Leaving yorkies at hotel.....
 

Next week me, my husband and the two yorkies are going to Tulsa, Ok for the birth of our second grand daughter. We will be staying 2 days (over night) in a hotel. I have already gotten the names of some that will allow you to have your pets that are close to the hospital. I am just a little worried about leaving them in the room by themselves while we are out and at the hospital. I know it will not be a good option to leave them in the car in their carriers because of the cooler temps-weather. I worry about someone taking them out of our room more than anything. Am I just worrying too much or am I being too over protective. I have thought about putting out the do not disturb sign. Any suggestions or comments to calm my fears would be greatly appreciated.

What days are you coming? Which hospital? I live in Okla and work in Tulsa. Just trying to brainstorm here.

I've thought about that also...I'd be scared to take Miko on a trip with me and have him stolen from my room! Are there extra precautions one can take?

We will be there Feb. 27th and 28th at St. Francis Hospital.

How did you find out if they would take pets or not. I am traveling a long way to pick my puppy up and we are going to have to stay in a hotel on the way home. Is it something I can check online...or do I have to call each chain? Thanks!!

So far, when we travel to New Jersey, we've stayed in the Marriott's Residence Inn. The housekeepers put a magnet on the door to identify that we have a dog in the room just in case of fire. I believe that if you don't want anyone to go in the room while you are out, they would honor that. Unfortunately, we've never left Winston in the room by himself.

We've traveled and left Zoe in a hotel room before, in her crate with the "do not disturb" sign on the door. The hotel management knew about her, we paid extra for her to be in our room, they knew we were leaving her, and that we did not want anyone inside our room.

Fortunately we had no problems, but I was very releaved each time we went back to the room to check on her. We are actually considering getting a motor home so that we don't have to worry as much.

It is best to check ahead of time and let the hotel know you are bring a pet. Not all of them will allow pets.

My advantage on knowing which ones would allow pets is that my kids live there. They called and checked for hotels in the area that will allow us to bring them. The management will be aware that we have them and I probably will request that no one be in our room since I have found out that we can do that. I guess that I just worry too much, but they are just like our children and I would just die if something happened to them.

No, you are not worrying too much - we too have left Rowdy and I am a nervous wreck till we get back and see that he is OK. Sometimes it is inevitable that you have to take them with you and leave them in the hotel. Be aware though, that some hotels allow pets, but have a policy that you NOT leave them in the room alone. It sounds like this hotel does not have this policy.

It's funny, the person who mentioned getting an RV, to keep from leaving their baby in the hotel room - we have a 5th wheel and sometimes take it when we wouldn't otherwise, just for this very reason.

Hello fellow Arkansan! It sure would be nice to find somebody to watch them during the day, but if that's not possible I think the crate idea was good that someone posted. Are your babies used to crates? Mine sleep in theirs, but their doors never close. I don't know what they would think if they were suddenly cooped up in their crate. Good luck in whatever you do and hope everything goes well with the Grandbaby!

My Maltese, Skittles has been to hundreds of motels and I have never had a problem at a hotel. I always tell management as well as the manager of housekeeping about her. Nobody goes in my room if I'm not there. I used to take her with me when I worked. Now if I could only get Sassy used to riding without getting carsick.. Bless her heart she gets deathly ill.

in a la quinta inn when we left 4 rita ! we had 5 dogs in one room !wicth talk about lucky tho finding a hotel with 2 room free and that took dog ! less than 24 hours be4 the hurrican hit !! god was on our side ! the hole trip @ but any way th point was la quinta in was great about our dog soo keeo that in mind ! our werrnt ever alone but !

We travel a lot and stay in motels a lot on those trips. We travel with Oscar and here are a few tips for you while staying abroad with your babies:

* Check with the place you stay and make sure you are allowed to leave them alone in the room while you are gone.

* Are you gonna crate them or leave them with pee pee pads?

* If you leave them loose in the room - VERY IMPORTANT - make sure there is nothing they can get into and get in trouble. Yorkies are very inquisitive and if it is there, they will find it. Oscar has found all kinds of stuff the maid has missed and if he had been alone he would have been in big trouble. Check under the beds, behind all the furniture, put garbage cans up so they can't get into the plastic liners, etc.

If I had to leave Oscar alone in a room, I would have to crate him because he is just that kind of dog...an accident waiting to happen. Hopefully the place will be close enough to the hospital and you can make several trips back and forth to check on them. It would be great if there were a doggy day care or a great vet nearby that could babysit for you...or maybe your children know someone who could watch them for you. I hate that you will be worried about your furkids on such a wonderful day as the birth of a grandchild...but I am sure they will be o.k.

Are you driving or flying? If driving, take an Xpen and buy a couple of plastic tablecloths to put under the pen. The flannel backing keeps the tablecloth in place on the carpet and the plastic protects the carpet. Just make sure it is much larger than the pen. You could probably check an Xpen thru on the plane. A larger foldup plastic crate works well too and can be checked.
