WHY Do You Sneak Your Dog Around? After reading that thread with 2 mil opinions about sneaking dogs in place, I couldn't help but wonder Why do you sneak your dog around? Will he not be ok while you run to the post office? or to pick up some toilet paper from the pharmacy? Does he have to come? Or is it a novelty to bring him? Do you like the attention you will get if someone sees him? Will you worry about him getting into something while you're not there? What exactly is it that is appealing about carrying a 3 to 10lb dog on your shoulder while you shop and run errands? P.S. service dogs are obviously not included in this little test. |
Me first. I don't bring my dog anywhere he's not allowed. I am never even bringing him to Petsmart again after our last trip because he was miserable. He pooed on the floor as soon as we got there and then wanted me to carry him the whole time. He kept jumping up on me. It's hard to carry a dog and shop (was shopping for my gift exch buddy). I don't like leaving him either, but I think it's less stressful/ more fun for him when he's at home acting like a dog and not stuffed in a bag. |
LOL !! I don't sneak my girls anywhere ....but they do like to go to a few stores with me where dogs are allowed....but that's only for THEM to get a special treat (like Petco and Petsmart) because mostly I don't take them with me. Stewie sounds just like Chanel and Cheri...they jump on me so much I end up carrying them even in the Dog Park :D |
I forgot one more tidbit of an opinion. I think that small dogs are no better than big dogs, so if someone sneaks their 2lb Chihuahua into an establishment or even NOT sneak them in but are welcomed, they shouldn't be surprised to see a big dog. I really don't think big dog owners have a lot of nerve - I think they're prob fed up w/ small dog owners who think it's ok that because they're small. |
I have to agree.. Daisy only goes to Pet Stores.. Everywhere else, she has to stay home.. I don't think it's fair.. Should I be able to bring my 105 lb lab also?? |
I take Thor with me because I just want to be with him. I don't take him anywhere that he isn't allowed (he is simply too big and loud to sneak!). I think he enjoys the new smells and scenes. I DON'T like the attention because I don't like little kids getting near him, and I'm worried that he'll spaz out on someone. So, it's for mommy, doggie time  |
i don't "sneak" my yorkie around...for the most part :p ... but i do function on a "don't ask don't tell". ie, no sign that says no pet, then i'm bringing my puppy with me. but just to be safe, i will usually have him in his carrier, for 2 reasons: 1. i don't want any potential static and 2. i don't want any potential accidents and he won't pee or poo in his carrier. i don't like to leave him in the car because you never know if someone might break in and steal him. and since i don't have a yard for him to run around, i'd like to take him out on errands with me and walk whenever we're outside. of course, positive attention is always nice... negative attention i can do without. |
I was @ Target on Thurs and this girl had a Shih Tzu who was no more than 5 wks old and no more than 1.5lbs. She had her wrapped in a blanket like a baby and was walking around the store - not even shopping, just walking aroudn the store smiling at people and showing them this poor puppy. She got asked to leave by a person who was stocking shelves by the laundry detergent and I must say that I laughed out loud really hard because I couldn't believe this chick. :) Totally wanted attention. Unfortunately, I think there are a lot of people who JUST go into stores to get attention for themselves and their new puppy (who shouldnt have even been out in the 1st place, but that's a whole diff thread ;) ) |
Ok Well one reason for sneaking them in. You are away from home and it is too hot or too cold to leave them in the car, and no one is with you to stay with them and you are out of tampons  and it is necessary to run into walmart. :D I've never done it because my husband always sits in the car with her. But I have wondered what I would do with her in a situation like that. Jeanie |
Lilah has only ever gone places she's allowed. I don't take her to places she isn't welcome, because I really don't feel like being asked to leave. As for attention... I hate it! I find that most people look at her like she's a joke, and at me like I think I'm Paris Hilton. |
Well I dont take Chachi with me anywhere because he is too big. The only place I take Jewels besides the dog supermarkets is the home improvement stores. I have seen other people in there with little dogs too so I dont think it is sneaking. |
I don't sneak Ted any where either...If it says "no dogs" I respect that and abide by the rules because I truly do understand that while I love my 4 leg critters not everyone feels the same way. I do bring Ted with me every where that it's possible to bring him and now that also includes Toby too but my reasoning is because we travel quite often back to Minnesota and we drive. So, I need them to enjoy traveling in the car and I also need them to be able to adjust to situations without freaking out when something is different than their usual routine. |
Well.... I actually brought my chihuahua to the dollar store a couple of times (I use to work there, so it was ok with the owner) and to the Coach store. I called Coach before I went in to see if it was ok to bring him in since I was looking at collars and I wanted to see if it would fit. They were totally ok with it and encouraged me to come back anytime. :) IMO, my dogs are like my children. I would not leave a baby in a car....and I would never leave my dog in the car. However, if I know he can't go inside the store, he definitely stays at home with someone. As for big dogs....yes, I feel they get a bad reputation and would probably love going inside stores other than Petsmart/Petco. I would love to take my sister's pitbull inside Coach, lol. :D |

I have two kids (grown now) and one new granddaughter, and it still drives me crazy to go someplace and see the kids out of control and the parents not even noticing that their little angel is a monster. I tend to shop and attend movies off hours to avoid them. I'm all for making your dogs and kids behave. Everyone's happier that way. (or at least I am lol) |
I've yet to take siri somewhere he wasnt allowed...but i dont think i will ever try to "sneak" him in where its not allowed. I HATE attention, but should have thought about that before i got him because he is such an attention magnet- every 10 steps walking him someone stops to ask to pet him or to just squeak about how cute/teeny he is. I feel like bringing him somewhere he's not allowed isnt fair to anyone. Not everyone in the world is a dog lover [though they should be !! ]so in all fairness they shouldnt be subjected to my dog "just because." jmo. Once i get him his carrier, i will feel better about bringing him into places, but him being so small and on a leash leaves the possibilty of him getting stepped on  so i dont really feel comfy yet bringing him to places. |
