weights are STILL small! And, personally, I don't agree with the AKC standard of "only" up to 7lbs (just my opinion). Didn't Yorkies used to be 20lbs?

Now I wanted to know Baby's adult weight for one reason, what size clothes should I buy that she won't grow out of! ;) Because when I got Baby they told me that she would be 5-6lbs. I said, okay, whatever. When I brought her to the vet, he said Baby would be 7-8lbs. I said, okay, whatever. She's my "Baby" and frankly, I don't give a darn.

I really didn't write this thread to start a fight, I just don't get the whole weight issue. If you have a Yorkie, be happy with her regardless, don't fret over "Oh my Gosh, I don't want her to be over ____ lbs." Hey, maybe that's why so many furbabies have hypoglycemic episodes...people don't want to overfeed. I pride myself on the fact that Baby never had one episode, and she didn't want to eat when she was young either. I gave her water and Nutrical and hand fed her (changed food a million times too). I was on top of her every second. And please don't take this the wrong way and think I'm blaming all the parents that their furbaby had an episode. That's not what I'm saying. I'm just making a comparison to some possibilities, that's all.

I'm also not saying that 3lb Yorkies are not cute; I think they're all cute. I just want to know, really, why so tiny?

PS. I want to thank all of you in advance for your comments. And those who know me on YT know that I speak my mind and am not trying to hurt anyone's feelings. ;)

I LOVE tinies but, lordy, do they worry me. I have bred and been owned by Yorkies for years and still am uncomfortable with the tinies under foot.
Clothes for these critters are like clothes for our human kids-totally unpredictable when sized..
Maybe we should buy patterns and learn to sew..LOL

I see the post over and over and yes, it seems that's the first thing a new Yorkie owner wants to know. It doesn't bother me at all. I've owned Yorkies for many, many years and I still wonder how big they will be as an adult. I don't think wondering means they will love a dog any less no matter what size it gets.

When I was pregnant I really hoped for a girl. Does that mean I wouldn't have loved a boy just as much? Of course not.

No, I don't think wondering about their weight is bad, it's just when I see over and over that they hope that they don't get over ____ pounds. I just want to know why? :D

They would worry me too! :D I just don't see how they are any cuter than a larger Yorkie. I saw a tiny once and he had huge paws. It wasn't attractive at all.

No, of course not. But some people, like myself, just hope for a happy healthy baby and are not hoping for any specific sex. :)

I'm one of the guilty parties about wondering about weight. I'm not guilty tho of saying under _ lbs. Oscar is my first yorkie and I"m really just curious about the size. Bigger really is better here. I would worry myself sick about bringing in an under 2lb baby. I dont' think everyone means anything bad by saying they hope they dont' get over a certain weight. Some people probably are worried they are too big and not what they wanted but I think most are just curious and with all the differnet sizes and looks of yorkies maybe some are wondering if they really do have a yorkie or just a cute little dog with forged papers.I'm sure MOST everyone would rather have a heatly yorkie bigger than they expected than a small sick one.
but I do understand what you mean. and I know some people put perfectly healthy dogs on a diet because they think they should be a little smaller which I do not understand at all. I'm bigger than I think I shoudl be too but I hate the thought of putting me on a diet I dont' know why they think a dog woudl like it any better.

Well, I did write and ask how big anyone thought my yorkie would be and hoped for not over 5 or 6 lbs. But it is my first yorkie and I've never had many dogs, In my mind 8 lbs would really be BIG. to me for a yorkie. But Kizzy will be 4 months June 2, and she weighed 5 lbs friday at the vet. And wow, 5 lbs isnt big at all. She dont look to me like she even weighs anywhere near 5 lbs. But now if she gets bigger I wont worry because I love her to peices. She is healthy so far and I always feed her good. I let her eat all she wants and give her treats through out the day, but I only feed her puppy food. I give her several different kind of treats, fattening or not, I dont even ck for that. I sure dont want a skinny dog who looks like its not taken care of. matter of fact if she dont eat good some days, I try everything I know to get her to eat, even feed her peices along by hand. anyway. I love her and I admit I did want a small one but it was before I learned about all the problems they can have. anyway, I may end up with a 12 lb yorkie but I LOVE KIZZY, no matter how big she gets. But i'll feel like i got ripped off money wise by the breeder now after I really liked her and felt like she was really a nice person. But now Ive found out she did lie to me about not having a kennel.

I'm with you Fidgette's mum. I never once worried about the size of my babies when I got them. I love them - no matter what size. I haven't seen one person complain that their yorkie's personality isn't to type. They're meant to be bold, it's in the NZ breed standard, I don't know about the US one. My wee dixie dog is a fraidy cat and that's one of the reasons I do not want to breed her (aside from the fact that I'm so worried about putting her health in danger.)

I agree too-let's focus on having a happy. healthy and socialised dog,who gets the most out of life,regardless of size!

As the owner of a lively, intelligent and healthy Yorkie, I love her to bits!

I think people in general are obsessed about weight! OMG I just thought of something...I have two extra yorkies I have put on my hips :eek: Ten extra pounds on my behind equal two yorkies. Or one teapot :D

I get really disgusted with weight obsession, and it amused me, Nicole, that you were writing about wieght, lolol, because I know you have been on here long enough to be tired of it, too.

I understand that if you are a breeder, your needs are completely different. But anyone buying a yorkie as a pet needs to get real. Why would a breeder give up a "perfect" dog? They wouldn't. So you get the imperfections. And no breeder or anyone else can exactly guess what size any pup is going to be.

Acceptance of your pup, loving them as hard as you can, and being happy with your choices are what makes the difference. Just relax and love your yorkie, regardless of size. :p

I have 3 other diferent breeds of Dogs, and I remember when I took them to the Vet, that was one of my questions. It is something we are all curious about, in general. With Yorkies, if you pay more money, because the person selling them charged more because they were going to be smaller and they end up twice as big as expected, you can see her frustration. She loves her dog, she is just upset that she was mislead. I would say that most of us don't like being lied to and I think that was her point. :animal-pa

I am tired of people thinking a big yorkie is not a yorkie. My groomer thinks Chachi is a silky. She compares him to my Jewels who is 6 lbs and says Jewels looks like a yorkie but Chachi looks like a silky. They are from the same breeder and have the same father. I have other people who ask me if Chachi is a yorkie. Anyway I think when some people obsess over their dogs weight they are doing it because they want to buy clothes. It does seem like it is a terrible thing on here to some people to have a big yorkie though. I want a small one for my next one but I wouldnt change a thing about Chachi. He is rugged and he is a real cute yorkie.

He's 10 pounds for gosh sakes... Not 50, He is still a very small dog, just as I wanted a small inside dog. :rolleyes:

I hear it I bet, once a week... They are programed that Yorkies are to be TINY 2-3 pound dogs.. when I say the breed standard is 5-7 pounds, they look at me like I'm nuts.

I know I am so tired of that too. Chachi is 10 lbs too and he doesnt look huge he looks small. He is more longer if anything than my Jewels who is 6 lbs.

I have 3 beautifull yorkies,but as most of you well know when, I bought my 2nd one I did not know much about them other then I love them. I was told he would not get any bigger than 7 pds for less money I could buy this silky they said that will get 10 pds. Well I wanted one like my Benji which is 5.5 to 6 pds. I wanted a yorkie. He was cute I bought him to find out they knew he would be at least 10 pds. They admitted it later but i already have him .For those who dont know I was mad they lied to me to sell him. I wanted a little one as I learned more. I bought my 3 rd one now and he is same age as tyke but only 2.6 pds tyke is now 5 months and 10.5 pds. Guess what I love them all. Tyke will fetch,play. do all kinds of tricks which the other 2 wont. Zip is always my worry becauses he so small. I worry when people come over and want to pick him up, that they will step on him etc. Matter of fact my daughter came over and did drop him. He jumped out of her arms when he saw me. not hurt thank God. I did tell alot here how bummed I was but I now love them so much and would not trade any of them for anything. I am grateful for those who stuck with me and helped me through this. Some really knew how I felt but also knew give her time to adjust to this and she will love them. Thank you for being there for my stupid thinking.I have 3 different sizes and its great.For anyone that is disapointed I understand why but, you will love them anyways and you can always do what I did buy another.Hope this has helped someone here.

I know, right! LOL But, we as humans could lose 20-30lbs and still be healthy. If a Yorkie loses 2-3 it could be a matter of life or death. And! I should have listened to you, because I got REAL off track with eating well, and I feel like a fat pig. :( But that's another post! ;)

When I get my next one i will be like you. I will have one at the small end of the standard one that is in the standard and one that is over the standard.

My puppy is 5.5 lbs and I've had people say to me: "is he a big yorkie?" Like he is not to standard. The only reason I care about weight is because I take him everywhere and have a bad neck. 12lbs would be a lot to carry for me but if it were to happen...oh well...I'd find a way to deal with it because I'm not going to starve him or trade him in. No way!

Obsessing about a Yorkies weight is ridiculous in my opinion. It's as dumb as our yorkies saying "Gee I hope mommy doesn't grow over 150 pounds.";) I mean really, who cares? They love us unconditionally no matter what we look like so we should do the same for them. I could care less if Nikko (who is 5 1/2 pounds) grew to 10 pounds tomorrow. He is a sweet and healthy little boy. Isn't that the most important thing?

Hobbs is not even 3 lbs and he has never had a hypoglocemic episode and he is perfectly healthy. He has never gotten stepped on or rolled over on, even though he has slept with us every single night since we brought him home. My sister has a yorkie that is 6 lbs, my parents have one that is 12 lbs, and my grandmother has one that is 15 lbs, so obviously I like yorkies of all shapes and sizes. But I am not ashamed to admit that when I was looking for a yorkie of my own, I wanted a yorkie that would stay small, preferably around or under 5 pounds. I think that the reason most people ask about weight is because they pay a TON of money for a puppy that the breeder says will be a certain size (yes, I know you cannot exactly predict the weight of a puppy, but A LOT of breeders do for the same reason they call them "teacup"), and when that yorkie begins to exceed that promised size they get a little frustrated, but this doesn't mean that they love their doggie any less. I think they are just frustrated with the breeder. I think a lot of first-time yorkie owners think that yorkies will be under 10 lbs, some people probably think they will stay under 5 lbs. That is why they come to yorkietalk, to ask these questions. I can assure you that I have asked A LOT of stupid questions here, even after reading books and online articles about yorkies and still not finding the answer. Because people think that yorkies will stay small is probably the reason that a majority of the people in this world buy yorkies. So, can you blame them for worrying about their weight?? When people come to YorkieTalk, I don't want them to feel nervous or ashamed about making a post about weight...that is what this forum is for....for people to come and not be ashamed to ask anything and everything they have concerns about...even if us veteran yorkie owners think that it is trivial.

I TOTALLY Agree - I don't mind someone talking about the weight of a yorkie - but when they FREAK OUT that their yorkie is bigger than what they had in mind - that bothers me.

When I wanted a yorkie - I had no weight specifics - and I Am way more intrigued with personality rather than weight - I'm a happy yorkie mom - I am blessed with 2 little girls full of personality.

I LOVE my girls no matter what size .....and it has never once bothered me that they aren't itty bitty.:thumbup:

GOOD POST and way to go speaking up...it's too bad our whole society is OBSESSED with weight - both in our own selves and now in our dogs.

It's actually sad that a yorkies WEIGHT is more important than HEALTH.

I absolutely agree however, when you have people asking if there is anything they can give their dog to stop him from growing (an actual thread on here, can't remember the poster) you can't blame people for getting upset. This person actually wanted something to prevent her dog from growing. It was insane!!

I agree with RLC12345678. People worry about the weight because they paid extra (and a TON) for the smaller yorkie. I know I paid more for Millie than her siblings because I wanted a smaller yorkie. I was told she would be around 3 -4 lbs and she is 5.2lbs. And yes that is still a small yorkie and I am happy with her sweet little personality and her great bladder control (more important to me now than her size) and I am happy with her size. But I sure would not have been thrilled if she had gotten up to 8 -10 lbs when I paid extra for a smaller one! That's what would have gotten to me. Not her size per se, but the money I paid to make sure to get a smaller sized yorkie. So I did worry for the 1st 6 months, but I did get over it!

I'm not sure but I think most people, and mostly those who have never had a Yorkie, but did do a little research, are just looking for those Yorkies within the breed standard. It's what they pictured a Yorkie should be. Maybe they should do away with the standard so people wouldn't get so upset. I think the same thing about being mislead. It's like seeing something in a catalog or online, ordering it, and then not being what you expected, especially if you spent alot of money. I personally think all Yorkies big or small are beautiful and should be loved unconditionally.

I have to admit when I first got Parker I ask the question about how big he will get when his parents of 3.5lbs and 4lbs. I ask this question not because I wanted him to stay a certain size, but just because he was my first yorkie and I didnt know much about that stuff. I could care less if he weights 15lbs when he is grown, if he is healthy. I think alot of new owners are like me and are just trying to find out every bit of information about their new baby as they can. I will agree with you I did see the thread about someone asking how they can get there yorkie to be smaller etc. I thought to myself when I read that, that they must be crazy. I was a little mad about that one. But I only ask about the weight issue out of curiousity and wanting information. I dont think we should bash someone for asking that question. Its not always meant the way you might think it is. I think some people ask the question because they are told certain things from the breeder and just want our advise. I dont feel like I was being obsessed with Parkers weight when I ask that question, I was just being a concerned parent gathering information. I would love my baby no matter what he weighed

Neighbor has a 3.5 pound male, tiny.. so we're outside stranger walks by eww and ahhing about the little one not paying attention to Bailey..:( Then she says.. " that's the kind of Yorkie I want." I wanted to say,, "Yeah, and the $125.00 a month she pays for medication for him too?"
But I didn't...

Excellent post. I agree it upsets me when I see posts where owners are asking how I can keep my Yorkie from getting any bigger. Dear God what are they thinking. It's people like that so many dogs are in shelters.

I just wish more people would actually ask themselves why they want a Yorkie (or any dog for that matter) and do their research BEFORE buying one.
