I made a little gate that goes into our entrance way. So anybody has to open and shut the 2 to get in or out. When I go to the door she stays behind the other one. Ella is pretty good and will usually stay back unless she is going out too but I still wouldn't trust her. I had to build 2 because she jumped the first one and I turned around and she was in the garage with us. It is a bit of a pain but we are used to it now and I wouldn't have it any other way. She has no road sense and is so excitable she would take off too. |
I haven't worked with this one much yet, but my trainer also showed me how to put them on a 30 ft. leash and have them walk around in the front yard. When they get near the road, you give a slight tug (easy jerk) on the leash and say "NO, BACK IN THE YARD!" in a loud comanding voice. Each time they get to the border of your yard, you do this and they will eventually stay inside the boundries of your yard. You can also work with come in this manner and praise them when they come to you. But honestly, things have been so hectic for me that I am sorry to say that I have not worked on this as I should. |
That really is an AWFUL thing! Is there any way to fence in the yard? A couple other things.....I LOVE your avatar!!!!!! and.....I DIDN'T KNOW YOU GOT A NEW BABY!!!!!!!! She is absolutely GORGEOUS!!!! Your girls are all beautiful! Woops, getting off track here.... I wish I could help, but I don't have any experience with that. Mine come to the door and I say STAY!!! louder when they are little and they pick up on it real quick. Now I just say it gently. Don't be afraid of hurting her feelings by yelling STAY!!!! and NO!! NO!!! STAY!!!! (I'm sure you get my point...and I don't mean Yelling, just a very stern, deep but loud voice) when you go to the door. ALWAYS remember the potential for her running out. |
2 Attachment(s) I have the same problem with my sami when I am off to work or to retrieve mail, and the only thing that helps me is I pick him up and take him with me to get the mail when I go to work I put him in the hallway where it is gated and I also put another gate on top of the bottom gate! so there are two gates one on top of the other, the gates are swinging gates so you can install one above the other! here are some pics of the gates.. |

I have never had this problem with any of my dogs (ever) til Miss Stubborn Tori came along. She is something else. Good thing she is cute because she is one bad pup.LOL She is my trash picker, mud jumper, toilet paper eater, chewer, and all about monster. The worst part is even though she is a bad girl she has one of the best personalities. Loveable, sweet, hyper, and so fun... |
I only glanced through the other posts, but it doesn't look like anybody has suggested this. To me it is the obvious solution. ALWAYS pick your dog up when you answer the door! We did this with Pivo and now he knows that anyone who comes to the door will most likely be coming inside anyway, so he learned. Especially since you only seem to have one runner - pick her up! Problem solved! |

When my Reggie was a young pup, she did the same thing. The grandkids would get off the bus and run towards her because they were excited to see her. Thinking it was a game, she would take off like a bat out of hell. I ran after her and finally stopped because I realized she was playing and I wasn't going to play that game. After I yelled for her to stop, she looked and saw I wasn't chasing after her anymore. I got down on the ground and then called her to me. She came running into my arms. She's got out of our fenced in back yard several times, mostly when someone wasn't paying attention and she snuck out of the gate when they opened it. By not chasing her, the fun is gone and she would come running back to me. I would calmly walk toward her but never run after her. Hope this helps. Baby gates are for babies and not tall enough for some yorkies. You said you tried the x-pen but she jumped that. Are you sure she's jumping it or does she crawl up it? If she's crawling up it, get a piece of plastic and attach it to the inside of the pen. Have you tired the tallest x-pen, the ones that are 4 feet high? |
< just chased her up and down my block for 20 minutes. > Right there is your problem, you're chasing her and she thinks it's a game. First of all, I would pick her up before opening the door or put her in another room when someone comes to the LOCKED door. If she darts out, don't panic, and by all means, don't chase her. I know that's difficult not to do, but when they think it's a game, they are going to just keep running. And I'm speaking from experience. In your harshest voice, yell, TORI STOP. If you have a porch, go down off the porch, get down on your hands and knees and encourage her to come, in a sweet voice, then praise her for coming. Tried it, and eventually I have to chase her back towards my house because she runs to the end of our street that is very busy. I don't chase her til she gets close to the corner then I have to. That is a busy street and I don't want her to get hit. As for picking her up when someone comes to the door. Well that sounds simple enough but it doesn't teach her. Vanchick gave me wonderful advise with the leash. I am going to be working hard with her for the next few weeks. I have done the proper training, I don't allow my dogs to misbehave. Tori is just very stubborn. Meant to add, she is jumping it not crawling up it, and I will continue to use baby gates in my house the only time she jumps them is to run outside. Someone also asked what does she want out for. My neighbors cat that sits at my window or runs across my yard, (just to drive Tori nuts) and a squirrel. |
Susan did this for a while. There is another dog in the neighbor that she wants to visit. Snap a leash on her every time you open the door. It's a major pain, but at least you have "handle." I never trust her outside anymore without a leash. She can be gone in a flash. I pick her up and/or put a leash on her anytime the door is open. If people are in and out (like for bringing in groceries) I put a leash on her and make her trot back and forth with me or lock her in the bedroom. I agree -- it's a matter of life and death. |
I read where someone used a scat-mat in front of the door.. worked for them.. but she might figure out how to jump across it.. However it might be a good tool to use while training to stay back.. don't know.. just a thought. |
