I think a lot of people think this, because Huddersfield Ben, known as the 'father of the Yorkie' in a way was between 9-12lbs himself. He was a larger dog who produced smaller pups. And a lot of the terriers that were used to create the Yorkshire were also bigger terriers. In the early days of the breed, "almost anything in the shape of a Terrier having a long coat with blue on the body and fawn or silver coloured head and legs, with tail docked and ears trimmed, was received and admired as a Yorkshire terrier" (P. H. Coombs in The American Book of the Dog, pg 443). So, it seems before there was a proper standard put forth, Yorkies were considered lots of different things and there probably were some terriers in the 20lb range called Yorkies back then.

I want to make sure that although I am disagreeing about the early weight of the Yorkshire Terrier, I am in no way downing ANY yorkie of any weight. They are all lovable to me and you know I think Jackson is one of Yorkietalk's STARS! I love him! He is a beautiful dog and full of personality!

Yorkies were always meant to be tiny dogs. Just as there are yorkies over standard now, I am sure there were some back then too, but I wanted to dispell the myth that they were supposed to have been 30 pound dogs -- not so. The statement I was in disagreement with was where the poster said "original yorkies were around 30 pounds or so." If she had said there were some dogs called yorkies in the 20 pound range, I would not have held exception, but to intimate that the standard was anything like 30 pounds is incorrect.

Where did you find Huddersfield Ben's weight? I have looked over the years. I found where his daughter won 1st place and his son won 3rd place in the 5 pound and under category in 1867. I saw that his grandson Ted weighted 4.5 pounds. Ben won in 1869, 1870, and 1871... the YT History also includes this excerpt "At the Crystal Palace show in 1871 held in London, Mrs. Jonas (Mary) Foster (who was acknowledged as having brought the breed to its prominence, as well as being the first woman to judge dogs in England) showed in two classes. In Broken Haired Scotch or Yorkshire Terrier, her Huddersfield Ben (KC no. 3612) was second being beaten
by his son, Mrs. Foster’s Bruce (KC no. 3595).
Third place was won by her Emperor (KC no. 3609) also Ben’s son. She also showed dogs in Toy Terrier Broken Haired under 5 lbs. winning 1st with her Little Kate (KC no. 4001), later owned by Lady Giffard. Kate was also a daughter of Huddersfield Ben. Third in the class was Ben’s son, Foster’s Sandy (KC no. 4016). In 1873 Mrs. Foster won a 3rd place in Broken Haired Scotch and won all 3 placings with her dogs in the Broken Haired Toy Terrier under 5 lbs." -- still no firm mention of Ben's weight, although it seems to put him more in the lower weight category. I think some have seen the painting of him and his daughter Katie and thought since he was larger, then he must be over 5 pounds, but we don't know how old she was or her exact weight either, and of course it is just a painting, not a photo. Here is another site about weight of the Yorkshire Terriers: Weight History Of the Yorkshire Terrier confirming the smaller weight categories of early yorkshire terriers as well as the broken scotch that were forefathers.

Oh, yeah, I know you're not knocking the teapots! :p

According to Huddersfield Ben's wikipedia page Huddersfield Ben - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia he often produced smaller puppies, but he himself weighed 9-12lbs. It was referenced to a website, but it's not loading properly on my computer.

Here's a few links talking about the 30lb Yorkies:

Yorkies weren't always the tiny creatures we all have grown to love. Yorkshire Terriers originated from Yorkshire, England where they typically weighed at the least 12 pounds, and regularly 20 to 30 pounds.

I know about a yorkie that is about 20-24 lbs :D she's here in iceland, she's FAT !
Fido is about 16 lbs.

shodanusmc 01-23-2011 07:09 AM

We have a Yorkie that weighs 140 pounds. He answers to Carlo, and he wants to bad to be a lap dog, but just to heavy.

markm1ller 01-23-2011 09:54 AM

giant yorkie

thank you for your reply's but at 28 pounds she is still heavier but she is not fat she is quite solid.
to the person who typed that they have a 140 pound yorkie i cannot take that serious.

OwnedByJezebel 01-23-2011 10:28 AM

And I thought my Yorkzillas of 12 and 14.3 lbs were big! I have to explain to people all the time that Yorkies can be bigger. Both have flopped ears, which adds to the confusion.

And, on top of that, the one I got in October (rehomed) is Parti colored. So, you take a 14.3 lb dog with flopped ears that is parti colored and try to explain that he is an AKC registered, full blooded Yorkie, and people look at you like you've got 7 eyeballs. I've about given up on telling the truth, and am considering just saying he's a "terrier mix" when asked what he is. However, when I took him to the vet last week for a check-up, the groomer took one look at him and got so excited -- she recognized immediately what he was.

@markm1ller: I want to see pics of your Yorkzilla! And yes, shodanusmc was teasing and not being serious about a 140lb Yorkie, that's a Cane Corso.

Teegy 01-23-2011 10:47 AM

My friend Ashley has a 15 pound Yorkie, Murphy, he is absolutely gorgeous and very good natured. Hey my baby brother is 8 inches taller than me and has a beard. Genetics have ways of working beyond our control, doesn't make him or I any less a McLean, hahahaha

I believe this was a joke about their second dog if you look at their avatar

Goldielocks19 01-23-2011 10:51 AM

I have a 12lb yorkie. A lot of people ask me too what is he.
My big yorkie is the most well behaved out of all of them.
He's just too adorable, I want to steal him!

Can't takem e seriously/ Why that is almost like saying that you still believe the USA is a colony of Great Britan!

I should have said that he believes he is a Yorkie. I can tell you first hand he wishes he was....they he would have a ton of cloths, a spot on the couch, and get carried around!

Dm740 04-02-2011 03:32 PM

My purebred yorkie is 24 pounds and she is only 3. You wouldn't believe the size of my dog, she isnt fat fat but she is plump! I am curious what the world's largest is?

I just wish he had his full tail! Right now he just has a nub that I have named "Stubby McWigglesworth". (Yes, I have named most of his parts)

First off...Your "little" boy is just adorable! My Gizzy was almost 9 lbs. at his heaviest but stayed about 7.5 for the most part.

Secondly...it is such a guy thing to name parts...:biggrin8: ... however gotta love the tail name!

:p I love giving them raspberries!! Especially when they are little pups! They get this look on their face like they are (yes) giggling! It is Fantastic!

hes adorable!!!!!!

Perfect Size!

It is refreshing to read about the larger Yorkie. Our 2yr old is AKC and 16lbs. She was the odd ball in the liter, thank goodness! We have the best of both worlds, an 8lb 11 yr old Yorkie and a 2 yr old, hefty!

I am asked wherever I go with both Yorkies, what breed is the large one? ha A while back I read where one YT member said she tells folks her larger Yorkie is a Clydesdale Yorkie... I have borrowed that many times and it works!

The more to love...

I go through the same thing with my Mia. She's almost 2 and weighs 16 pounds. We love every ounce on that little chubby body. I have to continually tell people that Yorkies come in bigger sizes too. Kobe, on the other hand, weighs 10 pounds.

together4ever 05-23-2011 01:25 PM

Molly is 8# 7oz, and I'm glad. She has floppy ears too.

Your "little guy" is sooo.......... cute!!!:Puppy2:

Yorkie_mommy 05-23-2011 03:08 PM

My baby is 12 weeks and weighs 7lbs already so I know he is going to be a big boy. And everyone thinks that he is the cutest thing ever.

Kudos to the TEAPOT YORKIES!!!!!

JonlyCajunQueen 05-23-2011 08:31 PM

I have read back in the day yorkshire terriers were medium size dogs...not so small. WE love them all~~~

Mutant Yorkie. World's largest yorkie?

I just adopted a 2.5 year old Yorkie who weighs 18+ lbs. Not a record but love this sturdy little guy.

I am right there with you when it comes to my Romeo. He's 15 1/2 lbs and I always get the usual "is he purebred?". Romeo too is AKC registered. Like other parents with "large" Yorkies I am beginning to believe that large is normal.

R_Z 03-08-2012 05:47 PM

He is awesome. Looks like a happy little boy. Great name.

mutant Mickey..

:animal-paI also have a big boy..Mickey is 8 months old and is 14lbs and does have beautiful floppy ears. He came from a well know Yorkie breeder but many who see his size insist he can't be a Yorkie..he sure is!! I just love his size but he is just so full of energy I have to take time out to have a little rest. He looks so much like Chewy it is unreal. Yorkies are precious whether tiny babies or big boys like my Mickey
