Cages when no one is home. Yes or No? Just curious, do many of you cage your Yorkies if no one is home? Night time is different I think because we cage Maddie during the day if we are at work, but she just started sleeping with us at night. She is my first Yorkie so I read many many books when I got her and almost all of them said that if you are going to leave your Yorkie by itself or themselves, they are better off and safer in a cage. How does everyone feel about this? |
Parker is 4month old and we cage him during the day when we are at work. He is safer that way and so is my house and carpets. He too sleeps with us at night. I think if you dont cage them during the day when they are little then you will probably never get them house broken. |
It depends on how long you are going to leave them alone. If you are only going to be gone a few hours, then it's ok to cage them. But in my case, hubby and I are gone for 8 hours a day and I think that is way too long to leave Nikko cooped up in his cage. We lock him in the kitchen with food, water, toys, a bed and wee wee pad. I know he pretty much sleeps most of the day anyway, but if he needs to stretch his little legs, he can do so. |

I crate ("cage") my boys duriung the day, but I am able to make it home at lunch to let them out. Yesterday I had to leave for the day and they were cooped up for 8 hours...I've only done that twice since I've had them and I usually have someone else come and let them out at least for a potty break. I plan on crating mine until they are completely house trained (potty, chewing, digging, etc) which will probably take a while. Once they are trained they will have free run of the house. Rocky is crated while we are not home. It gives the cat a break and it has saved my carpets and walls too. |
Caging Well at first if we were going to be out I used to put Lex in his xpen. Until he learned to go pee on his pad for sure and also to stop him from biting the kitchen table. After maybe two or three weeks when he learned what behaviour was not acceptable we stopped closing the xpen. We would leave the door open so he could go in and relax when he wanted. If we closed it...he acted like it was the end of the world and would go bonkers. Now we have had him a total of two months and the xpen is put away. He doesn't get caged at all. Usually someone is home most of the day so he is never really alone until we go out on the weekend with the kids. If you think he can get hurt or into too much mischief while you are out then I would suggest getting an xpen so he can play safely and still be able to be confined until he is fully or at a better stage in his house breaking. |
both of the Boys are in there kennels when we are not home. Not more than 4 hrs at a time. We get up at 5 - 5:30 am they eat roam around. In there kennel around 7am. My daughter lets them out before she goes to school around 8am. I come home for lunch around 11 am they are out till noon...then I get home at 3pm. they are out of thier kennels for the rest of the afternoon. Then around 8:30pm they are ready for bed and they sleep in a kennel together. I usually let them out again at 10:00pm, then I go to sleep. I am a very light sleeper and very grumpy when I get woken up so I think it is better for everyone that the boys have thier own sleeping area. |
Mine are confined to either the kitchen or the laundry area, but not caged in a crate. |

Tatum is crated during the day when no one is home. That's usually for a stretch of 4-5 hours at a time. She sleeps with us at night. I really think she's comfortable and feels safe in the crate. I used to feel that crating dogs was a bit cruel until my sister showed me how well behaved her three (one being a Great Dane) were after crate training them. All she did was say "kennel up" and all three ran straight to their bedroom that had all their crates and loaded up and waited for their treat. (Of course the Great Dane's "crate" was a really large wire cage!) I just feel much more comfortable knowing that there have been no accidents or worse, catastrophies where she gets hurt while we're away. |
I crate Baby in a HUGE cage for like a 100lb dog because I hate the ones for her size. They are too small. :) So, I leave at 8:00am, come home at 11:30-12:30/1:00 to let her out. Then I come home at 3:30. She only peed in the big crate once and that was my fault. I couldn't come home to let her out. :( I thought maybe she could hold it, but I was wrong. I used to keep her in an Xpen while I was at work, but she climbs out of that now, so I had to resort to other measures. :animal36 |
We crate Oscar when we have to leave home and he can\'t go with us. But it is never more than 3 or 4 hours. But he likes his crate and voluntarily goes in his crate to sleep when we are home. It is just a safer place for him when he can\'t go with us when we leave home. |
Kobe is crated during the day when no one is at home also. But his crate is also huge. Made for a large dog. He has room for his bed, food, toys, & a pee pad. |
I didn\'t crate mine and it was a HUGE mistake. Housebreaking took forever and i still wouldn\'t call them totally broke cause they still have accidents. I would crate if i were you..BUT i wouldn\'t for long periods of time like the others said.. |
