When mine were that little they couldnt climb stairs. I think they were about 4 lbs when they did |
Ollie is 2 1/2 ponds, she goes down the two outside steps, I have never tried her on a full flight of stairs. Have you tried coaxing with treats. or just setting him on the bottom step first and let him get used to one step at a time? |
And you think this is a "bad thing" ??? Man, I wish mine wouldn't ever learn to go down stairs, or for that matter, jump off the couch, chair, bed etc!!! Seems like once they learn to jump down, there's no stopping them!! When they're young, sometimes, I am able to put them up on the bed so I can get something done. (Of course, I don't leave them there and go out of the room to do something else!! Just thought I'd better clairify that before I get in trouble for leaving them on the bed!!) Suz |

Ginger's much bigger, but as a pup, she was also afraid to come down the stairs. (she did that little butt over head thing once, :) fortunately, I was sitting on the steps just below her, so she didn't go far). I just took her upstairs from time to time, and sat on the next step. She'd want to be with me so badly (and my presence seemed to make her feel safer) that she'd make it down to me with some coaxing. When she'd get to me I'd go down a step or two (still sitting), and coax her to join me. I don't remember how many times we went through this, but I think it was most likely about once/day for a week. Much of what I've done with Ginger has been motivated by my experience with my previous furbaby. For her entire life, she would sit at the top of the stairs and cry for someone -me- to get her, and I would. But since she had no trouble going UP the stairs, this would happen ALL the time. I just put up with it all those years...no idea what I was thinking! :) |
I live on a the 3rd floor in an apartment...Kelsey runs up and down, she loves them. I think they give her good exercise. She actually "races" me to the top and downstairs to go potty...she wears me out. By the time we are both up the 3rd flight we are pooped and ready for some yummy cold water! lol I think it just depends on the dogs personality. At first Kelsey looked down in fear and wouldn't go down them but just up...and now she does both. Maybe your baby isn't used to them..or is just lazy and doesn't prefer to go down them. :confused: ;) |
My AprilLove just started going up my stairs yesterday (she made it all the way to the top!!) she is a little over 13 weeks old. She was scared at first but did 2 full steps the day before and now she loves it. But she is still scared to come down. So she goes up then whines for me to come get her. I have a Maltese that has a top heavy body, so she always runs down on just her two front feet, it is funny to watch but her hiney tends to roll up into the air and just float there as she descends, like she is almost going to flip over. I think she carries all of her 5.5 lbs in her head and chest! |
