Where do you go???? I'm sorry if this has been discussed before. I would love to take Jasmine with me everywhere I go, but I'm afraid I'm going to get yelled at by the manager. Can you take them into stores and such? I have heard of people doing this, but I never really see anyone with puppies in stores. Is it just the area that I live in? I live in the Hershey, Pa area. Where do you guys take your babies??? :icon5: |
Once they get used to hiding in a purse carrier, you can take them anywhere! Before 9/11 we used to sneak Gracie on airplanes!!!! |
Toby doesnt get to go anywhere :( this is one of the disadvantages of having a larger yorkie (toby is around 9lbs) . . . BUT, when he was little i took him to college finals with mes and the movies (i can still take him to the movies because my fiance is a manager there :p) , i got kicked out of wal mart several times, and starbucks had a hissyfit when i whent in with my fiance to order my coffee (because my fiance cant order it correctly) this time i got really angry because i litteraly only came in for a second just to order when he got to the register, let see...... where else....... the mall is a big nono.... i know seattle is more pet friendly but deffinatly not my area, the on ly way you can get away with taking youre dog everywhere is if youa re famous |
I am sooo scared to get yelled at too!!! Esme has been to: Blockbuster, Dunkin Donuts, Circuit City, Einstein Bagels, Petsmart and Petco (of course), and Home Depot. Would like to take her to the movies, but I am scared! She is not so good at riding in her carrier. It looks like I have a wild beast in my bag! Good Luck! I guess it depends on the management... Also, I always tell myself, they can only tell me to leave.... but even knowing that, I am still scared! Mari |
Here in spain you can take small dogs pretty much every where.I take Lady to the super market when I go shopping and no one has ever said anything.I dont take Jess though, she is bigger and I dont think they would like that..but no one has ever said anything. |
The only place we can take our dogs are the pet places that allow them in. Our state has stick rules on this. |
There is a dog clothing store in the mall down the street from me, and I take Julius there all the time. I'll take him shopping at Neiman Marcus and no one has said anything to me. |
I've taken Frankie to high-end boutiques and the sales girls all went crazy for him. Other places I've seen people bring their smaller dogs include:

The mall (in a carrier with his head poking out)
Inside doggie clothing stores
To the outdoor mall
In high-end boutiques/department stores
|
:D When I only had Oreo, He was black, so he blended in wonderfully in my Black carrier i had for him! .. I snuck him into stores that only said "service animals welcome" .. people didn't notice until we were leaving already LOL.. and they'd tell me no animals allowed.. so i'd say.. well what do you want me to do? i'm already leaving? lol but now that I have Ginger... it's hard to lug the both of them around.. but I do, in a carrier i bought for both of them.. I take them to the mall, Stores (like target, wal-mart etc), The Bank, Grocery Shopping, I even take them to the race track events i go to.. Some signs say dogs only with a leash.. but heck, i don't walk them, i carry them cause they are spoiled lol.. well i do plan to walk them when they get their rabies shots and last giardia shot.. :p but i do absolutely take them everywhere with me.. unless im only going out for about 10-20 minutes i leave them in their puppy-proofed room. :) |
Thanks for all of the great replys. Keep em' comin! I'm just going to have to do it. I know she would love to go everywhere with me. If I get yelled at then I'll know for the future. I have seen people bring their dogs to Home Depot as posted above. I always take her to the pet stores. I'm gonna try some more places and see what happens. I don't have a carrier for her. She hates them. She goes nuts in them and I'm afraid she's gonna hurt herself. |
The federal law for service animals in the United States is a great way to take your dogs anywhere! The Americans with Disabilities Act states that a service animal must be allowed access to any area that an able bodied person can go, this includes restaurants and, basically anywhere. The federal law takes precedence over all state and local ordinances. There are great articles in the Yorkshire Terrier Magazine about why yorkies are so perfect for this work and they don't require much training at all. The law is pretty vaque on the definition of a disability. There are people with minor hearing loss in one ear and they train the dog to bark at certain noises like when the dorrbell rings or a forklift is backing up in Costco or something. There is one lady with Cosette of Cosette's Closet who trained her dog to dial 911. Her dog, Cosette, has saved her life something like 7 times. She suffers from schleraderma. If you get migraine headaches or you are a diabetic you can train the dog to remind you to take your medication or you can train them to detect certain changes in your body chemistry when a headache is about to come on or when your insulin levels are dangerously low. Similarly, an epileptic can train a dog to detect an oncoming seizure. Service animals for people with minor mental disorders like social anxiety, anxiety attacks, etc., need very little "training" because they are a calming influence naturally. I have high blood pressure so my dogs are trained to lick my face and give me love because just having them with me lowers my blood pressure. There is no license or proof of any special training required to use your dog as a service animal. The business owners cannot technically ask you what your disablity is or how the animal services you, although I have found that most do not know the law and will ask these questions anyway. I carry the rabies license, and a business card that simply states the following: "I am a service animal under the Americans with Disabilities Act. I am trained to assist my owner due to a diability. This federal law takes precedence over all state and local laws and ordinances. I am to be allowed access to all places an able bodied person could go when I am with my owner without additional charge or restriction." I also carry with me a Question and Answer sheet put out by the ADA for business owners with explanations of the law in case I run into someone who gives me a hard time. This law allows you to get your dogs into any hotel, theater, any restaurant, any public place basically without extra restrictions. Obviously if they damage anything, you would be responsible, but if they bark or anything, they cannot make you leave just like that cannot make people with a crying baby or fussy children leave. I recently bought some patches and a vest from Raspberry Fields to make it a little easier and more identifiable ,but these are not necessary. To research this further just google "service animals" and go from there. I can post the link for the form to educate business owners if anyone is interested. |

Thats weird Summer because Home Depot is known for being dog friendly. I once saw a guy with his 200-lb mastiff in there on a leash! |

Is this the same for Lowes as well or just Home Depot? |
I take Lil Bear with me to Lowes and Home Depot, she gets tons of pats and hi's no ones ever had a problem there. Though I am scared to take her places cause I don't want to be yelled at. Thanks for the info on service dogs. I suffer from panic attacks and slight hearing loss and I do feel much better when Lil Bear or Moose is with me. My mom suffers from cronic daily migraines and has lost all hearing in her left ear and has attacks too because she can't get out much. I will be looking into the service dog idea for both of us. Where did you get the vest and patches? |
It is so funny reading this post because I was so angry this weekend me and my husband got kicked of home depot for having hailey there. |
Every where except Walmart & Grocery Stores! I take Artie (he's 6 pounds last time I weighed him but he feels like 10) every where; TJ. Maxx, Ross, Marshalls, Dept. Stores all love him and he is not in a bag, just in my arms. If we are in a Mall, "Security" will tell you they are not allowed, but the Dept. Store sales people will allow it since they are scared they will loose the business? Home Depot, Loews and Target allow him in, unless there is a Food Stand? Stay away from "Walmart" and all Grocery Stores and Restaurants unless your in "Carmel" California where they are Pet Friendly/Oriented "Doris Day" is a big Dog Advocate. If you are there he can sit at the table and eat off of his own plate.....no lie! (we shared an entree) A lot of other Tourist got a kick out of it and were laughing & pointing, but it was worth the ridicule we had fun! Any outdoor events Flea Markets/Swap Meets, Street Fairs. Furniture Stores, Art Galleries and all Designer Stores. They are a "Luxury" item and looked at as a "Fashion Acessory", I've had him sit next to me in the Lounge area at the "Chanel" store while sipping complementry Champagne! The Louis Vuitton store in San Francisco, CA knows him. O'h Yeah and in major airports in Orlando, Atlanta, Boston, Sacramento, I had him sitting on a couch while drinking Bloody Mary's in the Delta Crown Room. You can get a day pass if your not a Member. It was during all our "Stop overs" en route. It really made him feel better in between flying, the Bloody Mary's weren't bad either, they helped me flying period! I hate Airports, and I'm not a Drinker. If your Baby is well behaved, no one even notices him, they usually do a double take, smile and usually end up kissing him. I try to make friends with all the sales people so we don't get kicked out? I always try, if they do say something I leave, but after I've finished shopping! :D |
I have taken Cordelia with me pretty much every where. I have taken her with me to Petco, Petsmart, Chipotle, Target, Stonebriar Mall, The Galleria Mall, Glamour Dogs, and Smoothie King. The only place I had a problem with was when I went to the Galleria mall here in Dallas. I went into Club Monaco, and I assume it was the manager of the store, but she gave me this nasty look and rolled her eyes at me. She was at the front of the store when I walked in. So, just to piss her off I went this one girl that was sort of in the back folding shirts and I had her help me. She went on and on about Cordelia being so cute. Anyways, the whole time I was in the store that one girl just kept giving me dirty looks, she never said anything. I think it all comes down too, what you carry your yorkie in. My carrier looks just like a purse and I usually keep it zipped up so Cordelia can't stick her head out. I don't think I would carry Cordelia with me to a restaurant or a movie. I would be afraid she would start to bark or whine. I know I wouldn't want to hear that if I was the other person. |
So other yorkie owners sneak their baby's around too! It just breaks my heart to leave my Zoey alone, because she starts to tremble and do a very sad high pitched whine, when she knows I'm getting ready to leave. I finally just decided to take her out with me and have taken her to the grocey store (Jewel, Dominicks) and to Target. I snuck her into a movie once, and she made me really nervous at one point when she started to growl at some people up high, moving around! :) In Dallas (where my parents live), I've taken her to outdoor and indoor malls and to city halls. The only place I've gotten kicked out of is Walmart, both in Chicago and Dallas! Zoey loves her carrier because she knows she gets to come along...and everytime, I reach for my keys, she scrambles to climb into it! |
Jasmine is 9 months and has never been in a carrier. Do you think it's to late to start? She absolutely hated her crate. By the way, she is very well behaved and she hardly ever barks. |
Just wanted to say a big thanks Kim - I printed out the service animals info. and figure I can carry this with me until I can get some little cards made up. I also have high blood pressure and take a mild antidepressant so I think I'll start taking Tuck a few more places - we already go to K-mart, bookstores, Blockbuster and even Subway once. I really didn't think about those other "disabilities" that aren't so obvious. Awesome!!!! Tucker thanks you too. Dana |

I live in Dallas and I always wanted to take Fred to the Galleria since he's finally up to date on his shots but the many times that I have been there, I have never seen any dogs! |
I have high blood pressure and pointed out to my husband some time ago that he was lucky that I got Carter to help control it! Great information!!! Thanks! |
Generally speaking, the higher end parts of town (like Beverly Hills, Century City, etc.) have a better time w/ allowing dogs. We take him to outdoor malls, as these are usually pet friendly. A lot of places have a "No Animals" policy...but it is possibly enforced 60 - 70% of the time. We've tried to go to Home Depot w/ our yorkie. One time...no problem. Another time, we couldn't. And the funny thing is...w/ all the toxic chemicals that is present at Home Depot...they will not let in a dog? (I do understand that it is a possible liability IF an animal is to bite someone, but we have our dog in a shopping cart.). I could step on a nail at Home Depot and sue for everything...but my yorkie isn't permitted because he might bite someone? We usually can't bring him into Starbucks. I understand, as this is a health code violation. Not a problem. I don't have any issues about this at food estalishments. My gf tries to bring him in though. I don't say anything and let her attempt this. Thanks for the link about Service Animals. Hmm...that is a great idea! |
Yorkie Girl---what kind of carrier do you have for both of them? I always take Hallie shopping with me, Simon hates going anywhere like that. I've taken her to Target (which is very friendly here), the mall, grocery shopping, not so much anymore here in NY but when I was traveling through Hershey, PA they were very pet friendly and I took both of them in stores with me. |

Home Depot used to be one of the friendliest places for dogs around here, but just recently (past few months) they put up a BIG NO DOGS ALLOWED sign. :( |
