My yorkie doesn't bark? Hi, I just got a Yorkie yesterday. I haven't heard him bark once and he seems very very quiet. The prior owner told me he doesn't really bark and if he does makes a sound, its like a bird chirping. He's about 5 months old, very well behave and friendly. He seems healthy and have all his shots. He doesn't seem like any other yorkie I've experience. I've never seen or heard such a quiet dog. Is there anything wrong? Not that I'm complaining, I live in a apartment building and appreciate all the sleep I can get. I'm just a bit concern if there might be anything wrong with my puppy. |
:wavey: Welcome to YT!!!! I wouldn't worry about his barking. Just give him time to adjust. We would love to see a picture. :D Did you pick out a name yet???? |
oh you just wait, he will bark real soon, you will see and wish he never started....enjoy it |
3 Attachment(s) My girlfriend named him "Coco". Yes it's a girly name but still cute. |
He just doesn't have much to say :D My yorkie is not a barker/yapper. |
Welcome to YT. Don't worry about your doggy, count your blessings. My Nikko is the noisiest little boy around!! He barks at everything and lately has been barking more than ever. He barks at his toys, he barks to get my attention, he barks when you leave him in another room and he wants you to come over to him. He even barks at the curtains when they move if the window is open. I remember being like you when I first brought him home at 3 months old. He was so quiet, I worried that there was something wrong with him. Oh how I miss those quiet old days!! :) |
Welcome to Yorkie Talk! Dont worry about anything I didnt hear Chloe bark until a week after we got her and Daisy I think it was more like 2 weeks. My two don't ever bark its very rare that you will hear them bark! Your little guy is very cute btw! |
Just enjoy it!!!!!! :D |
Lucky you! |
I love his little face and ears. Soooo cute. I got one of my Yorkie's at 5 months too because the breeder wanted to keep her for breeding but she didn't hit the proper weight to be bred. Both of mine aren't barkers either. They both know not to bark inside but i take them for 2-3 walks a day and when their in the park and see a squirrel or bird they sometimes bark and chase them (its so cute). |
Welcome to YT! Mark my words we'll hear from you soon enough on how to STOP him from barking! My Tucker is so loud and his bark goes right through me like a knife. Enjoy the quiet while you have it. |
My first yorkie, Mickey (he's 6 years old)... didn't make a sound either when I got him... I told my husband that he was the most expensive hamster ever... Anyways... I thought all yorkies would be like him.... My Jasmine, who is 16 months old more than makes up for Mickey ... she can make you ears bleed.... it's so high pitched!!!! :D :D :D Consider yourself lucky. By the way, welcome to YT! |
Thanks everyone, all the great advice really put my mind at ease. This is such an awesome forum, full of a lot of helpful and positive people. I'm very glad to be a part of this community. Well now that I know Coco's "normal", I hope he doesn't turn into a noisy one. :) |
Yeah, Yoshi is almost 6 months now and has barked maybe 3 times. Not barking fits 3 times, but 3 actual barks 3 times. He is a silent ninja. He is ridiculously healthy and will get into anything, but he is just as quiet as a mouse. a mouse that is carrying my socks and shoes off. |
LUCKY! j/k..i bet he will soon..just wait! :D |
Your yorkie is so cute!!! I don't think you need to worry about him not barking.. Maybe he is trying to get used to the new home and being shy!!! :) Once he gets to know you... he will show his color.. I mean some dogs are quiet... and that should be fine too :) :) |
Your yorkie is cute. Could he have possibly been debarked by the breeder? |
I got my pup when he was 8 weeks old and he almost never barked (but because he did a few times - I knew he knew how). He's about 6 months old now, and he has never turned into much of a barker...but does occasionally. I'm sure some Yorkies just bark more than others. But, also the environment they are in certainly must affect the amount they bark. I live alone with a very quiet Bichon (who barks very little), and I don't think my little Yorkie has a lot to bark about. I'll bet if I had more people living here and children running in and out and playing - he'd join right in and bark a lot more than he does now. Don't worry - you may just have a more laid back quiet little Yorkie than some people have. Carol Jean **** Why would breeders "debark" little puppies. It is a surgery they'd have to pay for - and they aren't keeping the puppies so why would their barking bother them -- and most people wouldn't want this done in the first place. I can't imagine a breeder doing this for no good reason...... |
Your yorkie is soooooo cute love the ears!!! you jsut wait a few and he'll start barking. I got my yorkie when he was 7 months old and he hardley made a sound when i brought him home. But now if it's not me or his papa or grandparents he barks like crazy especially if i'm right there (I assume he's trying to protect his mama) Enjoy the peace and quiet while you can lol :D |
barking Zoe is three and still rarely barks. She's not hyper at all. She is just right for us. Weezer :) |

oH, BELIEVE ME! When he has something on his mind you will know it!!!!!!!! Forever...they are like grumbly ole men...once they start on something they don't shut up about it. BTW, folks, my hubby is 71 so I have experience....LOL |

Ah, that was my boyfriend 'Nyoneway.' He was logged onto my name by accident. I'd never kick the poor thing -- even if it's by accident! ;] |

Enjoy the peace while you can :D LoL! I'm sure you'll hear the barking soon enough :) |
My Bichon wouldn't make a sound if I accidently hurt him (he knows how to bark - but he's just very quiet - most of the time). On the other hand, if I accidentally hurt my Yorkie - only a tiny little bit - he'd act like he's being killed. He is really a wimp - when it comes to a little pain. Carol Jean |
my little one was a non-barker for a while too! the first time i heard him bark was when he was dreaming... he let out some soft barks and paddled his feet on my lap, sleeping... it's so funny. and he does bark like a bird chirp too. i say... savor it while you can!!!! |
Here's my advice: Wait 3 weeks. If he still isn't barking, give me a call and we can trade Yorkies!!! ;) :p |
