Well gee....after reading all this I wouldn't buy from the amish even if I could see the puppy...just my thoughts, but this kinda thing disgusts me. |
Amish Living in southern MD for many years, I saw first hand how the Amish treat dogs. They are considered livestock and treated as such. They live in barns and out buildings no better then chicken coups. A favorite Amish trick is to breed a Yorkie male to a Silky terrier female..a normal size breeding Yorkie female of 5 to 6 pounds has a very short breeding life in a mill..so they use larger Silkies. I got so disgusted with the Amish, I wouldn't so much as buy eggs from one. |
I feel so stupid - I never knew that the Amish did this, NO IDEA. Of course, I've always looked pretty locally for my dogs. What is flooring me is you always hear about the Amish being so God fearing and good, etc. I guess that doesn't apply to the animals they care for? Like I said, reading this thread makes me feel VERY uneducated because I had NO clue this was going on. |
Amish Aimee..you live in California, I doubt you run across any Amish! LOL |
lol Pat!! Well, there is that! I just would have thought after my self proclaimed extensive research on Yorkies I would have known this by now! No more self proclaiming for me! |
I had no ideal about the Amish and puppy mills. I am never buying anything the Amish makes. It is so sad to hear your stories about how those poor dogs are treated, they deserve much better. Good that you asked about the breeder before you got a puppy from them. A lot of great people and info on the site.............Cindy |
Even if a breeder is on "referral," you will not be able to register a pup purchased after the date the breeder was notified they are in that status. The only way to be sure is to call AKC and ask if the breeder is in good standing. Ask the breeder for their full name (first and last) as well as their kennel name. I learned the hard way . . . my breeder wasn't suspended but under referral and Carter still isn't registered and may never be able to be AKC registered. |
