How many of you would consider a yorkie puppy with an undocked tail?

Would you expect them to have a lower price than one with a docked tail if you compare apples to apples?

Just curious how everyone thinks on this subject.

Personally i prefer yorkies with a tail, they have a lovely little tail and it gives them alot more to wag!!! plus you are getting more dog for you money so maybe should be more expensive!! lol ;)

I prefere them without a tail.Iv seen a few yorkies with tails but I cant get used to it..I guess its because nearly all yorkies are docked and I cant imagine them being any other way:rolleyes:

in my opinion a tail adds to the *yorkie cuteness* factor because ya don't see long yorkie tails all that much.

I personally like the docked tail. I think it's cute when Tia wags her little tail, cracks me up :)

I prefer them with a tail. Lucy still has hers and it is so happy and waggy, I cant imagine her without it.

Oreo still has his tail, and i personally LOVE it! because he's always so full of life and it's always wagging!

Ginger's tail was docked when I got her.. If i had the chance, i would have kept it!

i dont think i have a preferance really..... i love toby no matter what, would i have wanted to keep the tail???? i dunno, cant really say.... all i know for sure is: at least with a docked tail he is unable to knock thing over with it and it is one less thing for the twins to tug on :rolleyes:

LOL-funny.

I've had one of each and liked both. The docked one was my little gerbil butt, that's what it reminded me of and what I called him. :p I like when they are so excited they shake their entire back end.

I like the look of the long tail.

I know this is a silly question but being the novice that I am.. what is docked and undocked?
Fred has a little.. mini-tail and when he gets happy it wags and when we pick him up and put him in the air, it goes down and covers his little poopyhole. We think it's so cute!

Sully's tail is docked....it was when we found and bought him. It's so cute....we tell him, ooooh Sully, wag your nub! And he does and we just laugh and mock him by wiggling our pinky finger at him. Gotta love it.

But I would love to know how long yorkies tails get - are they straight or curly or what? I have no idea!

They are quite long,straight (they hold it in the air) and the fur fans out like a fan.A friend of mine on another forum has two babies with un-docked tails and the fur on them is very long and it looks like a plam tree when they hold it over their backs:)

Hi Gina!! Yeah - I have Gypsy Rose and Gizzzie Chavi and both of my "angels" (I use that term loosely!) have long tails! As Gina said they carry theirs tails like a little palm tree at times. I am attempting to post another pic here of them both but I have never managed to do this on this forum so please don't hold your breath!!
More and more tails are remaining undocked here in UK. We chose to buy our girls like this but our two previous wonderful yorkies had docked tails and we loved them too!! Here goes with the photo:-

I like an undocked tail because it is cute and because I hate to think of the pain these little babies go through when it's docked, all for someone else's idea of what "looks" better, i.e., the breed standard. Docking is illegal in a lot of countries and considered animal cruelty.

It is not my intention to offend anyone, especially the wonderful breeders on this forum that I respect greatly, but I know that the Biewer Yorkie in Germany has an undocked tail because a docked tail is against the breed standard there. There is some controversy over that here I think. Not sure. maybe Yorkie Rose could elaborate. She is way more knowledgeable than me on this.

I took Hefner to a yorkie playgroup here yesterday and there were several dogs with undocked tails and they are very pretty. I was ignorant about this whole tail docking issue until reading about Biewers and both my puppies have docked tails. Chai barely has anything!! I think a lot of people don't realize the tails are docked when the babies are a couple of days old. They just think it happens that way naturally, i.e, they have short tails. I would love to learn more if anyone has a good resource on this subject.

Well, you can't show a yorkie with an undocked tail (well, I guess you could, but you wouldn't win anything) so I had to have a pup with a docked tail. As far as a pet goes, if I were to get a yorkie for a pet, I'd leave it undocked. I wouldn't want the babies to feel more pain than need be.

Chelsey is our first yorkie with an UNdocked tail, before we got her i thought ide never get used to it, but now that we have her its cuter all the way, the tip of her tail touches her back curls right up, its easy to see what her mood is, if she drops her tail she looks ( confused or unsure )... if i get a good pic of her standing ill post one, there is one of her in the galay, but shes not standing there :D

Im not sure that you wouldn't win anything, I was watching Crufts a couple of weeks ago and the comentators were talking on this issue, apparently it is the carrage of the tail that they look for, not that the tail is docked. I guess most of the dogs in the past had docked tails as they were much seen as working dogs. Whether they win or not docked or undocked I guess is down to the judge's personal opinion! :animal-sm

i like my guys with docked tails one were always steping on the cats tails forget it if brownie and kayko had tail there always behind us lol

Yea, that's what I meant. This debate is going on about mini - schnauzer's as well in another forum that I visit. It's just not possible, right now anyways, to place a dog that has a tail, in which the breed standard states:

"Docked to a medium length and carried slightly higher than the level of the back." :(

Our Magic has an undocked tail and she is just precious when she wags her tail. We can always tell when Magic is excited about something as her tail wags faster and faster!
Our Sailor has a docked tail and we are just beginning to see her try to wag her tail....but you have to watch closely or you miss it!
We love them both the way they are and would not change anything.....it just seems if they have a longer tail it allows them another way to communicate! :animal-sm

I have six new puppies that I am supposed to take to the vet tomorrow and have their tales docked and I have mixed feelings about it. My Bentley has his docked and it's the cutest, and my Bitsy doesn't have hers docked and it's the most beautiful tail I've ever seen and she carries it so prissy I cannot imagine her with a docked tail :) I'm torn! I'll try and get a good picture of Bitsy standing up tomorrow so you can see it. I don't think you can see it on the pics I posted cause she was laying down nursing her pups. I do hate the thought of having my pups tales cut on though!! Breed standard or not:( It's probably going to hurt! I wonder if people will want them if they aren't dock?!?

Taildocking is a very controverial subject and the internet has lots of info if you want to learn more. My personal opinion would be not to dock the tails unless you intend to show the dog. Here is a link for more info:

I actually went in with the vet when she cut our puppies tails and honestly, they did not seem to feel anything. I was nervous about it until then, now I always have their tails docked. :animal-sm

Do you guys have any pictures of docked versus undocked tails?

Fred has a little stub that he wiggles and I think it's the CUTEST thing ever! Would that be docked or undocked? :rolleyes:

i think that little nub is too cute waggin a 100mph but if i were looking for a puppy and the one i found had an undocked tail i wouldn't care

I cant say if Ive ever seen a Yorkie with a tail before it was docked?? :confused: Does anyone have a picture they could post?? I would like to see it.

They (scientists and doctors) say that a newborn puppy cannot feel pain so that might change some people's views on tail docking if it's done within the first few days of life.

I wish i could go back in time and have Mojo's tail undocked!! It is just so cute...my cousin has a yorkie with a full tail and it is just so cute...my next yorkie will have a full undocked tail!!

I would say I would prefer the docked tail. Although I have not had a pup any other way, but when I look for a puppy I am looking for the breed standard. (I plan to show my dogs)I would keep a yorkie with an undocked tail if it was one less expensive or 2 given to me as a pet. However I am not going to pay the kind of money I did for a dog that cannot quailfy for a championship. I do not believe that docking the tail is as bad as some say. I have dobermans as well and they to are docked, it is done so early and if you find a good vet or breeder that knows what they are doing it can not only be low pain, but blood free.
