Smarter Than You Think Has anyone else read this book called "Smarter than you think?" It says things about they way you feed your dogs. I asked my friend about it, and because of the book she now feeds her Boston Terrier whatever they eat. So sometimes in the morning she will feed them eggs, rice and steamed veggies. Other times she will feed them some chicken breast or fish with steamed veggies and rice. Basically, whatever they have to eat she gives the same thing to her dog. If you have read this book, what do you think about it? James |
VERY interesting. I don't know that I would follow the book. You could end up with other health problems from an overweight dog...sounds interesting, though! |
My opinion is, if were suppose to feed are dogs what we eat, then why do they make dog food? They need special vitamins thats comes in the dog food, so I would not feed my baby what I eat, she is on RC for yorkies and soft Eukanuba food and I think she is and looks wonderful! |
You see I thought the same thing. Aren't their vitamins and nutrients in dog food? But in the book he goes on to say that they get all the nutrients they need if we fed them a healthy balance diet of "people food" and that we are conditioned in a way to believe that dry dog food is better for them. Why is it that dogs don't like to eat dry food? Do they eat it because they like it? or do they eat it to survive, cuz that's the only food they get? I'm thinking that the book is very controversial, but from what I have seen from my friends dog, he loves his dinner and he has not had a problem. Of course you would have to manage what he eats and measure it. Let me ask you a question, would be happy eating dry "people food" for the rest of your life? I have started my dogs on this diet starting today. I think it will be better for them. James |
Yorkies and probably other dogs too need a lot of protein, so I don't buy into this feeding regime. Mine do like green beans and apples, but I use as a treat only, otherwise they will not eat their dog food. When their tummies are upset, boiled white rice and boiled chicken is the food of choise for mine. |

My dogs basically eat this way in the evenings. In the morning, they have a small amount of wet dog food - and have IAMs dry food left out all day (while I'm gone - which they almost never eat). When I'm home in the evening - they eat a lot of the same foods I eat - healthy food! With all the huff and puff and complaining and worrying about all the different dog foods that are out there - I am positive that the healthy people food my dogs eat is better than any dog food I could buy. They get no "junk food." I agree about keeping your eye on your dog's weight - regardless of what they eat. And we should also always keep an eye on their sense of well being - are they energetic, playful, happy, etc. Carol Jean |
About 4 months ago our Katy took herself off of her wet dog food. I tried all different kinds before giving up. Since she liked her dry food I didn't worry about it. I went on a trip recently. My husband was in charge. He decided that it was easier to cook for both of them and started her on some people food. She now eats both. She has her dry in the morning and a small serving our our people food at night. |
That's what I have started doing. I feed them a little bit of dry food mixed with people food. Last night my babies all feasted on a littel dry food with some rice, some steamed vegetables and I cut up some pork. Before they would not eat the dry food unless they absultely had to, now they love what they are getting. Of course we watch what we give them, we don't want to over feed them and we want to make sure what they are eating is healthy. I thought this would be an extra chore, but it hasn't...I just make a little bit more than usual for dinner and if I make something spicey, I make them a non spicey version of what I'm eating. I haven't read the book, but I have to say that Loki has yet to get bored of his Canidae. He gets breakfast and dinner and gobbles it up. This is because we've never let him hold out for people food. (Besides, it smells funky so I'm sure it tastes good to him!) Once in a while he gets a bite of egg or cheese, and he gets chicken as a treat and rice if he's sick. His favorite things to steal are potatoes and green beans, because that's what I usually drop. He has a very sensitive stomach, as many yorkies do, and too many varied foods would be bad. I'm all for cooking if the only alternatives are the nasty grocery store brand dog foods, but Loki is on top quality food which he happily eats. So, we're OK for now. But I'll check out that book just for fun. |
That's the thing...why is it that vets say to give them rice when their sick or vegetables or some chicken, but only when their sick. If it's suppose to bad for them, why feed it to them when they are sick? Things that make you go hmmmmmmmm. Everyone should read this book...it's an easy read and moves pretty well. James |

If you feed only chicken they do not get all the nutrients they need, but it is easy on their stomach when they are sick. |
I feed them a variety of things...but it always involves a kind of meat like chicken or pork or fish, steamed vegetables and rice. Of course all of this is combined with some of their dry food. I'm still trying it out and see how it works for them. So far I like it. We usually feed them what we are having, and we generally eat very healthy. |

Kobe has rice everyday. It is in his food. If I do not give him his special food then I either make rice or oats for him. He has it twice a day and never has a problem going potty. When he has his finicky spell and won't eat his regular food. I make him oatmeal or rice and mix with it pumpkin, cottage cheese or plain yogurt, and shredded chicken breast. |
