If I were you I would change trainer. I wouldn't trust somebody who has such ridiculous ideas. Digging is a natural instinct. |
I wonder where PetSmart gets their trainers... |
HMMMM, I ask where she came up with that. I'd love to hear her answer. As far as i know it's natural instincts. :) |
I don’t think that’s true because I never dig—actually, I’m hardly ever outside. And Ginger still likes to dig. She’s never outside either, but she likes to dig in the carpet. |

No, that's a dog's instinct to dig. Puppies will dig in their nesting box and they've never been outside. |
That is complete nonsense that we teach them to dig, it's instinct. They bury bones to hide them, much like squirrels hoard nuts. They dig to find bugs and other things to eat, they dig to make a soft place to bed down and to escape confinement etc... As someone else suggested, I think I would change trainers, I would question that trainers understanding of dog psychology which I would think would be pretty important in training dogs. |
That trainer is BOGUS! Digging is their instinct! That's not a "trick" you need to teach your dog. I have never ever shown my dog how to dig my bedding, flipping and tearing my sheets. Aggie, she does that all on her own. Yeah, change your trainer, soon! |
I think this trainer is a little confused. What they should have said was that while digging is a natural instinct please refrain from digging or filling in holes in front of your dog as some dogs like to mimic what their owners do. I have actually seen several dogs do this, but that does not mean that your dog has to be digging because you were, they don't have to see you digging in order to do it as it is a natural instinct for them to dig. So the trainer was not right because he didn't give you all the correct and necessary info. |
I'm not sure I'd have much faith in a trainer that made such a claim. |
I'd print this thread out, and hand it to her on my way out. |

It depends on the breed. Dogs that were used to hunt and kill vermin are more likely to dig. At least, that's what I've read when researching breeds. . . And every dog is unique, some just really like to dig. Now where they dig might depend on you. My Yorkie Poo isn't allowed outside when I'm putting in new bulbs or seeds, because he watches me, and as soon as I go inside he digs them up. . . |

As for Yorkies digging, it's natural. Like barking at air!! It's just something "they" do. If my guys only did what I taught them, they would all be able to feed themselves, change the pee pads and clean up poop. Course, they'd all be able to type too!! Sus |
