Getting two dogs in once?
 

I am just gonna ask about what you guys think...

What do you think about someone like me who has never had a yorkie to get two yorkies at the same time or around same time. (One older 4-5 yrs old, and the other is a pup.) ?

Have any of you gotten two dogs together?????

We have two Yorkies but they were bought separately. We had the older one for 10-1/2 years and then got Missy at 8 weeks in December.

I think it would be a little much trying to housebreak a puppy and do training on two dogs at the same time. That's just my opinion.

I have placed an entire litter of 3 boys into the best loving home. And it's been a success, so much infact that they have adopted 2 more Yorkies from me..lolol. Now they've always had Yorkies but the challenge is the same regardless..lolol.

I have another family that has never had a Yorkie, adopt one and then a couple months later adopt another puppy. They have never had dogs before.

Either family would be a great resource. They are very much into their Yorkies. They would be happy to talk to you and answer any questions.

My advise is if you are up for the challenge go for it! You have clearly show how repsonsible you are by joining a Yorkie forum and not buying impulsively. that speaks volumes about you.

I think bringing two puppies home together is a wonderful idea! Several weeks after my Wimbley died, I got Kenzy. But, I didn't want him to be lonely while I was at work as I felt VERY guilty about Wim being alone so I got Paddy three weeks later. They have grown up together and ADORE each other...and are now parents together of the 3 newbies (who are one week old now! yea!) :D

Granted, it may have worked in our case because Kenzy is the more docile of the pair - perhaps if Paddy had three weeks to make her mark then she wouldn't have been as accepting of him. Not sure! But, they love to be in their kennel together, whether the door is open or locked. There was really no issue with the dual training, because if you are training one then you can train the other right along with them. So I say go for it!! :thumbup: :thumbup:

I would get 2. I think in some ways it would be easier. The only thing is the initial expense and the potential vet bills.

I got my 2 new babies at the same time, it is a lot of work.....especially when you have one with health problems........(ugh)! I am a fanatic on cleanliness too, so that mop is the first thing I grab these days, even before my coffee and that is a big change. I just take the babies out of their utlity room area, put them in their play pen with a peanut butter chewy while I take care of biz......it makes me feel better to have a clean start to my day and theirs! They are piddle pad trained, and that was a breeze with both of them. I think it has been a little tuff on my 7 year old yorkie, bringing 2 new ones into "his" house....but we still have plenty of laughs around here through it all.......go for it! If I could I would have a house full of them! For now 3 is all my husband will let me have.........shucks!

I do not recommend 2 puppies or dogs at the same time unless the woners are home all the time. Or at least one stay-at-home parent.. I say, get your feet wet with one and then add the second one. I personally do not sell 2 puppies from the same litter to a person...when one starts getting sick or dies, the other follows fairly quickly. The woman who writes the pet column for our paper said the same thing when her 2 brother Shelties got sick and died in 2 months of each other.
The opposite side is that you will have them together for several years and enjoy them before you have to face any of the problems I mentioned. My biggest peice of advice is to make sure that soemone is home all day with the new members...To me, that is very important..

I just adopted two puppies that are three days apart. A male and a female. I would say for the most part it has been wonderful. They never cry when I have them gated in my laundry room...or if they are in their crate at night. I think they made an easier transition to their new home together. Plus, when I need to get things done around the house they have each other to keep them company.

Also, I am glad to have two because I think my family would get into an all out brawl if we only had one to play with ;)

We are training them to go potty outside...and I had to start taking them separately because they just play together if I don't. It takes up a little more time...but they are worth it! :D

I got Andy and Barney at the same time they were full brothers and we couldn't seperate them, so we got both! Yes for me it was a lot of work having 2 pups at the same time but very well worth it. Maybe since one is older for you the housebreaking part won't be too much of an ordeal. It always seems like when one is ready to go out the other isn't :eek: But I would do it all over again...

Oh and I forgot...we got pet insurance just in case! You get a discount for the second dog in most cases and the insurance we picked covers everything they could possibly encounter in their first year of life. This way we don't have any hesitation taking them to the vet even for the slightest sniffle...office visits are 100% covered!

I got Mac and Mellie 6 months apart. Although I would have loved 2 at once, I thought it was better to get them a little bit apart. I was able to dedicate time to each seperately for training, etc. Mac was more independent when Mellie arrive and quickly took over the role as Big Brother. JMO..

and we love it! :luvu: I know they say double the trouble and double the fun. :rolleyes: It was the best decision for us and we are VERY happy about it. We got them at the same time and it worked out perfectly. We have NEVER owned Yorkies before or small dogs in general however that was not an issue at anytime. They are 6 months now and we love them so very much. Only thing I would suggest is making sure you have the energy for two because they LOVE to play... ;)

Yes, that is a good point to bring up. I am the stay at home mom, no way would I do it otherwise. They are just like children, you have to watch them like you would a toddler. When I have had to take the little boy to the vet for all his problems, my girl and 7 year old are there waiting and so excited when we get home. They love each other and it brings joy to us all to be together. :thumbup:

I bought a boy and a week later I bought tasha. Ty died and I almost lost tasha in the process. She almost mourned herself to death. It took almost a year before she completely came out of it. She quit playing and just layed around. When I bought Jersey it helped some but she still went through alot.
Also in my opinion when you get one yorkie (or any pet for that matter) at a time it gives them time to bond to you and your family.
BUT it does help in other areas. It helps ease their lonliness at night when they are crated and helps when you have to go somwhere.
I think you are going to find good and bad in getting two at the same time...
I would say if you want two then get two..whichever decision you make I don't think you will regret..

I've had Jersey since she was a puppy, she's almost one year old now. We are going to check on another Yorkie this Sunday. My husband has a Mini Schnauzer that I bought him for Christmas, I hope eveyone can get along.

I feel guilty about getting another dog because Stewie has been a spoiled only child forever. If I would have gotten two at the same time, that problem would have never existed.

I have 2 that I got 1 month apart but they were both puppies! It was the best decision that I ever made! Having 2 is so much easier than having one! The only problem I think would be the potty training that would be tough with 2 at the same time! Good luck in your decision I'm sure that which ever one you make will be a good one!

I have a Jersey too.. It's not often I hear that name. I love the sound of it though..

We have three furbabies. Princess is the only Yorkie,
They all play together, I think if you can get two Yorkies, go for it,
just make sure you have plenty of free time to give them. :2hearts2:

Both of mine were pups and I got them 1 month apart from each other. They adjusted to each other easily and I didnt have any sibling rivalry.

Thank you so much for all your feedback. I don't think I would get two dogs since I want to be really responsible. That is true that vet bills might become twice more too... I just thought I would throw the question to you as I hold onto myself not to jump on making a decision without any consideration. It is really hard when you have been waiting for long time and now having options of taking an older dog or a pup... But then I want to be a responsible owner...

Sounds good to me - you could train them both at once and they will be great company for each other. Go for it!

Ya the older one I was talking about is about 4 yr old and I think she is all trained. I was thinking that maybe pup can learn from a big sister too... But I think I have to make a decision.... which one i should get. Older one or a new born pup.

My two (before the 3 newborn puppies) were in their kennel all day together as I do not have a situation where I can stay home with them during the work day. That is exactly why I got two pups at the same time, and from 12 weeks to 4 1/2 years, two have been WONDERFUL! :) Extra work? absolutely Extra financial strain? you bet One sick, both sick, me sick? at times, yes -- But if you are in a position to meet the needs of two then, please know that, in my experience, two flourish together - even if home alone during the week.

I am a stay at home mom..BUT I don't think you shouldn't get a puppy just cause you can't stay at home. There are lots of moms that have to work these days..I'm lucky that I don't have to..but you wouldn't put off having a child because you have a career or a job so why should you have to if you adopt a furbaby. That is why they have crates..for people that have to leave home. I don't think it makes you a bad yorkie owner just because you have to work to make a living for yourself. I beleive people have different ways in how they are a pet owner. As long as the pet is taken care of it doesn't make you a bad owner because you don't see it the way others do. We all parent our children different and we all care for our yorkies different.
I hope I don't offend anyone with my opinion and it isn't my intention to start a big ol debate. I do think getting two yorkies is a WONDERFUL idea exspecially if you have to work. For me I would at least wait a few weeks in between buying two but just because it gives you time to bond and the pet time to bond to you. Sometimes if you buy two at the same time..those two pets can bond more to each other. But if thats what someone wants to do it doesn't make them a bad pet owner. As far as expenses..if you love something you find a way to pay for their care. I couldn't afford to have kids when I did..but i found a way and nearing the end of their childhood..i look back and realize that we had a tough beginning but in the end I gave them all they needed and a whole lot of what they wanted.

Michiko - I think it would be wonderful if you get the older one. Seems like everyone wants a puppy and sometimes the older ones get left behind.

Four years old is still young for a little Yorkie. It's probably a wonderful little dog, and you could get your second dog, a little puppy, any time you are ready.
