Leaving yorkies at hotel..... Next week me, my husband and the two yorkies are going to Tulsa, Ok for the birth of our second grand daughter. We will be staying 2 days (over night) in a hotel. I have already gotten the names of some that will allow you to have your pets that are close to the hospital. I am just a little worried about leaving them in the room by themselves while we are out and at the hospital. I know it will not be a good option to leave them in the car in their carriers because of the cooler temps-weather. I worry about someone taking them out of our room more than anything. Am I just worrying too much or am I being too over protective. I have thought about putting out the do not disturb sign. Any suggestions or comments to calm my fears would be greatly appreciated. What days are you coming? Which hospital? I live in Okla and work in Tulsa. Just trying to brainstorm here. |
I've thought about that also...I'd be scared to take Miko on a trip with me and have him stolen from my room! Are there extra precautions one can take? |
We will be there Feb. 27th and 28th at St. Francis Hospital. Telea & Girls :) |
[QUOTE= I have already gotten the names of some that will allow you to have your pets that are close to the hospital. [/QUOTE] How did you find out if they would take pets or not. I am traveling a long way to pick my puppy up and we are going to have to stay in a hotel on the way home. Is it something I can check online...or do I have to call each chain? Thanks!! |
There are a couple of websites like http://www.travelpets.com/ or http://www.pettravel.com/ So far, when we travel to New Jersey, we've stayed in the Marriott's Residence Inn. The housekeepers put a magnet on the door to identify that we have a dog in the room just in case of fire. I believe that if you don't want anyone to go in the room while you are out, they would honor that. Unfortunately, we've never left Winston in the room by himself. |
We've traveled and left Zoe in a hotel room before, in her crate with the "do not disturb" sign on the door. The hotel management knew about her, we paid extra for her to be in our room, they knew we were leaving her, and that we did not want anyone inside our room. Fortunately we had no problems, but I was very releaved each time we went back to the room to check on her. We are actually considering getting a motor home so that we don't have to worry as much. It is best to check ahead of time and let the hotel know you are bring a pet. Not all of them will allow pets. |
My advantage on knowing which ones would allow pets is that my kids live there. They called and checked for hotels in the area that will allow us to bring them. The management will be aware that we have them and I probably will request that no one be in our room since I have found out that we can do that. I guess that I just worry too much, but they are just like our children and I would just die if something happened to them. Thanks to all Telea Zoe' and Mia |
No, you are not worrying too much - we too have left Rowdy and I am a nervous wreck till we get back and see that he is OK. Sometimes it is inevitable that you have to take them with you and leave them in the hotel. Be aware though, that some hotels allow pets, but have a policy that you NOT leave them in the room alone. It sounds like this hotel does not have this policy. It's funny, the person who mentioned getting an RV, to keep from leaving their baby in the hotel room - we have a 5th wheel and sometimes take it when we wouldn't otherwise, just for this very reason. Good luck with the new grandbaby!!! They are so wonderful! :D |
Hello fellow Arkansan! It sure would be nice to find somebody to watch them during the day, but if that's not possible I think the crate idea was good that someone posted. Are your babies used to crates? Mine sleep in theirs, but their doors never close. I don't know what they would think if they were suddenly cooped up in their crate. Good luck in whatever you do and hope everything goes well with the Grandbaby! |
My Maltese, Skittles has been to hundreds of motels and I have never had a problem at a hotel. I always tell management as well as the manager of housekeeping about her. Nobody goes in my room if I'm not there. I used to take her with me when I worked. Now if I could only get Sassy used to riding without getting carsick.. Bless her heart she gets deathly ill. |
we stayed in a la quinta inn when we left 4 rita ! we had 5 dogs in one room !wicth talk about lucky tho finding a hotel with 2 room free and that took dog ! less than 24 hours be4 the hurrican hit !! god was on our side ! the hole trip @ but any way th point was la quinta in was great about our dog soo keeo that in mind ! our werrnt ever alone but ! |
We travel a lot and stay in motels a lot on those trips. We travel with Oscar and here are a few tips for you while staying abroad with your babies: * Check with the place you stay and make sure you are allowed to leave them alone in the room while you are gone. * Are you gonna crate them or leave them with pee pee pads? * If you leave them loose in the room - VERY IMPORTANT - make sure there is nothing they can get into and get in trouble. Yorkies are very inquisitive and if it is there, they will find it. Oscar has found all kinds of stuff the maid has missed and if he had been alone he would have been in big trouble. Check under the beds, behind all the furniture, put garbage cans up so they can't get into the plastic liners, etc. If I had to leave Oscar alone in a room, I would have to crate him because he is just that kind of dog...an accident waiting to happen. Hopefully the place will be close enough to the hospital and you can make several trips back and forth to check on them. It would be great if there were a doggy day care or a great vet nearby that could babysit for you...or maybe your children know someone who could watch them for you. I hate that you will be worried about your furkids on such a wonderful day as the birth of a grandchild...but I am sure they will be o.k. Best of luck on your trip and congrats on that new grandbaby! They are just wonderful. Our grandson is almost 8 months old and such a joy! Hope ya'll have a good time! |

Are you driving or flying? If driving, take an Xpen and buy a couple of plastic tablecloths to put under the pen. The flannel backing keeps the tablecloth in place on the carpet and the plastic protects the carpet. Just make sure it is much larger than the pen. You could probably check an Xpen thru on the plane. A larger foldup plastic crate works well too and can be checked. The founder of SmallPawsRescue for Bichons lives in Tulsa and would be a good source of info. Her name is Robin Presnall. Congrats on the addition to your family and have a great visit.. |
I know a lot of Petsmarts now have dogy daycare maybe you could check into that. |
When we had to evacuate for Rita, we were displaced from our home for over three week. We stayed in a couple of hotels and I worried to about them getting out. I brought a baby gate just in case someone from house keeping came in and I always kept there harnesses on them when I wasn't there. Most of the house keeping staff was scared of dogs, so they wouldn't come in if they heard a dog bark, so you could imagine three yorkies barking, no house keeping. No one in my family had any problem with there pets and we had 9 dogs 11 cats and a bird and we all made it home safe. Congrats on you up comming addition to your family. |
I just went through that Quote:

I've never left Mojo alone either and worry about the same things....believe me, you are not alone!!! We have a motorhome, but we don't always take drive it. I even hate the thought of leaving him in the motorhome by himself too!! That is just natural for us Yorkie moms! On another thread, they mentioned all of what was said here....some leave them in the bathroom with all of their things (water, pee pads, toys, crate, bed, blankie, chewies, food, etc), that way, they are more confined and less likely to find anything in the carpet, under the beds, etc. (plus, they are less likely to run out the door if housekeeping does come in. There is another website: dogfriendly.com that will give you ideas of cities that allow pets (on beaches, hotels, parks, etc). I know you want your babies by you and they will love the trip over there....just try not to worry too much about them (do all of the above: talk with the managers, etc) and they will be fine. Good luck with the new grandbaby too! Just in case....I live just north of you by Devils Den State Park....I stay at home, so if you ever need help........please let me know. |
we had traveled to see the Bucks play at the alamo dome in San Antonio when Ahia was still a pup. I too was afraid to leave them alone in the motel. I wasn't worried so much about them being stolen (although i should have been). I was more worried about them feeling like I would never come back for them. I did some research and got a pet sitter that would come to the motel. It was quite expensive for the evening but well worth it. I was on the phone with this lady several times over a week before hand. I told her if she stole my babies I would break both her knee caps. LOL. she turned out to be really nice and was really good with them. they really liked her too. This might be an option for you too. Asecond grand child....... congrats. |
It's my own personal opinion, but I would never leave a pet in a hotel room unattended without leaving them in a crate. You never know when someone might enter the room and your pet could escape so quickly. Even leaving them confined in the bathroom could be risky. If someone entered the room and left the door open and then opened the bathroom door, your pet could be gone. My Zoe is tiny, less than 3 lbs, but when she is determined to run, it's hard to catch her. She would probably try to lick even a stranger to death rather than run, but I would not want to risk it. A few hours in a crate won't hurt them, if they are healthy otherwise, and could save you a lot of heartache. Wishing you the very best!! And congratulations on the new grandchild!!! |
Doggies/Hotel I just got back from showing in SC, we took 3 adult dogs, and a litter of 3 puppies. I left mama, and the 3 puppies in the hotel while at the show site (a Laquinta) had no other option as my husband is not quite ready to take care of un-weaned puppies yet (still training him)..and they did JUST FINE. I often have to leave dogs in the room while at shows, to go eat, or shop after the show, or what have you, and have never had any problem, just put them in their crate, and pray they don't bark too much. :) Have a good time, and enjoy your trip, and congratulations! |
To be honest, I wouldn't be comfortable leaving Coco in a hotel room by herself. I would rather get a sitter or a friend with pups that could watch her. I would feel horrible, having fun, or going out, knowing she will be in an unfamiliar place for God knows how long. I would consider either having a friend watch her back home, or maybe you can take the baby to your kids house and let her roam around in a room or xpen. At least being at your son/daughters house, you can be confident that no maid or service person could walk in and steal your baby or accidentally let them out. I would only consider taking Coco with me, if she could go where I went or if I knew someone that could watch her for me while on vacation. Just my opinion. Maybe I'm overprotective but I would not want to take a chance that I would be the 1 unlucky person to have something bad happen to my baby. I'm not scaring you, just giving you my opinion. |
I have traveled with several different dogs over the years. I stay in pet friendly hotels, etc. I always left them in a small pup tent, lightweight. Pixie hates anything that resembles a crate. I take her Barbie folding playpen and leave the one sided flap open and doggy proof the bathroom, close the door and tape a large note on it, 'DO NOT ENTER VICIOUS DOG!' I notify housekeeping not to do the room until I call, leave a do not disturb sign on the door and notify the desk or security that I left Pixie in my room. There is also a folding playpen in a travel bag/shoulder strap, with a velco flap on one end. I have seen them in Pet Edge and several other catalogs. I never had a problem. Jessica |
Moose just went with me a couple of weeks ago on a business trip. It was the first time I was going to leave her in the room by herself, last time she came my mom went too for a rest and relax I left moose in the room during the meetings and then got her at lunch and after we went to dinner. I have a soft side crate for travel and she stayed in there when I was gone. I also put luggage locks on the zippers of the crate so if someone did try to take her they would have to take the entire crate, no small task since it is doggie condo size :) We were at a Hilton, and at this hotel they made me sign a paper with the rules and gave me a sign for my door that said furry friend at home so the maid service would not come in. I also kept the tv on the carttin network so she was entertained. Plus moose was so cute that everyone of the staff knew us by the first night so that made me feel better at least if they would have seen her with someone else they would know something was wrong. On the last day of the meetings I had to check out before the meetings were done so moose went in her purse, no one had a clue she was with me, she slept the entire time. |
Reminds me of the time we were traveling in Arkansas with Koko. We stayed at a Best Western I believe. Going out for the day, we told the manager and housekeeping to not go in the room because of Koko. Assured that they wouldn't, we left to enjoy the sights. Came back..manager rushed out to explain that they had accidentally let Koko out! We were frantic til he explained that they had put Koko up in another room...they had to coax him with food. After that we always put Koko in a crate if we went out...much as he hated it. I think after that he expected to have his own room! |
As I mentioned above I have left Rowdy in a motel room - when I have to - we were on vacation this past summer and had a relative pass away. The funeral was in a little town and I had no choice but to leave him in the room during the funeral. My concern is that if I tell housekeeping that there is a dog in the room and to NOT come in - that is an invitation to come in and steal him. I know, I know, I'm paranoid and not very trusting, but that is the way I feel. I always the front desk people when I check in that I have a dog with me - but I am also paranoid about that too - thinking that that information is an invitation to take him when we are not there. But since many hotels have an extra fee for pets, I feel it is unethical to not tell them. Anyway, I always leave a do not disturb sign on the door - and we've never had any problems at all - but we haven't left him very much. I like the idea of leaving a Vicious Dog sign on the bathroom door!!! :D Although we usually don't confine Rowdy - I might try that next time - leaving him in the bathroom with his bed and toys and the like. Then if someone wants to come in to steal him - well, just let them try to get that Vicious Dog out of the bathroom! Anyway, good luck! |
Thanks for providing the websites for hotels that take pets.....this will be a great help.....we were going to start just calling hotels. :) |
