Does your dog eat poop? I've done a search and have seen several responses on this. Stomper is over 1 year's old and just started eating poop like crazy. He hangs out with this other dog during the day. The dog will poop and he will be right behind it and eat it before I can get to him. It is terrible and a bad habit. We don't have any cats, but the lady next to us has about 3 of them. They also poop in our yard and of course Stomper eats it! I've heard that you can give your dog (or the dog that poops) Forbid, Deter, pinapple/spinach or meat tenderizer to prevent this behavior. Have you found any of these to work? Please advise. I have a vet appoitment on Friday for Stomper and plan to bring his food and discuss this problem with them. However, he is going their to get his 1 year old shots. So...if you have advise that you feel will work, please share! Thanks, |
I'd like to know how you get on at the vets as my little one (6mths) eats her poop and i think she eats the rabbits poop aswell. so it would be interesting to see what they recomend! |
This is embarassing, but Zeus thinks cat poop is a great treat! He has gotten better, but ocassionally I will find that he has been in the cats' litter box!! Yuck!! |
I Don't Have Any Advice... But I think some of the reasons they eat it, is because there might be undigested foods in it. I think it's a great idea to check with your vet. Please let us know. |
I wish there was something!! My 2 are over 1 year and this habit is still going on... I hate it! I have tried everything and nothing works...Although, I do have to admit that it is kinda is less and less eating it. Only b/c I make sure that I do get the morning and night poops before they do. So, they are only left with what they do during the day, and lately, I have been coming home and the poop during the day only looks 'sampled'. I wish there was something out there that would definatly stop this. I am planning on trying the 'coins in the can'. Roxy and TJ will bark and beg now for food. I shook the coins in the can at them for barking and begging and they stopped. They are TERRIFIED of the coins in the can. So, I think I will try to catch them eatting poop and then shake the can at them, MAYBE that will work????? |
I'm gagging as I read this - yuck. We've caught Punkin twice doing this  Both times it was when she pooped on the carpet - not sure if she was hiding the evidence or not. Outside it hasn't been an issue. I asked a friend the other day about it and she said she thought it was a behavioural thing not a nutrition thing (which is what someone else told me). I can't wait to hear the suggestions! |
Daisy smells her afterwards, but so far has not eaten it.. I sure hope that doesn't start.. Gross! I won't really want anymore face kisses... :D |
For those of you who have dogs that eat cat feces, they won't stop. Cat food is much richer in fat, vitamins, nutrients, etc and they can tell that in the poop so they eat it! We used to catch my sister's lab eating right out of the litter box. All dogs do it, unfortunately. |
My little girl eats her and my boys.... The vet gave me forbid and it didn't work. (He said it works for everyone else though).. Now I'm using something I got at petsmart. I'll look on the site and see if I can find it and write back. Lucy hasn't eat any poop in about a week now so it's working well for her.. Crystal |

Sorry I couldn't find it on the web site..... It's in a blue box and it was the only one they had so maybe you can call or go in and ask about it. It's also less expensive than the forbid that the vet will sell you. (Also it tastes great, my pups think it's a treat every day) LOL Crystal |

My husband saw him run across the yard with a turd in his mouth and said it looked like he was smoking a cigar. So now we refer to them as stogies... :D |
it's very true! my lulu loves cat poop and usually waits for my girlfriend's cat mimi to come out at night and poop at the litter box. when mimi leaves, here enters lulu and has a feast. chestnut is more picky with her food; so she doesn't touch it. lulu is a voracious eater and eats almost anything. |
One thing I forgot to mention is something that happened yesterday... I got home from work to find barf ALL over my house!!! It was on the carpet, rugs, couch, etc. I counted a total of 9 places. I spent almost 3 hours cleaning everything... It smelt like poop so I know it was eaten and barfed up. I know he didn't learn a lesson since his doggy friend came over today and before I could pick up her poop...HE ATE IT. This is so gross and I'm not sure there is really anything I can do. :( |
