we took Starsky home at about 9 weeks. He did great, never had a problem! Plus I work full time and my daughter was in school. I just came home for lunch everyday and let him out and fed him, then my daughter was home after school until I got home at 5:30pm. He was crated while we weren't home, once he was potty trained he was able to stay out of the crate and was limited where he could run. He was such a easy dog to potty train. I hope my next one is too. |
Gus came home with me when he was 10 weeks and 3 days old. He did just fine. Good breeders will not let a puppy go till they feel they are ready. It took him a few days to adjust but after that he was health, happy and running around and playing. |
We brought a 5 week old pup home with us from Florida last year. The breeder let us take her because we were having pups the end of that week which is why we had to re-arrange our travel schedule. Feebie didn't take to our yorkies for a long time. I could really see the difference in her development versus those we raise from birth. I would never do that again. Feebie finally fit in and now is getting ready for her first litter in two weeks. I keep the smaller yorkies until 12-16 weeks old, the bigger ones 10-12 weeks, but if one of our pups is going to a home who already has yorkies, sometimes I will let them go 8-10 weeks, depending on the pup. It's during the 8-14 week period that you can observe the mother teaching them skills they will need to protect themselves as adults. Besides that, I want to keep them with me as long as I can. It has nothing to do with how ready they are, I'm not ready to let them go! |
muffy was 8 weeks and kirby was 10 weeks and there was no problems |
The lab stayed with my parents when I moved, but I miss her dearly. But the lab gets to have a pool and a huge backyard which is better for her. My Yorkie's name is going to be Cali, after California, where I grew up. |

Oh Auburn fans huh? Well I guess its ok. No I'm kidding I wasn't actually raised in Bama so I'm not die hard one way or the other. I do prefer Alabama to win though but when they aren't playing against each other I'm glad to see Auburn win too. With your husband being that way you won't have to worry at all. My lab is always right beside me and follows me every where because I'm the one who has always worked with him and such. He listens to my husband and is very well behaved but you can tell whose dog he is. Yeah Reagan, our yorkie, she will let the big dogs know when enough is enough. She will definately stand her ground. |
I really think it all depends,my mommy yorkie teaches the little ones alot in the time togeather from 8-12 weeks, her puppies know not to bite, they potty on the potty pads, and she teaches them manners that no human can teach, mine are much better offstaying with mom till 12 weeks, yet depending on where they are going, and how they are doing, then each case can be differant.yet if I were to purchase another one, I would not get it before 12 weeks:aimeeyork that way I now everything is how it appears, plus by then health is looking like it will be |
I got my wee girl at just over 8 weeks and had a lot of problems feeding her. I think she would have been better staying with mum for another 2 weeks or so,until her independent feeding was better established. She is very small-was only .90kg when we got her,so maybe that was a factor. Otherwise, she has been lovely! |
I got mine at 8 weeks......BUT - he was a big little pup (weighs 8 1/2 pounds now) and was eating like a little trooper. I took him home and never had any problems whatsoever. I think "size" and "how well a little puppy is eating on its own" are very important factors to take into consideration. All my little 8-week old did when I took him home was "eat," "play," and "sleep" constantly. He has always been extremely healthy. I wouldn't want to take a tiny little pup home that had only recently been weaned. They certainly can have a lot of problems that can be avoided if they stay with their mother a couple more weeks. Good luck - Carol Jean |
Jersey came home at 6 or 7 weeks and we've never had a problem. |
I took Chachi home at 6 weeks and Jewels at 8 weeks. |
I got Illy when she was 8 weeks and everything was fine. She was a good eater from day one, so there was no nutritional issues. |
I always thought that you had to wait atleast untill 8 weeks, but I have learned that you can get them as early as 6 weeks. My best friend that just joined Yt got hers the other day and she is 6 weeks and is doing great...So I guess it all depends on the breeder...Can't wait to see ur new baby.. |
