Is this true? Yesterday was Maddie's first puppy class. A couple in there had a question regarding digging. The trainer said that it's us who teaches our dogs to dig. They learn by watching you dig. Then the trainer proceeded to ask the couple if they have been gardening lately. The couple said no. Is that true? Do we really teach our dogs to dig? Maddie digs while she plays. My husband and I live in an apartment and have nothing to dig in. In that case how would she explain Maddie when she digs? I always assumed it was a natural instinct. |
I don't beleive this because I haven't gardened a day in my life and my Yorkie digs. I'd be interested to hear other views on this also. |
i think your right, digging is a dogs natural instinct like dogs like to play, but im no expert though |

Ive never heard that before either, and it seems a little off to me, but Id be curious what others thought about it.. :) |
No - it is a natural instinct in the dog. When dogs were in the wild and had to make their own beds they would pull grass, leaves together to try and make a bed. The reason some of them go round and round before they lay down was to walk the tall grass down. |

I too agree that this is natural instinct. i live in an apartment in NYC where everything is cement around us, yet Nikko digs like a maniac. He has never been to a garden or seen anyone digging. I always assumed he did this naturally from instinct. |

I dont do alot of gardening and my dogs dig. I think it is natural instinct to do it. |
We garden all the time and neither of my boys dig...chance eats alittle grass now and then but they are not diggers. They just sit back and watch us dig. ;) |
It makes you wonder where they got their training from. I seriously wonder about people like that. A dog by nature will dig, get into the trash, chase birds or whatever because it is in their blood. I don't chase cars but our Shepherd loves to. Please LOL Michelle |
Perplexed Unless my husband is digging in my sheets before he lays down when I am not at home.... I'd say this lady is full of .... Puppy Poop! It only takes one bug to crawl into the dirt and a Yorkie wil unearth an entire feild trying to find it! We teach them... Give me a break... Ask her who taught your pup to poop in the middle of the living room carpet! I have never been fed such a line.... Perplexed... I'll say! |
Hmmmm, I taught her?!?!? I don't remember ever putting my nose down in the hole..... Find yourself another trainer...that one's whacked  (bless their heart). |
Mine dig imaginary holes, hide their treats, and then proceed to cover it with imaginary dirt. :D |
