How do you get a husband to like a yorkie? Annabelle comes home in 9 days, and I am nervous! It took a lot of conjoling, begging and some other stuff;) , to get Mike to agree to me getting an inside dog. Background: Mike is a neat freak, obsessive compulisive almost, and likes only outdoor animals, but agreed to let me have a yorkie because I really wanted one. Anyway, I am nervous he is going to regret letting me have a yorkie. I told him I will never give her up, if he kicks her out, I am going too!!!! So, do you have suggestions on how to make it a smooth transition?? He is most concerned about potty accidents (I bought pish pads and diapers already), and whining at night. :xfingers: |
Well, really it will take no work on your part. Annabelle will win him over for you. Seriously. My husband isn't like yours, but could've cared less if we did or didn't have a dog.....he cares now though. :) They just have a way of wiggling into your heart. |
My step-dad is just like your husband... It took my mom and I 3 years to talk him into letting us get an inside dog. Make sure you are constant about taking the pup out every 30 min. to an hour for the first couple months to get them potty trained. Other wise he will probly fall in love with your new pup...... My step-dad now would do anything for their yorkie. He even lets Rocky wake him up in the middle of the night so he can get a belly rub.... They act tuff but they fall hard when it comes to havnig that little pup on their lap Crystal |
As far as the whining at night, I'll tell you what I did. I put a nice soft blankey in the crate with Taz, along with a stuffed animal and a clock that ticks wrapped in an old sock. The ticking reminds them of their litter mates, along with the softness of the animal. Something else, since you won't be getting her for a couple more days, can you bring a blanket or toy over the the breeders house and have it put with the mom and babies? The scent should be soothing for her when you bring her home. Just warn hubby there will be accidents, but it won't be the end of the world. Pretty soon, he'll be cleaning up after her.:D |
It will just be a matter of time before he falls in love with the new pup. Yorkies have such amazing little personalities and he won't be able to resist loving her. I too am a neat freak - Yorkies are great with not shedding so that's a huge bonus. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised. ;) |
You know I think it just takes time. My hubby is a bit country lived in the country on around 100 acres and was very ify on the idea of a small dog. Dogs were supposed to be large. Well when we went to get Reagan I got down on the floor and was playing with the two pups and the adults. He kinda did. On the way home however she crawled over in his lap. He was driving and I figured I'd hold her but no she wasn't having that she wanted to sit with him. I'll admit it I was a bit jealous but as jealous as I was happy too because I knew he started liking her then. Maybe she knew she needed to get in good with him. However it really just took a little time for him to get used to the idea. Now he says we will only have small indoor dogs. We have large outdoor dogs and they are just so much more work. I however say we will have both large and small. The accidents drove mine crazy to but he did realize that there wasn't much he could do. Plus we had gotten his bloodhound the year before so I and my mother who was living with us at the time had to housetrain her. There wasn't too much he could say after that. Hey you never know you may housetrain your's the fastest because you're going to be so worried about upsetting him so you'll be watching that pup like a hawk. There's always a plus to everything. You both just have to be reasonable of course and you know that. The pup will have accidents but really a lot of them are actually your fault, or at least that was the case here. Honestly I think he'll fall in love too, just read about how many other hubbies are snugglin with the pups. Good Luck. |
1 Attachment(s) Y'all are making me feel better! Here is a picture of Mike (he use to be a state trooper, so y'all can kinda figure out how his personality is) |
You wont have to do a thing! My hubby was dead against getting a yorkie and now he thinks shes the bees knees:D and even tells all his friends they should get one |

Now my husband loves her, he will not openly admitt it, cause he is a guy and a guy can not admitt he likes a sissy dog LOL But he will let her love all over him and he holds her and fuzzes with her and she just adores him as well! My suggestion for you is to make sure you keep your yorkie clean and brushed and make sure you are consistent on the potty training, that way she don't have an accident in the house, if he is a neat freak, he definitely will not want her pee'ing all over the place, so with a lot of hard work you should be able to get her trained quickly, if you do work, I suggest crate training her, do not give her run of the house, keep her safe, and a crate will help protect her. I'm sure your hubby will come around and who knows, he may even want another one! I know my hubby has agreed to me getting 1 more! Good luck to you and keep us posted! |

But, when I moved in, I brought along my Himalayan cat, and at first he was not too happy, and now he always says how much he likes "the little turd"! |
I am very much like your husband I am a clean freak!!! I am actually border line complulsive with it, I clean everyday no matter what. My hubby likes everything clean as well. The only diffrence is I NEVER believe in having an outdoor animal unless its a farm animal. We had a yorkie before for two years and he never potty trained, I got prego with our first child and me and hubby decided it was time to rehome him. We have a brand new house we just built and its only 6 mths old, we decided to try another yorkie and we got hannah around 5 mths ago, we were both very worried about accidents, but we playpen trained her I guess thats kinda like crate training. And we got VERY lucky our girl seemed to instanlty know what to do and not to do. She never whined unless she had to potty and she never pottied in her play pen or the house, hopefully you will get lucky too. It will be hard alot of pups whine and bark for a while, they can be compared to a newborn baby they will wake you up to potty a few times in the middle of the night at first, and they will have accidents the truth is some small dogs NEVER potty train, that is something anyone should think about before getting a small dog its a big responsibility and we failed at that the first time a round. I hope all works out! Good luck! |
I convinced Jim I needed a small dog to plug the hole in my heart. My dtr had just got married (though they live with us) and I was lonely. He said as long it was a small dog I could carry around ( I have health problems so I can not carry heavy things). We had decided on a small poodle (Don't throw things  ). We went to a flea market and there was a guy with 2 full grown yorkies. He looked at them and told me to ask the guy a lot of q's. He kept sending us back to ask the guy who was a breeder more q's then said if I liked them I could get a yorkie. Now he picks her up and cuddles her calls her his little girl. Though he will deny it. He is also a country boy who believes dogs should be outside. But we are ordering a new mobile home and he insists tile for all but the bedroom in case of pee accidents. Give it time, they know what to do. |
oh congradulations on your yourkie. My husband is a big dog person too but he fell in love with Oscar he says you just can't help but like him with that cute little face. and it helps too that yorkies are soo playful (Oscar borders on vicious when he gets too excited). Just don't push them to make friends, and don't worry if he doesnt' want to act like he likes it (especally when his friends are around) but I bet even if he says he doesn't like the yorkie you'll still catch them all snuggled up somewhere after a couple weeks. |
are our husbands related somehow???? this is too funny....all our Hubby's are sounding related in one way or another! Mario is also very set in his ways.......likes outdoor, big dogs, a neat freak, likes everything orderly, has never liked yappy dogs, I also accuse him of some ocd traits..(he denies lol) and he did not want a small dog.....dead set against it NOPE NOPE NOPE.. but...bought her for me because he loves me!! Abbey came to us first......and in a matter of a day this 6'2" man was protecting this little 1 lber of a puppy.......she is now HIS BABY!!! Beamer came to us a year later and he was excited about us adopting another baby, he emailed annoucements of the new addition! He has even given my mother advice on how to walk Abbey & Beamer to keep them safe..ARRRGHH.....she puppy sits for us !!!:D This is so not like him........this independent business man's blood pressures are now within normal range and we credit the furbabies. He will tell anyone that listens that his stress melts away as soon as he walks through the door to our circle turning, jumping up & just so damn happy to see you YORKIES!! So do not worry...Annabelle will own his heart as well! :aimeeyork |
1 Attachment(s) I had just lost my loving dog/best friend of 8 years and hubby knew I was brokenhearted. I have MS and am home alone all day...I know hubby was afraid that I'd 'give up' and that I needed something to keep me going, so he insisted that I get whatever kind of dog I wanted. I know he wasn't keen on a little dog..not at all....but, like I said, he'd do anything at that time to put a smile on my face. We got Topher and he IMMEDIATELY fell in love with the little guy. After a few weeks I even brought up the topic of getting another one and he didn't disagree! I couldn't believe it! (He's the one talking about it more and more now!) Make sure you give hubby and the pup time alone together for that bond to happen. I'm finding now that Topher is becoming more and more hubby's dog as hubby is the one who walks him every evening. (oh...one little side note...if hubby is a neat freak, make sure you keep the bathroom door closed and put all magazines and paper items out of reach as I've learned that these little guys have an affinity to paper products of just about any kind! ) This picture was taken after Topher quietly snuck into the bathroom and 'attacked' an evil roll of toilet tissue! Thank heavens he was there to protect us! lol Good luck with your new baby |
Let me speak from a husband's point of view. My wife and I got our yorkie almost a year ago and I still have have resentment about it. Even though I have grown to like the dog and have trained her to act like she's supposed to act, if my wife came home today and said she wanted to give her away I would jump at the chance. I think here lies the problem with these situations. Women think the "cuteness" of the dog will win over every man and he will forget that he never wanted the dog in the first place. Well I can tell you from experience that sour taste in your mouth never goes away. |
Purchase some belly bands for him to wear at night. They work great and prevent accidents when you are not watching. Just make sure you wash him off when changing the pads and don't leave them on all day. You can purchase them from most any yorkie rescue group. Of course, since I am on the board, I am partial to the Yorkshire Terrier Rescue Network (www.yorkshireterrierrescue.net). |
My fiancee was not pleased with the idea of getting a small dog, he loves big dogs. But we agreed that if I got my little dog, that we could get a second dog of his choice when we moved into a house. Well we have moved into the new house and he has been asking me when can we get another yorkie. I was kind of blown away because he has always talked about getting a another lab. Plus all of his friends who thing they are big tough guys become be softies around Rocky. I wound not worry to much it. If you husband loves you he will do anything just to make you happy. |
My husband too is a country boy that beleive ALL dogs should be kept outside. Well I got my first yorkie..he didn't want her..got my second..he didn't want her either..to this day he still doesnt and stil doesn't mess with them..Then I got my 3rd..Dante..He didn't want anything to do with him either..but wo and behold..Dante wanted lots to do with him..and now my husband calls him HIS dog..is constantly have me look at what HIS dog is doing..LOL..and if I get on to HIS dog he gets on to ME lol..he loves him..and i'm still in shock of this. This is the same man that has complained about my animals since I got with him..So given the right yorkie comes along that fits him..I'd say he will be won over..Now don't get me wrong..all of the other animals..he still complains about..but one lil boy wormed his way into his heart. So it is possible. So i'd say it could go either way. My suggestion is to just do what you can to give your hubby as little as possible to complain about him so it doesn't become a constant fight. And hopefully this pup falls head over heals for your hubby..Good Luck..If he's anything like my hubby you'll need it lol.. |

Is Katia a Russian name?? |
Don't worry ur new Yorkie will soon take over everything, even ur husband. Theres just something about these little guys that we have no control over. So if I was u I wouldn't give it to much thought. My husband is ready for our second Yorkie now when he didn't even want the first. He's the one that is already looking for the other one.... |
My boyfriend and I had a slight falling out in the beginning of our relationship because of my yorkie bear. I guess I had gone a little overboard in talking about her and wanting to take her on our first dat.e...but that's beside the point. Anyway he proceeded to tell me how he is really obsessed with cleanliness and sanitation and he's not an animal person. He had a german shepard before and she died and after that he never wanted another dog. That she was an outside dog, and that he wasn't that fond of her either..blah blah. So we stopped seeing each other for like over a month. Then we got back together and this time he actually MET Coco and said "Now I know why you want her to go with you everywhere, she's adorable." Yes there are times when he gets annoyed, like when she farts on him or licks his lips..lol..but he loves her. He even got her a Valentines day card where he wrote "you won me over and now I love you". The talks of a second one have happened but we're waiting. Of course he is still very clean freakish and I always keep an eye out for her poop or pee so I can pick it up and wipe her up immediately, but he loves his little girl. He will never admit this to anyone but he actually makes airplane noises and flies her around the room..lol...Once we got into an argument about her sleeping with us. So I agreed to compromise and try it out. So I set up her bed on the ground below us...guess what happened??? Yea at 2 am he brought her into the bed because he couldn't sleep, mind you she wasn't making a single sound...yea he loves her. They do end of loving them, just not the same way as we do. It always helps to make sure you are training the pup the right way so he isn't always annoyed by her bad behaviors. |

How funny! Your Mom said the same thing about YOU! LOL |
it took me all of 15 seconds to fall in love w/milo when my wife brought him home. we had a german shepard for 14 years until he passed , i never thought i would like a small dog ,, i could not be happier!!!!!!! just give him some time.. |

We have had our yorkie for almost 4 months now, and I am sorry to admit this.....But, my hubby feels the same way you feel.( The only difference is...he won't even help train, pick up after her,or really have ANYTHING to do with her.) If she jumps in his lap, he will put her back on the floor, if she paws at his leg for attention, he will ignore her. He just really does not care for any types of dogs. He didnt mind that I got her, but it was strictly in the understanding that she was to be MY dog only, and I would take all responsibility for her, such as housebreaking training ect.....He wanted NOTHING to do with it. But,I will have to say that she gets enough attention from me and my children, that she doesent need his, lol, and I take her with us just about everywhere we go. She IS spoiled by me, and I will never part with her. Dont get me wrong I love my hubby, but most of the time I like my yorkie better! lol ;) |
when i met my partner he told me he didnt like yorkies but within half an hour he was cuddleing sasha and calling himself daddy to tye and zac:D he was the one who said he wanted another yorkie when sasha died so we got brandi and then when i saw a ad about a lady who needed to rehome her yorkie all i had to do was show him her pic and he said phone the women with a big smile on his face and thats how we got annie:D now we are moving to a house in august he has already said he wants another one, gawd knows how many we will end up with:D your hubby will love the yorkie:) |

Animals have always been a big part of my life. My parents would'nt let us have dogs. So we had birds, hamsters, rabbits, fish, mice etc. When I turned 17 my father went through one of many mid life crisis. He wanted a dog. My brother and dad picked out a pup that was half lab half chow. I was upset and cried about his "poor sister stuck at the pound all by herself." Me being daddy's little girl payed off and I got my little girl the next day. My mom immediately fell in love with the pups and so did the rest of my family. Anyway, this has made me realize that I can never be with a man who does not love dogs as much as I do. Luckily I met a man who not only bought me my Lola, but also calls her his daughter.:) My cousin has had two dogs that her husband has taken to the pound. She feels the same way about dogs as I do. She now has to accept the fact that she cannot have a dog as long as they are married because he cannot handle certain dog behaviors like digging. She told me that she cries over this and is so sad that those two dogs are gone. Anyway, before purchasing a pet, I would make sure that your husband is 100% supportive. I would not want him to resent the fact that you now have this little creature in your life. Sorry this post was so long.:) |
This is a really funny thread. Prior to getting Katy my husband and I had a deal. Who ever broke down first had poopy duty. Thsi worked for a long time. It had been over 5 years since our last dog passed away. He was gone helping restore the electric in Louisanna for about 8 weeks. While he was gone I got Katy. He said fine remember our deal. Shes your dog not mine. OK, can I tell you that she has completely won him over. If Daddy is home I don't exist. It is all about him. Sometimes they stay up until 2:00 in the morning playing ball. Oh yeah and the poopy duty stuff, he helps with. |
