My yorkie barks too. I am not sure how I taught her to stop when I say "enough" but she stops when I give her that command. :aimeeyork I am sorry I'm not much help. It probably helped that she went to obendience classes too. :animal-pa |
Edgar doesn't really bark a whole lot. He will bark at the normal things, knocking (not just on the front door), being startled, and the dog that lives behind us. Then he has a half bark, usually when we are on a walk and he sees other dogs in windows, kindof like he's trying to be tough--swearing under his breath or something. i usually either ask him "what is it?" in case i missed the knock on the door, or tell him, "that'S ENOugH!" which is what my mother used to say.... And then there is the thing i tOLd my husband not to do! Don't let him bark to get you to play....but NOoooo! so when edgar wants to play with my husband he picks up a toy and barks once. but if he is ignored, he brings the toy to wherever eric went and barks once. So Funny. For me he just brings the toy. and omg when he shakes his "sock" around and it smacks him and he growls at it! that's the funniest thing in the world! |
knock on wood...Punkin doesn't bark too much. She'll bark to go out (sometimes -still working on bell training), when the door bell rings or if something scares her. Some days she doesn't bark at all. |

I have 5 yorkies and 1 maltese and I am happy to say they are not barkers. They bark when dad comes home or if there is someone lurking outside our house.....or the mailman..... but they really don't bark much. I have a boy....LungLung who I've never heard bark! He acts like a cat. I don't know how I got so lucky! |

I had a problem with Gus barking and he still get a bit crazy when someone comes to the door. I either clap my hands and tell him to stop or yell out his name and this will usually make him stop. When he was a pup, I thought I would get the spray bottle a try. But the darn bottle was set at a stream and I got him right in the eye. Poor little guy. He was so scared of it after that. I never did it again. |

Barking - Yorkies do share this trait with most other small breeds. I think it's nature's way of giving them some way to protect themselves - since they are so small and can't do much else. You know how tough most "little dogs" appear to be. And, I'm sure occasionally it works when they confront something that is larger than they are. And don't we know - that some dogs just bark more than others do. It's part of their personality and temperment. And, no doubt, environment has a lot to do with how much any dog barks. I live alone and am a calm, easygoing person... and my dog doesn't bark much at all. But I'm sure you could put him in a busier household with children running in and out and laughing and playing and a lot going on - and he'd bark a lot more than he does now. He'd just want to be part of the family. Carol Jean |
I have started to use the pennies in the can tecnique with Charley as he has started to bark at everything.It is working really well and last night I only had to rattle it very gently and he stopped. I personally wouldn't want to use the pinch the ear method as I would never want to cause fear as this can lead to aggression. Sharon,Charley & Melody xxx |
Chloe has started to become a big barker and she is only 3 months old. It is mostly for attention. But, she does not just bark, she screams. That dog has a terrible temper. Because sometimes we are busy eating or doing stuff around the house. And she wants our constant attention. Usually if we ignore it, she will stop. The yorkie I had before her, Lacey, was a big barker. I used to send her to her room when it got out of control. She would go hysterical with barking if a dog or cat was outside near our yard. I would scream, Lacey, go to your room! (Which was the laundry room) And she knew what it meant too. She knew she was doing wrong because she would punish herself and go in the laundry room. And I would shut the door. She would cry for a few minutes to get out. And then she would stop and be quiet. I would always feel sorry for her afterwards and the punishment never went beyond 10 minutes. Then, she would give me so many kisses like she has been locked up for an hour. |

My Daisy barks when the doorbell rings, when a car pulls into the driveway, at other dogs and especially when she chases our 20 pound cat (she is 3 1/2 pounds). Otherwise, when she wants to play or wants your attention, she "talks" to you- she has different low moans that she uses that vary in sound, length and volume depending upon what she wants. It is the cutest thing. I swear she sounds like she's trying to actually say words. |
Buckeye barks at everything out side. sitting in his window. I have resorted to putting blinds up there. my husband keeps threatening to get one of those bark collars. I do a firm no on that one. when someone comes he will throw a fit. barking the whole time. schwans man mostlly. so what I do is to have the can with the pennies in it. shake it one time really hard and say no firmly at the same time and he usually will calm down. don't ring it like a bell but hard firm shake once. actually some times all i have to do is say "you want the can?". or just reaching for it. LOL Ahia is not a barker unless she sees a lizzard or something. without Buckeye to teach her she probably would not bark at all. Tressie is a barker about everything. when she wants something, something out side, sees her image in the night window, etc. Archie is a follower. He will whine when he wants something. bark when he is excited if the others will bark first. |
