New to the Website and am going to get a puppy today and Need Advice quickly Hi - I have the choice of a 7 week old puppy or a 4 month old puppy. Which do you think is the best choice for me. Everything I've read says that 14 weeks is ideal for the puppies to go to a new home, but most people in my area are selling them at 7 weeks. I'm worried that the breeder who has the 4 month old puppies had trouble selling them, so I'm really confused? What do you think? |
Have you seen any of the pups yet? I never let my babies go before at least 12 weeks and then only if I know the person. Most of mine stay with us until 16 weeks or older. Really check everything out when you go there. Look at how well cared for the dogs are, how many dogs, look at both the sire & the dam ask tons of questions. I think there is a thread somewhere on here that talks about all the questions to ask. I'm not sure where, maybe some else will know. Good luck and keep us posted on what you get. One more thing, IMO a 7 week old pup is way to young to leave the nest. :) |
PS: welcome to TY ;) Meant YT. Need another cup of coffee.LOL |
Yes, take a look at both. It is much wiser to get the older of the two but only if they are healthy. Clear eyes, no runny nose and by 14 weeks, make sure that the ears are erect, if they aren't chances are they won't be. The extra time with mom pays off in manners, but that's not saying that the 7 week old won't be good, but you'll have to take extra special care to make sure he's eating well and stays warm. Many years ago, I too, bought a 7 week old, not knowing better, but he was one of the best dogs that I ever had, I still miss him so... |
I'd probably go for the four month old, but I'd need more information on both breeders. |
Welcome to YT and hope you have fun today with the puppy! |
I got my baby Hayley at 7 weeks and she did fine. If they seem healthy and eating on their own I like a lil baby seems like they bond to you so much when they are that young, I stress," providing they are healthy and eating well" |
Hi - I just talked to the breeder of the 7 week old and she had posted pictures in the paper and gave me great information. She sounded very concerned that the puppies go to a good home. I also talked to the breeder of the older dogs and said she was going to keep them and breed them, but couldn't find enough money to buy a male dog and that's why she hadn't sold them earlier. I'm going to look at the older dogs first, but my gut feelings is that the first breeder really took more care and love in the breeding in her dogs. I'll let you know what happens. :) |
I got my Chloe at 6 weeks old. But, if I had to do it over again, I would of prefered her to be 12 weeks or even a little older. I love her to death and even though we only been having her for 2 and half weeks, I could not imagine life without her. But, I think if she was older, she would of had more training in housebreaking from the breeder. Housebreaking is very time consuming on such a young puppy that does not yet understand. If I ever get another yorkie, I want one 4 months old or older. |
I have the 7 week old baby! Hi - after all the worry, I tried to connect with the owners of the older puppies and she never returned my calls. So, I went and looked at the 7 week olds and feel in love with one of them, she has a bear face and is as sweet as can be. She eats well and we made it through the night with just a bit of fuss. |

Congrats! Can't wait to see your new furbaby! Did you name her yet? LOL! |
Congratulations! |
congradulations ..your gonna love your new baby |
Haven't named the baby yet! My husband is out of town and my son and I told him he could pick the name so we're waiting for him to get home. He should be here in 4 more hours, so we've just been calling her our baby for now. She really is clingy and wants to be held all the time. Is that normal? |
Hello and welcome here. I would never let one go before 12 weeks at least because before that it is a very important time in their little lives. |

If the puppy is a good size and eats well - you'll probably do fine. But -- wouldn't hurt to ask if you can pay for the puppy and get it in another week or two. I got my pup at 8 weeks - he has eaten me out of house and home from the first night on. And - he has been perfectly healthy. I can assure you though that he slept most of the time - so cute. He ate, played his little heart out and took long long naps. Carol Jean |
She's eating well. She weighs 2 lbs. She has to be near us at all times. Luckily I can take her to work with me. She sleeps in her crate, on the floor by my desk or in my lap, so I probably am spoiling her, but she crys so much if I leave her alone and I do have the luxury of taking her with me. I also didn't want her to develop any psych problems since she only turned 8 weeks old today. Her Mom weighed 41/2 lbs and her dad weighed 31/2 lbs. I saw them. Do you think full grown she'll be in that range? |

If she's already 2 pounds at 8 weeks, I would guess she is going to get larger than both of her parents, probably about 6 pounds. They say to double their weight at 3 months. |

Aren't they just the cutest when they drool, doze, and fall asleep in your lap?? I bet all your co-workers are envious! |
It is the norm here to get your puppy at 8 weeks old . All my dogs have been around that age when I have got them and I have had no problems. The vets here recommend that after the jags that you get them socialised but even before they can go outside they say you should try different experiences with them with visitors to the house etc but dont overload them all at the one time. Good luck with your new puppy cant wait to hear what her name is. |
Not one of my babies will leave home at such an early age. Yes, they eat and pee and poop normal, but their social and psychological development needs to be carried on with the mom and the littermates. I know of one breeder in my area who places her Yorkies at 8 weeks but I never refer potential buyers to her if I do not have a puppy...JMO |

I got my first female at 8 weeks, my second male at 8 weeks and my next baby girl I'm getting is going to be 8 weeks. I'm sure I'm going to infuriate some breeders by saying this, but I personally feel (I am not a breeder) that some breeder's want to keep the pup until 12 weeks just so they know they're not giving a way a super tiny one that they can charge more money for! I find it strange that if a smaller puppy is considered less healthy - why do they charge more money for them??? The home of my new baby has a working Mom and a 2 and 4 year old - I don't have any children at home and am able to be with the puppy all day since I don't work - where do you think the puppy is better off? Also, my dogs have never seemed to be lacking socially, but they do think they're more human than dog! |
Thanks for all the helpful advice. I guess she might grow up thinking she is a person instead of a dog. Her name is Xena - my Husban and Son named her. They wanted her to be a strong, beautiful warrior princess when she grows up. I found a growth chart - but only one on yorkiepassion.com and according to it, it said she should weigh around 4.5 to 5 lbs. So, I'm still confused on the weight issue. |

 Thats awsome. Congrats!!!!!!!!!!! :congrats: |
COngratulations on your new pup. Love her name Xena, she will be a warrior princess. Too cute. Can not wait to see pics of Xena. ;) |
Congrads..... Just a little advice..it's good to keep the puppy with you for bonding purposes that and it's hard to leave them..but you also might want to allow the puppy to have some time home alone. That way if something ever happens and she has to spend the day home alone she will feel comfortable with that and not all stressed out. |
