looking for a yorkie puppy Hi all, I am new to this site and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction. I live in northern California and I am looking for a Yorkie puppy. Breeders around here are asking for $1800 for a male puppy. Is this an average price? I have tried to do a little research online and have come across 2 different breeders in MO that are asking for $550-$700 for a male pup. I don't want to buy from a puppy mill or from someone that doesn't raise good puppies. Has anyone purchased a puppy online before (sounds horrible I know)? What is a reasonable price for a male Yorkie pup? Does anyone know of Northern California breeders? Thanks for your time! |
Welcome to the group. I can't help you as I live on the East Coast but would like to caution you about buying a dog sight unseen from the internet. Many people have been taken that way. Some people will post other peoples' photos on the net as if they are theirs to sell. Some people don't even have dogs to sell and will just take your money. I know many people buy dogs and have them shipped but I think this is very risky. If you can't go and pick it up yourself, maybe you don't have time for a pet. You have to do your research so you know what to look for in a puppy. You always hear how you should see the parents, but that may not help much either. An unscrupulous person could show you any dog and tell you it's the mother or father of the puppy you're interested in. I was lucky as I found my puppy from the second classified ad I called. I went to see her in person and it was love at first site. Her breeder's home was very nice and I wouldn't have minded them adopting me. I did have some prior yorkie experience so I knew what to look for. Good luck in finding the perfect puppy. |
The average price here in El Paso, Texas for a papered male is about $600 to $1000. I think very often if you by online it is either a scam or you will be misinformed. I just bought a puppy online and they said the parents were 2 lbs 3 oz and 3 lbs, well maybe they didn't expect me to drive to pick up the puppy, but the 2 lb. mom was 5 1/2 pounds and the puppy will probably be at least that full grown. Our newspaper is www.elpasotimes.com if you see any you like, call them and if you like what you're hearing I wouldn't mind going to look at them for you. We, generally, always have ads for males. |
I don't know if you saw this thread but this story is a very good example of what can happen when you buy a puppy from the internet. If you are patient, you should be able to find a puppy within driving distance. Even if puppies are more expensive in your area than they are in the midwest, the money you save on vet bills might be worth it: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...722#post500722 |
Chloeandj has a beautiful Yorkie girl and she lives in N. California. Maybe you can contact her for her breeder's info? |
:wavey: Welcome to YT!!!! hmmmmmmm Are you looking for a pet, or a Show/Breed? It all depends on what you are looking for. I would not buy one that you have not seen, know the breeder, or had someone look into it for you. We do have a puppies for sale thread. Did you look there. I think we even have some Breeders up where you are. It's best that you are doing research. I'm sure you will find a furbaby soon. Again, Welcome!!! :) :) :) |
Welcome to YT! :) I'm sure you know this already, but California is the state where everything costs an arm, a leg, and a part of your soul. :p All joking aside, yes $1800 is the average price for a male puppy around here if it's coming from a reputable breeder. I have seen a few for much less in the Sac Bee, but I'm not sure if they're good breeders or not. So one really has to be cautious when you're looking for a lower priced pup. (But there are a lot of reputable breeders out of state who will charge around $1000 for a pet quality male puppy.) I'm buying my yorkie online, but from people who I know are reputable and won't run away with my money. (And who aren't charging $3000 for a pet quality puppy.) I think buying a yorkie online is fine if you know the breeder checks out. I bought my Bichon the same way, but I emailed a lot of the people who bought puppies from the breeder before going ahead and putting down a deposit, and I picked up the puppy myself. I only know of one Yorkie breeder, but she isn't breeding the traits that I am looking for so that's why I'm not getting a pup from her. PM me if you want her contact info. |

Thanks so much for your reply. That would be great if you could check with your breeder. I really appreciate it. I live in San Jose but am willing to travel. Thanks again! |
Welcome to YT. I don't know any breeders in Cali but maybe you can search on the Yorkies for sale or wanted section. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=8 Good luck in your search. |
Welcome to YT! I'm sure that just about everything is more expensive in California. But, the pros...you can to and see what you're getting. Buying over the internet can be a scary thing. I've always heard that one shouldn't buy sight unseen but others have had good luck with this. I guess if you find something on the net, build a relationship with the breeder and hopefully, you'll trust the breeder enough to purchase. |

I live about 1.5 hrs away from you and have been scoping out breeders in CA for future reference. Check out ytca.com. They have breeders listed in each state. I thought I even saw one listed in Pleasanton and San Jose....wait maybe it was ytca.org? try both. |

There is a breeder in Pleasanton. There's also one in Livermore. She charges $1500 - $1700 though. Another breeder in Walnut Grove charges $2000. Too rich for my blood. I'm a little uneasy about answering a classified ad in the paper, but I guess that's my only choice right now seeing as how I can't find any other breeder in my area. Lissy, I'm interested to know about the breeder you found. |
