Spaying?
 
Hi, I keep forgetting to ask the vet this, but around what time do yorkies go into heat? I really hate the thought of having to get her spayed, do they handle it ok? She seems too little and delicate to have surgery. Oh, by the way, she's 6 months.

She could go into heat at any time now. I just got my little girl spayed last week & she's 6 months old. She did great! :)

I can't believe it could be any day now! Such a big surgery for a little puppy.

The breeder I got my Yorkie from and my vet both said to get my baby spayed at 6 months (one more month to go). They go into heat at around 6 months and it is best to get them spayed before their first heat.

I JUST got Baby spayed on Thursday. She looked pitiful when she came home, but she's doing great!! She still has staples in now, but will be removed in a week or so. She's back to her old self now. She still is wearing a collar so she doesn't lick the wounds. Good luck! Oh, BTW, Baby is six months old and didn't go into heat before she was spayed.

Your welcome! They are tough little guys & do very well! :) I just made sure & get the pre-op blood work done before the surgery & that made me feel so much better.

Every particular female is different. She could come into heat any time now or she could be one who doesn't come in until later like 9 months or even a year. :thumbup:

I got the pre-op bloodwork too. Plus IV, antibiotic injection, anesthesia, and laser surgery. I told the vet...do whatever you have to do to make sure that Baby is okay. So he did!! It cost $390 for everything plus teeth extraction and nail clipping. I'm not sure it that's too much, too little, or just right. But you know what? My furbaby is okay, so that's all I care about! :D

What would the blood work be for? Also do you guys know if it's just as good to get her spayed at the humane society? They charge half of what the vet does, and I keep wondering if they take more care at the vet to make sure she's comfortable, or if they just hike up the price because they can?

I think the bloodwork is to check their liver to see if it can handle the surgery. Also, I don't know about the ASPCA. I never dealt with them. I think my vet did everything to make Baby comfortable. They even called yesterday to make sure she was doing okay. :) If you really want to get your Yorkie spayed with the ASPCA, ask them if they deal with toy breeds. You know?

I don't know about the humane society. They do alot of spaying & neutering there, but I don't think I would take my dog there. I just feel more comfortable taking her to our vet. I'm not saying they won't do a good job, that's just my opinion. :)

The price is going to be different in different areas of the country. I'm in Kansas & I paid $170 for Lucy to be spayed, pre-op bloodwork, 2 teeth pulled, microchipped, tattooed, & the anesthesia. You can just call around to get some quotes.

$170, wow! If you know how much I paid for my house in Jersey, you'd probably have a heart attack. I know I will when I get the first mortgage bill! :eek:
