New Member 1 Attachment(s) Hello All, I'm a new member and just wanted to introduce myself. I'm one of those bleeding heart animal lovers that can't say no to a special needs dog. We've had plenty of them. Most notable is the beagle that was allergic to absolutely EVERYTHING. If it grew he was allergic - if it was meat chicken or fish - he was allergic to it. The only thing he wasn't allergic to was dairy and I think you see the irony in that. We made do with fresh lamb and rice (before the craze started). That was what he was the least allergic to. But oh what a great dog he was. We spent a fortune on him but he was worth it. I also taught a Collie sign language. I've joined YorkieTalk.com because after years and years of yearning I have finally allowed myself to buy a Yorkie puppy. In fact I have arrangements with a breeder (also a friend) to get one from her next litter. My Yorkie was conceived a couple of weeks ago and I guess will be born around Mother's Day. (How appropriate huh?) My first question is whether or not I should get a male or a female. I have a five year old male German Shepherd and a seven year old female shi tzu. The shi tzu, which is so often the case, is the alpha in this pack of two. The Shep is her loyal follower and protector. This is very cool since we have coyote in the neighborhood. Not that I let them go out alone but just in case....it is good to know. The little one will be safe. I will look forward to your comments. Thanks Lou PS After reading some of your posts I am very eager to have you all as friends. |
Welcome to yorkietalk! It is very nice to have you hear! You have a really cute little guy! |
Nice of you to join us Welcome to Yt...I hope you enjoy your stay here. You will find yt very helpful and meet wonderful people here as I have. Hope to see pics of your new baby in the future. |
Male vs. Female? If you have a small dog already that's female, know that if you get a male yorkie, he may harass her until he's neutered. It doesn't matter if she's spayed or not. Many males got nuts even over discharge. Even after he's neutered there is no guarantee, but theory has it that he should leave her alone at that point. Now, not all males are this way...just most. SO! In my opinion, I would recommend you get another little girl. Just remember that a true Yorkie temperment is a terrier first and a toy second. She should have no problems dealing w/ the Shih Tzu's dominate personality. |
Welcome ! you will love your little Yorkie! |

Welcome! I have two girls and one boy. Although I have a little boy that is definitely a Mommy's boy and is my constant shadow, I am partial to little girls. I think it's because of the marking males sometimes do, but of course if you don't spay than you have the heat cycle to go through. I guess I would just pick the one that captures my heart. I was actually going to purchase a female (and one was available), but I just had to have this little boy and I have never regretted it. |
Welcome to YT! You will love this site!!! Everyone is so helpful and supportive!! It was my saving grace after I got Madison. GOOD LUCK! :D |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk! Can't help with your male vs. female question as I only have one Yorkie! I think if I were to get another Yorkie I would get another male...they are just so darned cute! But any yorkie will do...you will just love it!!! Can't wait to see pics of your new little baby! |

This is an article by Sharda Baker on the very subject of CHOOSING A MALE OR FEMALE DOG One of the first decisions that a prospective dog owner (regardless of breed) has is determining if a male or female dog is the best match. There are certain characteristics that most male and female dogs will have, and knowing these characteristics will help you make the best choice. Even if you plan to spay or neuter your Yorkshire Terrier , it is still important to consider the characteristics of male and female dogs, as they will still be present even after the procedure, although the characteristics will not be as pronounced. Avoid the temptation to just pick the "cutest" puppy or older dog, and try to determine which gender will be the best possible match for you and your family. MALES One of the most obvious physical characteristics of the male dog is that it is generally larger than females of the same breed, and eats more. Males are heavier, taller and stronger than female dogs, although this may be particularly of concern more in the larger breed dogs. Usually the size difference will only be a few inches in height, but it may be more substantial in weight. Male dogs tend to eat significantly more food than non-pregnant females. Male Yorkies may be a little more aggressive and independent than female dogs. Again, this is a more important consideration in larger breeds than smaller breeds. Larger breed male dogs tend to be more difficult to manage in small, confined areas and often do not socialize well with other males. This will be particularly true if there are female dogs in the area that are in heat. A male dog often will form a closer bond with one person, whereas a female dog tends to bond equally with many people. Male dogs tend to develop quicker sexually than female dogs, and will display sexual tendencies at a younger age. This is a concern if there are other dogs in the house or in the neighbourhood that may come into heat. The male dogs will tend to roam, as they can smell female dogs in heat for many miles and if allowed, may even be gone for several days in a row in pursuit of females. Neutering your male Yorkshire Terrier may help eliminate this problem. If you choose a Yorkie male dog and plan to use him for breeding purposes it will be important to construct a solid fence to contain him, even though he may be small! If you purchase a pair of dogs for breeding purposes, it will be important to monitor how aggressive the male becomes when the female is in heat. You may find that the male becomes very possessive of the female - even towards humans. This may be a concern if you have small children in house, or do not have the dogs kennelled. In addition, the male may become aggressive towards the female if she is not receptive to his advances. Any breeding pair of dogs needs to be carefully monitored. Male dogs tend to be more difficult to train than female dogs (girls not a word about your men please!), and are more independent in nature. They also tend to be friskier and require more exercise. Males may be more difficult to socialize with other animals and other dogs, and need to begin socialization training at a young age. FEMALES Female dogs tend to be smaller than male dogs of the same breed and are often less aggressive. However, a female dog protecting a litter of puppies can sometimes be just as aggressive as a male. A female Yorkshire Terrier with her first litter should be carefully monitored for the first few weeks, to see how protective she becomes of the puppies. Females will come into heat at least twice a year for approximately three weeks. During this time there will be a noticeable discharge of fluid from the female, that is designed to attract the male dog. Spaying the female dog will prevent this from occurring. If the female is to be used for breeding purposes, there are products on the market designed to address this problem. Female Yorkshire Terriers tend to be less excitable and easier to train. They can, however, become easily cowed or shy if treated harshly, or scolded in a rough or angry tone of voice. Female dogs tend to bond with many people. They may be less protective in general than male dogs, however are also easier to socialize with other animals. Female dogs will fight with other females, but tend to get along generally well with male dogs. Usually a group of female dogs will establish a hierarchy, and will bond with each other after the initial pecking order is established. SIMILARITIES With both male and female dogs, it is important to consider the amount of time, attention and effort that will be spent in training the dogs and socializing with them afterwards. Both male and females require a similar amount of exercise, training, feeding, general care, and love. In addition, regular veterinary checkups and yearly vaccinations will be required for both genders. Deciding on a male or female Yorkshire Terrier is largely a personal decision. Unless the dog is being used for breeding purposes, consideration should be given to spaying or neutering the animal as soon as recommended by your veterinarian, to prevent unwanted pregnancies and puppies. If the dog is to be used for breeding purposes, it is the responsibility of the owner to keep the dog away from other dogs to prevent unwanted pregnancies. As I said om the beginning, I think it's really personal choice whether you have a male or a female doggy. Both are just gorgeous!! http://www.myyorkiesecrets.com/ |
Welcome to YorkieTalk . |
Welcome to Yorkietalk! I have a male and a female and there are pluses and minuses to both of them. I would just choose the pup you want most and not worry about the sex. |
:welcome4: to YT!!! Your baby is sooo cute! And congrats on getting a yorkie soon! Good luck on deciding which one to choose! |
Thanks for the advice Helen, I wanted to send you a special thanks for the advice and the links. You gave me a great gift. |
Welcome to YT....Love those big brown eyes :).....can't wait to see your new addition as well. |
Hey Lou! Lou: I am also new...and also waiting for my puppy! (I am moving soon) It is very exciting and choosing between a boy or girl pup is a fun part of getting a puppy. I think that like people there are general rules that may apply mostly to females/males...BUT no one really knows the puppies like the breeder. I want a girl doggie, but if the breeder says to me: Look, I know you wanted a girl...but I've got a boy that, knowing you and your personality, would be perfect for you! I would take the boy. You know? I think there is such a thing as "soul mates" - maybe not with people, but definitely dogs! I'll tell ya, I've never had a dog that wasn't somehow "meant to be" with my me/my family. When you meet your dog...YOUR true dog, the dog you're meant to be with, you KNOW you've met your dog. If at all possible, try to let your breeder help you make that decision once the pups are born and really start to develope personalities. ...and CONGRATUALTIONS!!! Regardless of what sex you choose...your life is about to be turned up side down by the best thing that ever happened to anyone: A DOGGIE! If you ever need a chat, drop me a PM! Natalie |
Welcome to YT! :) |
I decided on a girl Well, I decided on a girl. I had thought I might breed a male but have ruled that out. I want a little girl. So, now all I have to do is wait and hope that the litter isn't all boys! But if that happens I will be just as happy with one of them! I just want the end of the month to get here so I will know and then for 8 weeks to pass so I can go get her/him! I don't see how I will be able to keep it together that long!!!! THanks for the input people! Lou |
She's here! Greetings from sunny Palm Beach where I am vacationing. My baby was born one week ago and the boy vs boy choice ended up being a mute point. Mom only had two puppies and both were girls. I'm a happy camper. We are trying to choose between three names now. Skeeter, Cookie, and Twinkie. I'm leaning very heavily toward Skeeter. Thanks for all the support and good wishes from everyone! |
Your shi tzu is very cute!! I don't think it will matter if you get a male or a female. From reading all the posts, both are fabulous!! Do you want to buy dresses and lots of bows?? If so, then go for a female. If not, go for a male. Either way you're gonna get a great friend. Welcome to YT. |
