Hyper??? I was jsut wondering how many of you have calm dogs? I know 2 people that have yorkies and they are just about as wild as they can be! My baby isn't hyper. I mean he sounds off when he hears strange noises and loved to play. BUT we have to be playing with him and if we aren't then he wants to be curled up next to us. He has his moments tho. When I come home he goes ape %$#@ ! LOL Eventually he will calm down. If someone comes over he still isn't what I call hyper but jsut a little excited. We have a shepherd and a spaniel in the house. As I am sitting here typing they are over there playing.(the shepherd and my little man) I guess I am just really wondering if this is the norm? |
your lucky your pups are calm... lexi is a crazy girl... she dont sit still for one minute... i can never get anything done cause she is right up my tushie. if she is relaxing on the couch, the minute i get up, there she is following me. whenever someone comes over, she jumps all over them... she just wants to be loved like everyone else... shes my dream come true.. |
Gidget is very hyper. Everytime she hears a door squeak she is there to see what is going on and if someone is leaving her! :p She is running around ALL the time! Chloe is the same as yours. She plays when played with and she plays with Gidget a pretty good bit! But any other time she wants in my lap! And I definitely don't mind because Gidget is hardly ever just wanting in my lap! :D |
Dezi is really really hyper. When I get home, she goes crazy and starts running around and she keeps kissing me and kissing me. Once she is calm, then she wants to play and bite. Biting is a little annoying, but I am working on it. I give her other toys to bite on, but she loves to bite my fingers. At about 8:30 she sits to watch tv with us and she wants to be rubbed and pampered and at about 9:30 or 10:00 when I think she is tired, I head to the bedroom (she sleeps in my room, not in my bed (Yet)), she starts acting crazy again. LOL. As soon as the lights go out, she is asleep. :animal-pa |
Vivi loves to snuggle and cuddle. She will play with her toys and she loves to go for walks but overall, I would say she is very calm. She also loves to play with other dogs. :) |
calm? CALM? Twinkie doesn't know the meaning of the word calm! She's always all over the place, espcially ofr walks, car rides, when someone comes over, when one of gets home, letting her out of her kennel...etc. She only know how to be calm at night when she's sleeping! |
Yeah thats one thing I hate. Diesel follows me from room to room. I only hate it because I know his legs must get tired. I am glad to see at least a few others have calm dogs. I was beginning to wonder if something was off wiht mine! LOL I actually love the way he is. I love being able to cuddle with him. So I will quit worrying so much and just enjoy it all. |
snickers is my crazy puppy... everyone that has seen her says she is totally nuts lol and we love her... but calm is never-ever a word that could be used to describe her so i wouldnt worry too much... i think i posted awhile back on this issue asking a similar question and everyone made me aware that thier little ones are hyper too :) |
here is the link... lol the title of my thread was are any other yorkies super-hyper lol http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32341 |
My mom will say, hyper = healthy :D |
My little Zeus is a crazy man!!! But, then there are the times when he'll just curl up on the couch with me. Love my baby!! :p |
IF hyper is healthy does that mean I should keep an eye on him ? |
Calm???? I don't think Pricess knows how to be calm, unless she's sleeping. :) :) :) |
I think it is only a problem if he was really hyper and then changed to calm. I was looking for a calm dog and asked for one....Don't misunderstand...she still runs around the house and follows me like a shadow and plays with her toys. She is very social and loves to ride in the car and meet new people. There is a difference in calm and lethargic. I had two Goldens....the really calm one, we called him Eyore...lived to be 13 years old(old for a big dog) and the hyper one died of cancer at 9. Vivi has never been much of a barker unless food is an issue. She has a great appetite. Her behavior is consistant and that is the key :) |
Maddie is definitely in the "hyper" category. It's funny how 2 dogs from the same litter can be so different. My daughter has Maddie's brother, Kirby, and he is so layed back and calm. Maddie will lay down to rest at times, like now...she is beside me on the floor catching a quick nap...but...as soon as I get up, she'll bounce up and look around for a toy so we can play. It's like..."Play with me...play with me...play with me NOW!" She cracks me up! She goes wild when we get company and gets so excited when we're going somewhere. Except for her little cat naps, she doesn't sit still for a minute! |
Hehehe! Stomper is now almost a year and a half and he is still sooooooo HYPER! :D |
Oscar is VERY hyoer...but not as bad as he used to be. At least we can correct him now and he will calm down...sometimes! He is wide open most of the time. When people come over there is no helping him! He loves everybody! He loves to play and demands you play with him...but we have learned to turn that off now when enough is enough. Then he plays with himself...he really needs a brother...If I could only convince hubby! Maybe someday. This weekend he is going to stay with a friend of ours for a few days while we go to Texas and she has a Bichon named Harley who he LOVES to play with! He is gonna have a good time!!! |
Dogs have different personalities. My Yorkie is quite laid back (and not a barker) most of the time. But, if he ever has the opportunity to play - when company, children, or other animals come over - he goes crazy!!!! He can play until he's exhausted with my other dog - or sit by me and watch television all evening. I did learn from the breeder that my dog's mother is very laid back and easy going --and his father is a hyper little barker..... Looks like my dog takes more after his mother than he does his father. Carol Jean |
Mine is the very same way.He can play rough and hard when he wants to. Now like yours his mom was also laid back. He has been like this since day one. Even as a pup he was really quiet.I hvae often wondered if it was how I treated him when he was little. I am a SAHM and he was ALWAYS being held when he slept. Thanks for all the replys. |
One is one isn't Dreama is so calm and regal. She is indeed the queen of the house. Wosie on the other hand is a HANDFUL!! Hyper? Oh yeah baby! My son says that holding on to Wosie is like trying to hold a ferret that just swallowed a gyroscope!! LOLOL :D |
Gracie for the most part is calm. I'm sure I'll get shot for this but she has been on Clomacalm for almost a year now. (She is not on it due to hyperness, she is on it for other reasons) She likes sleeping during the day and she usually will only get hyper if I make her hyper... she was like that even before the med's... But she does like to bark..... |
Now my Pippi-dip is a hyper lil thing at night when I get home. She has taken to looking out the window on weekends and barks at stuff. Then she goes nuts because she wants to go outside soooo badly. :) She can be really calm at times though. We have noticed since her hysterectomy, she is a lil more hyper. The only thing that really concerns me about her behavior is how she treats our 10-year-old cat. She literally attacks the cat, jumps on his back, bites his ears HARD, and just in general makes life hard for the cat! I have yet to find a real way to stop her of this. I think part of it is jealousy, part is getting attention, and part of it is just plain orneriness. |
my last litter was two girls. completely different. The one i kept was wiggling her tail before she could walk. She throws a fit at night when i put her in her crate. The other one was so quiet and well behaved. I like the routy one. She is just like her mommy Sugar. She wants attention when she wants it. a little stinker |
Heres a funny story for ya! I came home from work about a week after we brought pixie home and my dear husband announced that Pixie was not a purebred. I laughed and corrected him and said of course she was purebred. He shook his head and as serious as ever said "no, sweetheart, I am sorry to tell you, she is not". I stood there dumbfounded. I then challenged him with "well if she is a half breed, what the heck is she mixed with? and he looked down at the dog and looked up at me and said "Al Qaeda"......and he paused ...."she's a terrorist". I burst out laughing and scooped up Pixie and then Brian spent the next 30 minutes telling me about the terror Pixie had put him through that day! I wouldn't have it any other way! She's a handful, but thats what makes her so much fun and gives her such an amazing personality! |

I think Rowdy would be classified as calm - he gets very exicted when we come home - but he playes quietly or sits beside my hubby most of the time. Of course, that may all change now that we have a brother - Rex and they are beginning to play. We'll see - but I do think Rowdy is very calm for a little dog. I also think his mom and dad were pretty calm too - the breeder has 6 Yorkies  but only one unfixed male and female. They are all just about as calm as can be when we go over there. So, I think that Rowdy comes from calm stock. I guess we named him incorrectly! :D We didn't choose Rowdy though, because he was overly active - we just liked the name. |
I love this thread, because now I know that Zoe is NORMAL!! She is all over the place hyper all the time... she does calm down to chew on things and sleep in my lap though. I think these dogs would do great in agility! :) |
When I posted this thread I was looking for other Yorkie moms that have calm dogs. I guess there aren't many of us out there. Reading what so many of you all have said my baby isn't Healthy or normal. When I say calm I don't mean lethargic and I don't mean depressed. He eats good and loves to play he just doesn't like to play all day long. He is housebroken and has been since he was 5 months. So I have no complaints at all. He also gets me up in the A.M. to go out. I really don't think what is normal for one is always normal for another. Personally I prefer to have him the way he is. It would drive me insane to watch him run around all day long. |
