Picking out a puppy OMG, I am so confused right now!!! I wake up and just got an email from my breeder. She tells me that the person in front of me for females has just backed out of the contract and now I have first pick of the females! Now, I've been focusing on the other dog that didn't get picked first and just assumed, well this is my dog, this is Adrianna. But now I get a chance to look at the other dog as well. I'm going down there on Saturday to visit the pups. Please give me some hints/tips to look for in chosing a pup at the breeders. I am now so confused....instead of just going there and the breeder giving me the second female...now I have to choose between two?!? |
2 Attachment(s) Here are pics of the two I have to decide between..... |
Awwwww How could you pick one?? They are both adorable! Bren |
If I had to pick, I will pick the first one. Something about her cute little face that says "take me home with you". If I did not have to pick, I would take them both. They are both adorable! |
that a hard one... i couldnt pick... thank god i didnt have to choose with lexi. she was the only one in the place, i had no choice... they are both so so cute. which ever one you choose will be the right one for you. |

I know girl, I wish I could take both as well! :D They're just toooo cute. Arghh....we'll see what happens tomorrow. :( |
OMG..... I flipped back and forth between the pics. about 10 times.... I can't choose which one. It'll probly come down to which one pulls on your heart strings the most. I say the most b/c you know you be wanting to take them both home.... They're so adorable.... Your so lucky, Good Luck in trying to choose jsut one LOL Crystal |
They are both adorable, My opinion the 1st one has a little more coat and I think I would base it on personalities when you go visit. Any way you could get both! I wish I had gotten two at once. Keep us posted can't wait to see whih one is your little girl! |
I think they are both cute. I am not one to offer any advice because I got TWO! We couldn't leave one behind! But it is great having two :D |
This is very, very easy! Take them both!!! |
I like the looks of the one in the second picture. |
Ok, knowing what I know now this is what I would look for: 1. Coat - silky or cottony. If both puppies have the same coat, then cross that off the list. But I would put a check mark on the silky coated puppy because this is the easiest type to maintain. 2. Are the puppies legs shorter in the front? if they are, there is a possibility of roach back (small hump to the back). You want to make sure the back is a straight line when standing on all fours and being still. 3. Ears - are they in the beginning stages of being upright. (the 2nd pictured puppy looks like it ears are on the way up). If this is an issue you do need to look at the parents too, to make sure their ears are upright. 4. Fur curly or straight? Straight is the most perferred, but it's your choice. 5. Personality - you want one that is in the middle. Not to hyper and not too shy. Now having told you all the above, my Millie has a cottony curly coat, has a very small roach to her back, her ears are up, and has an adorable personality, but can be cranky at times. But I wouldn't trade her for the world....why? Because she is quite intelligent, has been successfully 100% housebroken and is trainable in many ways. She was never a chewer (none of my belongings or furniture are damaged because of her), she was able to stay in a crate for up to 9 hours and never messed in it, was able to stay in an x-pen for up to 9 hours and never messed in it, she is not a barker (she will, but not incessantly), has free range of house while we are at work (for up to 9 hours) and she is a good little puppy and does not mess up anything and she has had this freedom since she was 10 months old, will come when called, is the perfect size of 4.5 to 5 lbs and is the love of our lives! I could not have discerned any of these traits just looking at her or observing her for any lenght of time. My husband picked her out of 2 litters and as far as I am concerned he did a great job! So you can go for looks, or go with your heart and hope to goodness you get a good one! |
Tough decision. You sure you can't take both. They both look so cute. |
Oh, this has to be so hard for you! At least you have plenty of time to make up your mind. If they both have the same features, I would spend some time with the two and see which one picks you. When it came to picking my girl, I had first pick too. Ginger was much bigger than her sister but so much cuter, but still, I wanted a smaller yorkie. After hanging out with the two for a while and watching them play, Ginger came up and laid down on my foot. That was all the sign I needed—that was my girl. That was probably the best decision I’ve ever made. Good luck and congratulations on your new puppy! |
Oh this is just too hard. I would go play with them & pick the one who steals your heart. Good Luck to you!!! Don't forget to take pictures when you go :D :D :D :D |
I really don't believe I could pick just one. They are both so cute!!! May the force be with you as you make your final decision. Okay, that made me sound like such a dork...really, I'm not! LOL |
It really is tough to pick from two adorable yorkies . . . and at that stage, they are soooooo irresistible. I suggest that you let the puppy pick you instead and whomever comes to you first and smother you with kisses is the ONE to take home . . . you can never go wrong with that! Best of luck! |
Thank you, thank you for all your great advice! Unfortunately, I cannot take both girls...the other one is reserved already! Ladylavender~thanks for the great information, I'll definitely keep it in mind on Saturday. And of COURSE I'm taking pics! If I don't, I know I'll get banished to the YT hall of shame!!!! |
Although both are cute and id take either if offered to me if i had choice i would have pup no 2 :D |
I also had 2 girls to choose from, but one kept coming to me and the other one wasn't friendly. The breeder says sometimes they choose you and I think she was right. Xena is precious. I've had her 3 weeks. I'm glad she choose me. |
Awww what a tough decision you have to make! I say when you get there see which one pulls on your heart the most! My guess is that they are both going to pull on your heart but if I had to choose just one I think that the 2nd picture would be my choice! |
Decisions decisions I know it's pretty tough to decide between the two - I got lucky picking mine because one of them looks like Charlie and one looks like Gia and Charlie is my favorite :-) Just based on the pictures, I'm partial to the one on the right but I really like that "scruffy" look - so it's hard to say - good luck though!!! |
Since you can't have both, I would let the puppy choose you. That's what I have done in the past and it has worked well for me. Now, if both of them choose you, I don't know what to tell you. I have always had one puppy really monkey shine for me and it makes it easy. These little guys are good at picking their owner. Good luck and hopefully your decision will be easy. Judy |

Are you going to be able to meet them ? I looked at 3 females when searching for Cheri and she picked me....I would really have a hard time choosing just by the pictures....they're just adorable and GOOD LUCK ! PS...your avatar mesmerized me. Is he for sale too ? :D |
I do not allow people to 'pick' their pup, but instead personality test pups and try to match them to the home that will suit them the best. If you are looking for an alpha type, strong willed personality, then that is most likely what you will get if you allow the pup to pick you. The litter alpha will generally be the most curious and extroverted, also the toughest to train. |
TOUGH choice!! I got nothing..all I can say is GOOD LUCK and I can't wait to see pictures ;) |
ears i am a huge fan of erect ears so I would pick the second one. her ears look smaller and are on the way up. the first puppy has larger, heavier looking ears to me and they might not come up at all. But, other than that, they are both dollbabies. |
I bought my Tootie sight-unseen, except for photos. I had someone else go and get him for me because I couldnt make the trip. He is nothing like I expected. He is a whopping 11 pounds, has down ears and he is the CUTEST thing ever! He has brought so much fun into my home. I have 3 other dogs and he brightens everyone's day... besides, he is the only one my husband really likes.. HAHA I think it always works out for the best... .personality is the key! d |
