Invisible Fences? Hi, I don't have a fenced in yard. Instead we have an invisible fence that we got for our lab. I was wondering if the invisible fence would work with a yorkie. Do any of you use one? We are still researching things we need before we actually bring a pup home Any input would be greatly appreciated! |
I have heard that they have not made an invisible fence yet for a dog under 7 lbs. The collar weighs too much for them to be comfortable. At least I haven't run across one. |
Thats what I am worried about I will do some research and read up on the fences and small dogs |
Do you still have the manual to the one that you bought? It should state clearly the size limitations. The one I seen said 7+ pounds. I would definately listen to this warning because it could make a tiny yorkie miserable. I have heard of people on here using a wired electric fence. |
well my lab doesnt wear the collar anymore we havent used it in years im gonna have to go see what brand it is I looked at Invisible Fence Brand and they make a collar small enough for a yorkie They Say |
There are several people in my town that use them with yorkies. |
Our big Lab has one, but I wouldn't use it for the Yorkies. They are too small IMO. |
If it is old I would definately call the company. I wouldn't compare it to the new ones out that have been upgraded. |
I read somewhere that invisible fences shouldn't be used with little terriers because they are stubborn and brave, so they'll endure the electric shock to go off on a run if they really want to. Julie |

I used to work for Invisible Fencing....these collars are NOT effective (or humane actually) for small breeds, as it tends to change their personalities and create very timid or sometimes aggressive dogs. From my experience, the terriers did not do well with shock collars. And like any device, they are not always reliable, the "shock" will sometimes go off without being properly triggered. These collars are often ineffective even in the larger breeds (especially high pain threshold breeds such as Malamutes..etc), who will "endure" the shock repeatedly and run through the fence. I personally find it abusive to any animal...but that is JMO. Francie |
THe other problem with an electric fence is that it will not keep larger dogs or other animals OUT of your yard. That could be a problem if there is the possibility of a dog wandering loose or coyotes. |
Tells you what I know..I didn't think it ACTUALLY shocked them..I personally am not fond of any type of pens or fencing or chaining or any of that. but I think if others have them it is their choice. I'm not against them just don't care for them. But I have to say that is why I will always live in the country with lots of property lol.. |
OH wait I didn't mean fenced in yards on that..lol..those are great for kids and pets.. |
:interesti :idontknow I have never heard of a Invisible Fence. Where have I've been???? Oh no, I hope I'm not lost again!!! :yelrotflm |

I'm terribly sorry...was I being Politcally Incorrect? Oh Good! Its early...but if my visual acumem doesn't desert me, she ASKED how appropriate this fence would be for a small Yorkshire Terrier. I replied from PERSONAL experience. And believe me, I was using Restraint on the visuals I could have provided this forum. And although I'm sure the word "abusive" is not a pleasant thing to see....rest assured...what the animals FEEL is far worse... "Careful"? I've been to that place....to my shame.....never again... I must admit that when I saw the question, I thought "oh, here we go again". HOWEVER, I personally think that when someone asks for our opinions, it is okay for us to express them. If someone considers electric fences to be abusive, now is an okay time to say so, IMHO. |
We have a system installed in our yard We have 2 dogs. A Corgi and a Yorkie. We have a hidden fence by a company called Petsafe Hidden fence. We had it installed in September. Our Yorkie weighs 7.9 lbs as of Friday and he wears his collar quite easily and comfortably. He enjoys the outdoors alot and had no trouble at all adapting to our system. He has zero aggressive behavior and has an amazing personality. He is not at all bothered by our system. The Petsafe system gives an auditory warning in a wide zone in front of the buried wire. He doesn't usually get beyond this and when he gets the warning beep from his collar he just heads back into the yard. We personally have been very happy with our petsafe hidden fence for our Yorkie. I especially like it in the front yard so he won't go near the street. :) |
Thanks for all the feedback! Our hidden fence is also Petsafe. Right now, I am thinking that the fence might not be the best idea thanks for all the insight |
I'm still surprised it actually shocks the dog. I thought it did that you know when you put your tongue on a battery thing..a little jolt..i didn't think it actually shocked..so I agree thats mean. Poor dog thinkin it's on the trail of a cute lil ol kitty and bam it's slammed in the electric chair..not nice..not nice at all.. |

Scared outta my mind now!!! Hey all, I haven't been on here in quite a while, I'm having an invisible fence installed tomorrow by the company called "Watch Dog". I did explain my worries that she is a 7 pound Yorkie and have heard that these fences can hurt a small dog. They told me that they have different levels of shock or whatever they called it and they start with the lowest one, they will let me feel it before they put it on Trixie, so I know how it feels. But now reading all the replies, I'm scared outta my mind about it!!!! Has anyone's dog been actually hurt because of one of these? |

Here is a thread that got a little heated but not too bad. It discusses the pros and cons of an electric wire and also the buried type. Everyone here knows that I use and electric wire and it works just fine in our home. It hasn't worked in probably a few months and isn't even plugged in anymore but knowing it is there has kept Rebel in the backyard where he belongs. This thread is 9 pages long but is a good read... http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...light=electric |

My sister has the Petsafe invisible fence. She raves about it. She said that it only took her minpin a day to be trained by it. It beeps 3 times before first, warning the dog that it has passed the boundries. So they have that time to get back behind the fence. The dog learns quickly not to pass it again. IMO feel that it is okay for a dog over 7lbs. I would rather have a dog recieve a small zap than be hit by a car if there are no other choices. I feel like it is more responsible than letting a dog repeatedly escape from a yard. |

People have a tendency to discredit things that they aren't educated about. I do not feel that it is abusive. Abuse to me is when someone beats their dogs, neglects their dogs or allows them to run freely where they can get hurt or hit by a car. It isn't fair to label everyone that uses them as abusive dog owners. It simply isn't true. Those that know me know that my dogs are very loved and spoiled. They get pampered, go for rides and all three sleep with me...gets a little crowded at times, but they're my babies. |
We are planning on building a house and the addition we are going to move in to doesnt allow fences so we are going to do the invisible fence. I have read up on them and they are safe to use. The dogs dont even need the collars on wonse they have learned the perimeters. The house In am in now is fenced both front and back yard ortherwise Chachi would have run off by now. We are going to put the invisible fencing in the front and back yard of the new house. |
Thanks to all who have replied, I do feel much better!!! Like I said, I'm having one installed tomorrow and will let you know how it works out. |

Welcome to YT! And FYI just skip over any posts that might seem offensive to you. We are really a nice community! Personally, I would never put anyone who owns an invisible fence in the same category as someone who beats their dog (an abuser.) |
