Question about show dogs... So I was watching one of the dog shows on television and something reallllllly bothered me. I noticed that every single dog was pratically being dragged across the floor :mad: Is this a normal practice? The had the leash around their necks and their poor little necks were being stretched so high up and you could tell they were being dragged because their front legs were gliding across the floor. This was especially apparent with the toy and terrier groups, since they are somewhat smaller dogs. It just bothered me because the dogs were NOT having a fun time and it looked really cruel and unusual :thumbdown Is this common? Why do they do that to the poor dogs? I'd love some insight on this. It just bothered me. I don't want to start anything but I felt sorry for those poor babies, and the wrapping thread got me remembering the dog show. I mean no offense to any show dog owners, or anyone else, I am just curious. |
I have seen some in the ring that do have the leads so tight that the dogs seem to be walking on their hind legs, but most do not do that. The lead is just held tight enough so that the dog does not pull out in front of you too much. You are supposed to keep your dog in control and not let it move up on the dog in front of it. Sometimes the dogs want to run and tend to pull up too much. |
I saw the first few and thought, ok maybe those dogs were trying to run ahead, but it seemed like ALLLLL of them were being dragged and that lead looked so tight around their poor little necks. :( It just made me sad, at the lengths people go to get what they want at the expense of their babies. :thumbdown |
1 Attachment(s) I have seen that too, and I think most of us look down on those who do that to their dogs as they are obviously trying to compensate for something the dog doesn't have. Here's a pic of my boy moving in the ring this past weekend, as you can see I was having to hold him BACK not up he was wanting to GOOOOOO! LOL |

I agree with Becki, I don't like to see people pull the dogs up either, and I have found that it is mostly the handlers that seem to do that. Breeder/handlers are showing their own dogs, and are much more gentle with them. I will not hire a handler for my dogs, it may take me longer to finish them, but I know they are treated good while they are being shown. I have seen how rough some handlers are with dogs, not for me. |
They are suppose to keep the head high. The lead collar does not rest on their trachea but rather VERY high on the neck. As to why they hold them up to where their front paws aren't walking on the ground??? I do not know but maybe one of the show breeders can answer that. |
I thought the reason they almost have the dog's feet off the ground was to give the appearance of prancing. |
No, if they prance you can tell without them being raised off the floor. When my boy is behaving, he has a prance, but his lead is not being tugged to make him prance. |

i actually had been wondering this too after watching all the dog shows... it is quite disturbing to see when they appear to be dragging the dog. :thumbdown At least Kimberley said its not on their trachea, which is a good thing.:thumbup: But maybe they just have trouble controlling their dog and should work on training them instead of showing :rolleyes: |

Or to compensate for a bad topline that you can hide when stacking, but not when moving, unless you sinch the dog up so high it's paddling air with its front paws...little trick us owner/handlers love our dogs too much to do. Winning at any cost is not in my vocabulary...I'd rather lose like a big stinker and have my doggie still love me, LOL Besides, I'm not putting a dog in the ring with a bad topline..so nothing to have to compensate for...whatcha see is whatcha get! |

I never had to drag Gazou or Heidi in the ring . Sometimes peoples are too fast when they are gaiting their dogs . |
The judges see and know, but there are too many times that the judge picks the person on the other end of the lead instead of the best dog. There is a lot of politics in dog shows. There are some judges I simply refuse to show under because I know without a doubt that a certain handler will win over the best dog. No sense in wasting my money on that show. |

yes i was referring to the one on page 1- and that pic of him is amazing, he is gorgeous. god bless you for getting him to just stand there! lol sirius would be trying to sniff his way off. mmyorkies- that is so dishonest i think, for the judges to pick a dog because of the handler and not the dog itself! i can only imagine how frustrating that must be. Is there a way for people to report that kind of bias? its so unfair :thumbdown politics or not, it should be about the dog...unless of course the handler decides to ge on all fours and submit to inspection :rolleyes: let's hope she/he had braces and doesnt have an under/over bite!! :D |

Maybe we will get to meet, we will be there (Louisville) from Wednesday to Sunday. We will probably put one or two in the speciality, but I am not real thrilled with the judge for the specialty. |

I'll look for you Trudie! I'll come up Thurs and leave Fri. I went and researched the judge, seems she favors one particular handler a LOT.. LOL hmmm.. oh well. If it weren't political, it wouldn't be showing, LOL ha! Wonder who the sweeps judge is going to be, do you know? |
