You're right, I never have heard a peep out of those dogs but I always assumed it was because they were so well trained. I hope you're wrong about the voice boxes because that is just sick. Besides, isn't it like cheating? Think about it. You and I are competing. You show Lexi and she is the perfect showdog because you have spent the hours and dedication into training her. I show Nikko and he appears to be quiet and well behaved as well but it's because the poor boy has no voice box. Should I win over you? If that is a practice, it should be grounds for disqualification. It isn't fair to those who have intact dogs. It give the "mute" dog owners an advantage over the other ones. |

Unless as someone pointed out earlier that they are so used to coming to and competing in dog shows that they don't react the way our dogs would. I mean dogs get used to certain things. Nikko used to bark like a maniac at the blender. I use it every morning to make protein shakes for hubby. He has gotten so used to the sound that now he totally ignores it and sits at my feet quietly while I use it. I guess the same could be true for the dog shows. Maybe I am being naive but I can't see someone taking their tiny little yorkie to the vet to have their throat sliced the way BabyFidgette said. It's too cruel. |
i think we are all naive, its totally impossibe that not 1 dog ever barks.. sorry cant comprehend that one. something is done to this animals... gotta be... |

barking This is very unfair...Please stop blaming the show breeder for something very few do..and it is the commerical breeders, millers with a ton of dogs who debark. I had a few pets I groomed who were debarked..owners lives in condo's and apts. Dogs bark at dogs shows...you should go to a Specialty and listen to a bunch of rascals penned next to each other..BUT When you are grooming or ready to enter the ring, most do not bark, they are well adjusted to people and noise...there are NO points off for a barking..My Chopper cocked his leg on the table, barked at the judge and he still got the major in Ohio some years ago. I do not think most realize how socialized most show dogs are..they are so used to traveling, new people, hotels..they do not bark at everything that moves like some pets who are home most of the time..Kate has barked about 5 times in 10 months of her life. She gets excited, licks and kisses you, but finds no reason to bark for attention. |
I have to say that the only real debarking I hear about is done at puppymills and it's EVIL and cruel. I have never known a debarked dog but I would have to think people who live in apartments or tight living conditions may be guilty of this also. I've HEARD people ask why certain dogs weren't debarked in an apartment complex I lived in once.... I have never heard of this practice in my reading about show dogs and can imagine a select few have done this....but I really doubt it is a common thing. The shows I've been to (not many but enough to say I've been)... I heard little yaps coming from the small doggies. Usually when they were just sitting around near the big grooming area. In the ring I believe their training kicks in and they just strut their stuff.... |
You should come to a dogshows where mine are and listen carefully to their voice boxes . This is not fair to always blame the breeders - exhibitors . |
Some bark but not all. I doubt that means they are debarked. Shelby only barks at the doorbell. Why would show dogs be any different? |
Last year I spent the day with a breeder in Miami. She had all her dogs debarked! I had considered trading with her but wasn't comfortable knowing that one of mine would get debarked, so we rescued Feebie from her for $850. |
