My baby is in the hospital
 

Last night, while I was helping my husband put something together in the garage, my 5 year old accidently swung a bat at a ball and hit Bowzer, who was behind him in the head/throat, on the backswing. (He was swinging it golf-club style)

The poor little thing was instantly knocked unconscious. I was so scared. I picked him up and I could barely feel his little heart beating. His tongue was turning grey/white and he wasn't moving. We all jumped in the car and started on our way to the Pet Hospital.

After about 10 minutes, he finally came to. He lost control of his bowels and his bladder on the way to the ER. The traffic is really bad down here and it took over an hour to get to the hospital. He's alive, but he's not right. He won't open his mouth very much, his tongue sticks out a little and he's drooling. They kept him overnight, did blood work (all normal) and x-rayed his body (normal). For some reason they can't x-ray his head unless he's unconscious, but they can't anesthesize him right now.

I feel so sick. I've been crying for hours. My kids are a mess. I keep telling my 5 year old that it was just an accident and not to be sad, but I know he feels awful.

He's at our regular vet's office today, and they think he has a fractured or broken jaw. They won't know for sure until they can x-ray him, but they are waiting another day before anesthesizing him.

I keep re-playing the scene in my head and all I keep thinking about was how I thought he was dead.

I just can't stop crying; I feel so bad for both my kids and my little Bowzer.

I am so sorry to hear about this terrible accident. I hope your little guy pulls through. I wonder why they can't go through with the head xrays? PLease keep us updated.

I am so sorry your little Bowser is going through this. I have a five year old too an accidents just happen. Hopefully he will get the care he needs and be home to you soon.

Accidents happen, that's why they're called accidents. We wish him a speedy recovery.

OMG...I am just sooooo sorry for all of you and especially the poor little dog....just the thought gives me the chills. I so hope he will be ok. Please be sure and update us on the X-ray results and treatment....what a horrid accident. :eek: :eek:

Oh, my goodness. I am so sorry to hear of this accident! Your family must be so devastated. But, these babies can be strong as little oxes and pull thru all sorts of things. Give your son lots of love and attention cause I know he feels terrible. The word ACCIDENT is in our dictionary because they happen and we don't mean to hurt anyone.
Tell him we are all praying for him and his doggie.

They cannot take the head x rays without anesthesizing the dog which would surely be much to dangerous when he had just come out of unconsciousness.....horrible story...sigh

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear about this. I'll keep you and your furbaby in my prayers.... espicially your son, I know he has to feel awful and it's hard to tell someone it was just an accident.... I posted when my little Lucy 1 died but never told how.... Well my mom was watching her and accidentaly stepped on her head while she was coming own stairs to unlock the door for me to come and see her at lunch time. It killed her instantly so she was in no pain.... Lucy was only 14 weeks old and only 2 1/2 lbs. and it was the hardest on my mom... She still feels guilty about it and nothing I could say would help... She's doing better now but it takes a while...

Your story just gave me chills...it is amazing how quickly bad things can happen. I am so sorry this happened and pray that Bowzer will be okay. Please hug your son....I feel so bad for him...accidents are hard to get over and explain to a five year old . I hope you are all better soon...Big Hug

Thank you so much everyone!!! Reading your posts brought tears to my eyes, especially yours Crystal. I'm so sorry for you and your mom.

The vet called a little while ago and said that Bowzer was able to go outside, walk around and go potty (both), which is really good. She also said he was able to eat a little bit and that if he had a serious injury to his jaw, he wouldn't be able to eat at all. She was going to anesthesize him tomorrow and x-ray him, but she said we'll hold off for now and see if he continues to improve.

I'm allowed to pick him up at 4:00 and bring him home for some pampering. We've got to keep a close eye on him and bring him back if he doesn't continue to improve, but it looks like he's already making a big turn around!!!

Oh my!! How scary!! We had a similar incident when I was a teenager and we were at a park playing horse shoes. We had a toy poodle named Peppy who was really my mother's baby. She didn't know he was there and she swung her arm back and hit him with the horseshoe. He was knocked silly too and taken to the vet but had no permanent consequences.

I am glad to hear it ounds like Bowzer is feeling better. :thumbup: How big a yorkie is he?

So happy to hear that Bowzer is improving. Before you know it he will be back to his playful self. I hope your 5 year old is doing o.k., I'm sure he was so devestated.
