Yorkies sure can talk Does anyone have any suggestions on how to stop a yorkie from barking? Zoe just won't shut up. He barks for attention, he barks when he plays, he just barks all the time. I tried holding his snout and that did not work. I hate to say this but I'm about to resort to lightly smacking his snout. **side note: he is soooooo cute I can't stand it! Don't you ever want to just eat them up? I can't stop kissing and huggin Zoe despite his yakker!! |
You know you can't play when they bark for play, etc. Make him stop barking only. Then play. Some people use pennies in a can. I have used spray bottles of water for training (or reverse training - after we have allowed bad behavior to begin). I also use the sound 'sshhhht!' I learned it on 'The Dog Whisperer', that is a great show Cesar Milan is a dog behaviorist. It is nice and quiet, and they seem to pick up on it amazingly fast. |

It is at the point now that I just have to say "No Barking" and she stops, except for if the garage door is opening, there is a cat outside, or if we are in the car. We are still working on that! Good luck to you!!! |
Here's what worked for Rowdy. He started barking at us at about 3-4 months old when he wanted us to play with him or wanted us to do something for him, or just wanted our attention. I really didn't know what to do so I thought that I would do what his (canine) mom might do if he misbehaved. He was wearing his harness and when he stated the barking at me - I picked him up by the back of his harness and shook him (gently) like his canine mom might do (pick him up by the scruff of the neck or nip him). It startled him so much. He ran to my husband and looked back at me like, "she is crazy!!!" We only had to do the correction 2 more times and he completely stopped the barking at us to get our attention. I didn't correct him for barking at noises outside and he didn't/doesn't bark when he is playing. Now he barks at the black lab next door and I can't seem to stop it - except when I go outside or look outside, he stops and comes back in the house. I wish I could stop him from starting the barking at the lab - but he only barks when the lab barks, so I guess it could be worse. |
I use a spray bottle w/ water in it and when Kloey misbehaves, I spray her in the face as I say NO in a stern voice, this has really helped, she don't even beg at the dinner table anymore. And now she knows and understands the word NO! |
Thanks Thank you for all your helpful advice. I tried the water spray but Zoe seems to like it. I can't do the harness thing because he hardly has it on. I will try the coins in a can. I hope this works. Thanks |

I've never had a barker so I don't know if it works, but it's worth a try. |

I definitely have a "no barking" Yorkie. How did I get so lucky. He very rarely barks. Occasionally at something outside - or another dog barking on TV. It was funny the other evening because I was sitting with my quiet little Yorkie watching the Dog Whisperer, and he barked more during that program then he has ever barked in his life. It was because there were a lot of dogs barking on the program. He definitely knew that that was a program about dogs. Carol Jean |
Mine bark when someones at the door. They bark looking out the windows watching the cats. and they bark at dogs on TV lol. |
My girl loves to bark! Mainly at the cats, but also whenever anyone comes to the door, which I have no problem with. I will try the ideas suggested for the cat barking! |
Pippa loves to bark too  Water spray works :D |
Delilah now barks all the time when she goes out at night. She seems frantic. I think she is afraid of the dark. I don't know what to do either. I am going to the can thing. Thanks |
Coco loves to bark. She didn't at first, but she must have figured out she could do it, and it is mostly an attention thing. I will be trying some of your suggestions. |
correct me if i am wrong but isnt it the trait of a Yorkie to be a barker???? |
