How do i tell if my yorkie is mixed????? Hello, Can you tell me how to tell if my dog is mixed with something. On his vet papers that came with him it said Yorkie but a few ppl have said that his ears are far to big to be just a yorkie. Can anyone help please??? |
Can you post some pictures? A lot of yorkies have really big ear. Did you get registration papers? Not that having them would mean he wasn't mixed. I guess the only way to tell for sure would be a DNA test. |
Ok I will see what pics I have on this computer (im not at home) and i will post them. thanks for that. |
Some pics of alfie.....any opinions would be great! http://i1.tinypic.com/sc72bn.jpg http://i1.tinypic.com/sc72o8.jpg http://i1.tinypic.com/sc730g.jpg |
LOL Adorable pics. she does have big ears, but still does not mean she's mixed. I see is tail was not docked. Have they quit doing that in the UK? His color does not look like 100% yorkie either. How long have you had him? Do you plan to breed? Do you love him? If you don't plan to breed and you love him. Are the ears that important, other than knowing whether or not you were lied to? What do the rest of you think??? |
i dont know.....i think this is questionable. |
I think he looks like a mix. His ears are bigger than a yorkeis and his coloring is different. |
One of mine has such big ears that I call her a pappyshire terrier (pappion/yorkie). She is a registered yorkie and neither of her parents had big ears and my mother has one of the litter mates (also named Alfie) and his ears aren't big either so you just never know... I agree with the other posts- all that matters is you love him. I think he's a cutie! |
He looks like a Yorkie to me.JMO Yes, his ears are rather big, but at least they are standing up like a Yorkie. He has a lighter coloring than most, but I have seen them that color before. Is it true they never dock tails in the UK? :) He looks like a sweetie. |
hehe. he is very cute. he doesn't fit the yorkie profile 100%,but who cares? it's not his fault :) and I'm sure you still love him for who he is. |
I keep all mine in long coats so the puppy cut doesn't look like a Yorkie to me even on a known full breed dog. The ears do seem a little tall (not necessarily too big) and the coloring seems a little off, but I think he could still be a full Yorkie, but then again maybe not. I wouldn't bet money either way, but Alfie sure is cute all the same. |
Hmm... I was wondering the same thing.. That's a good question to ask I always was wondering how could you tell. I have her registration papers but didn't mail them off yet but her breeder sent me something with a family tree or something of that nature I don't understand but I guess it is to let me know that she is a full bred yorkie not mixed. |
;) Well from the pictures to me he looks like a full bred yorkie lol just his coat is lighter making it easier to see his ears clearerl. Love your baby anyways he's cute to me... Quote:

This is a Yorkie . |
1 Attachment(s) Looks yorkie to me! My Pippa has big ears but as i keep her hair long they dont notice as much. Her tail is docked. Just to clarify some yorkies are docked still in UK but now it is illegal to be done by the breeder and must be done by a registered vet. So i guess thats why we're seeing more long tails in UK as breeders are not wanting to pay vets to dock. |
I definitely think he is all Yorkie. My pup is a Yorkie and yours could be his twin brother. Many many Yorkies have big ears. I've always said that I have to keep an eye on mine outside because if he started flapping his ears, I'm sure he could fly away. And - your pup has a little more narrower nose ---like many Yorkies have ... as does mine. (your cut accentuates this.) **** The only real difference between your little dog and mine is that my little guy has longer hair on his face (which makes him more Yorkie looking than yours). I love the cut you have on your dog - he is really a very handsome little guy - so neat and clean looking. But if you let the hair grow out more on his face (which you definitely do not need to do), I think you'd see a lot more Yorkie in him..... For sure - the size of his ears - is a very common Yorkie trait. You need to cruise around this web site and start looking at all the different Yorkie pictures. You'd be surprised how many have big ears exactly like your little dog has. You just tell people that a lot of Yorkies have "bigger ears" -- and that you are just keeping your little guy cut a lot shorter than a lot of people do. He's certainly a twin to mine.....except mine has more of the scruffy Yorkie look around his face. **** Have to tell you that my sister was over the other day and said, "There's something funny/cute looking about Murphy - his head is too big." I said, "His head isn't too big - it's his ears...he just has big ears." Start looking at pictures here on YorkieTalk. You'll see a hundred Yorkies just like your little dog. --------- We have all said over and over and over again - that no breed can have as many different looks as a little Yorkie can. They come in totally different sizes, different colors, big ears, little ears, floppy ears, erect ears, and a hundred different haircuts that really make them look different.....and they are all Yorkies...amazing!!!!! Have fun - and enjoy your YORKIE!!!!!! Carol Jean |
Albert has big ears and he is so tiny they look huge. but he is a purebreed |

Yes it is true it's actually illegal. It's seen as unethical and unnecessary. We are in the UK and Smudger has a docked tail but he came from Northern Ireland and they still dock tails there :) |
In my opinion this is a yorkie, in fact he looks just like my mums yorkie Meg, same colour, same face very very cute :) :) the front may look lighter than the average yorkie but the the bum looks silver/grey :) |
Again - his coloring is just like a hundred other Yorkies. I told you that mine could be his twin brother - he has the same coloring. And, if you look around, you'll see some that are even lighter in color..... amazing - right? Carol Jean |
The first picture makes him look a little mixed but then i looked at the other two and he looked 100% yorkie. If you wanted to you could ask the breeders for dna testing. That way you would know for sure if it's important to you. I would want to know just for the simple fact to know if I was lied to..I HATE TO BE LIED TO lol hate it hate it hate it.. I think his coat looks like a yorkie..i've seen some yorkies with a coat lighter than that. I think he's adorable myself..and to those that say he isn't tell them your right..he's a full blooded rotti..can't you tell..lol |
I dont know personally if he is mixed, but what i do know ... is he is SOOO ADORABLE :) hugs |
HI! He looks like a adorable PET yorkie tome!!! how old is he? enjoy him & goodluck! |

The last thing in the world I would ever do is any DNA testing or anything like that.....because - who cares??? It shouldn't really matter at all. I am sure he is a little Yorkie. If your little guy isn't a Yorkie - mine isn't either. Shame on everyone for even caring. I think that most of our little Yorkies are Yorkies - even though they can look so different. I don't really think you even care that much -- I think you are just wondering... And, again, I think he is definitely a little Yorkie. Carol Jean |
Thank you! Thanks to everyone that replied. I am now convinced that he is a yorkie! Ok to answer a few questions...... No I do not care at all what breed he is, I love him and thats that but obvioulsy its good to know exacly what you have. Alfie is 5 years old and I have had him for nearly 3 months, although it feels as though he has always been here. I did not get him as a pup obviously. I was looking for a papillion but someone my boyfriend knows said they had a dog that they could not keep cos of where hey lived. So i went to see him (he was called Robbie then!), i took him for a walk, i watched him with people and at the end of the day I said I would have him and i took him to the vets to get checked out. I know it may not be the "normal" way to get a dog, especially as it was not this breed we were after, but thats what happened and luckily it paid off and he is just fanatstic. The tail docking..... I believe that it is illegal in the UK and it is not something that I personally, would want done to my dog as there is no need, in his life, for it to be done. Everyones an individual and I have nothing bad to say about it, just not for me. Thanks again for all the answers! |
Looks like a Yorkie to me....I am in NYC and my Gidget's tail is not docked either. We got her from a breeder when she was very young and decided to keep her tail...We like it better this way...I think her tail is really adorable and makes her cuter! I've read that docking the tail is better for hygiene, but, we have not had any problems with it all... |
