price I charge the same for either sex. When I was in Md, I had many more calls for males the females..I think many people have discovered the truth about Yorkies..the boys are the MOST wonderful companion pets.. |
The biggest diff I think is supply and demand. We also ask more for our females than our males. On our last litter I had TEN people on a waiting list hoping for females (and that others would drop out) and I had none for males. When I ask why they would rather have a female than a male they never even know why. For some reason EVERYONE wants females! |

In an article in Yorkie magazine it says that price is usually higher for females because fewer females are born AND more people want them. It also says that cost depends on individual breeders and it is higher in certain parts of the country. Price can also reflect quality of the pup. The closer they are to standard, the more breeders will charge. On a personal note I didn't want to deal with leg lifting. I wanted someone that would squat on a pee pad. |

Female vs Male Ok, I have found out recently the cost of female vs male.Of course my situation is a little different. I hope to show one day....and I want a female...I have found breeders want more for their females. I am guessing, that most show people do not want to risk an owner buying a bitch and then breeding her. It could potentially damage the many years of work that the breeder has put into her line....and that makes a lot of sense to me..... Now, if I were buying a pet quality, then I am not sure why the breeders would want more for a bitch than a male.....esp if they dont care if you breed the dog or not. I do find it interesting on this board, when the topic gets controversial, then some usually calls the comments...."complaining", and that makes me wonder where that is coming from......I see these posts as allowing everyone to have their own opinion....and I like that alot.....and you know what......I have a choice to agree or not to agree......what fun that is!!! Its kinda like my ex-husband, he would say that if I did not agree with him I was b----ing...????...not that I had my own opinion.......well, you guessed it.......he is just that.....an "EX:....:):) LOL And boy do I love passionate people.....bring em on...... |
I dont breed, but if I was to breed ,and I knew I could make a little extra off of the females,I probably would. Like somebody said, Its a business, and theres alot of work and lovens that go into it. :) But at the same time if I ever came accross someone that was down on their luck (money wise) and really had their heart set on a female, I would (because I'm soft hearted) either lower the price or work something out with them. Mabie weekly or monthly payments. |

Both of my male dogs are excellent companions but the next yorkie I get will be a female. Bo never has hiked his leg to pee and I'm glad but my male schnauzer has killed the phlox by my mailbox and peed on my hydrangeas and my daffodils and my shrubs and my flower beds and I'm sick of it. Who wants to weed their flower beds after a dog has relieved himself there. Ugh! |
Well, since I started this thread, I’d like to thank everyone for their input. I was just curious and you’ve collectively answered my question! Sounds like the major consensus is that it is because of supply and demand and there’s a minor consensus that it’s because females can be bred. I was specifically looking for a little boy because of temperament – I wanted a lap puppy – so, a lower price was just a bonus for me. I couldn’t help but be curious about why he cost less. I know, I know, some say girls are just as sweet, but he’s my first one and you can’t blame me for stacking the deck. As fun as he is, I’ll probably end up with a girl too! If one yorkie is good, more is better and many are best, right? |

LOL!!! Harley pees on everything but the kitchen sink!!! I love him to death, but my little She-Ra was a frilly girl...loved dresses, bows, etc. Harley WIL NOT wear clothes!!! I gave $500 for She-Ra, her brothers went for $450. I am guessing they sell them more due to them being able to have babies. Every "spayed" female I have seen has been a little less. One I called about when I bought She-Ra, the lady said she was charging the same for her spayed female as her unspayed, said it was to pay for the vet bills. Told her I would pass. |
I think it's strictly a supply and demand thing. More women buy Yorkies than men, and many of us want little girls. We have one of each, but when I was looking for Zoe, I wanted a little girl & would not have bought a male. It's a girly thing!!! :p |
