Want to get a yorkie Hi all, First time here. I am planning on getting a Yorkie but I am still researching the yorkshire breed. How long can you leave a pup, say about 10 weeks old, on its own in a big enclosure in the garden with a big kennel? Are they affectionate? Playfull? Moody? I study most of the time in my room but i want a pet that likes playing but will calm down most of the time so i can study. Can you please help me decide if a yorkshire terrier is for me. |
Hi safrina, I've only had my yorkie for 2 days. They are the most precious things ever! The puppies need tons of attention! Leaving him/her in the yard is probably not the best idea. In any case, from my knowledge yorkies are 'house dogs' so they shouldn't be outside much at all. I think an adult yorkie may work well for you :) But wait for other responses, as I'm still new to the scene. |
I would not suggest that you get a Yorkie if you are planning to house it outside. They are very suseptible to all sorts of colds and they don't like being cold. Yorkies do however need lots of attention and are very high maintenance animals. If you spend lot so time studying and do not have a lot of free time to care for, love and give affection to this small breed I would re-think the type of dog you want to get. JMO |
Yea yorkies are house dogs they can only go out for short periods of time. They are also a very needy dog and would not do well in outdoor living. Some our pee pad trained and never have to go outside. They are a great little dog just very dependent and needy. |
Yorkies should not he housed outside. And if you need allot of time to study I would say a yorkie is not for you. They need lots of attention and daily care. |
Ok I hear everyone say they can't go out much or they should only be out at short periods of time. Is this just in the winter months? I would think a Yorkie would be fine outside for longer periods of times when the weather breaks. I know it's not good to have any dog outside when it's too hot but when the weather is really nice can't they be outside for a while? |
They should not be outside summer or winter for long periods of time. They are just like a baby. They are niot like those big dogs that some ignorant people keep outside all the time. |
Well I don't mean outside like in the backyard alone. I mean like if your out with them..taking them to the park or wherever. Is that a problem? Should they not be out with you hours in a day? |
Oh that is fine. They are dogs. They are just not the type of dog to be housed outside. They have hair not fur so they need coats and boots in the winter though when they go out. My dog has allergies and so he has some hair missing he wont stay outside more than 5 minutes right now. |

Want a yorkshire terrier Thanks a mill to all that got back so soon :) I just have to find the right dog for my situation. When i said i study i didnt mean i wouldnt have time to play and exercise the puppy..... the complete opposite..... i love dogs sooooo much i dont think i could ever ignore a dog when it is looking for attention :) Thanks again everyone :) will just have to look for another breed. The thing is i can only have a small dog as it will be in my room most of the time. Cheers! |
O ok..I couldn't leave my dog outside if I wanted too. I live in an apartment..lol. |
[QUOTE=tndefender]Just curious. Are you suggesting that only an ignorant person would house a large breed dog mostly outside? Here in the South there must be millions of well-cared for, happy dogs that live this way. But no I was mainly talking about the ones like people who live by me who keep there dogs out in 0 degree weater. |
A lot of people might try to talk you out of getting a yorkie if you're a student and have to study, but i don't see that as a factor. I am a college student myself and you just need to know how to balance your time and you should be fine. My puppy is 4 months old now and all I have to do is play with her a lot before i settle down to study! She's super excited when I get home from school so I can't do homework right away, but I play with her until she tires out a little, and she usually naps for about an hour at a time so I can study then. They do need a lot of attention but I don't sleep much :D so we work well together! |
I HATE seeing any dog housed outside where I am! It's so BRRRR cold! |

O yeah those dogs are prone to be out in the cold. They have a double layer coat I wouldn't want to stay inside either. Imagine yourself sitting in the house with two coats on in a house with the heat on in the winter wouldn't you want to go outside to get some air..lol |
Yorkshire Terrier Sorry to the people who are worried that i would keep by dog outside :) I mean the dog would be outside with shelter during the day and inside in my room at night. I would never leave a dog outside all night. I just cant leave the dog in the house when i am at work. Is getting two dogs asolution to leaving the little yorkshire on its own for so long? |
i dont like that no yorkie should be outside . maybe u should get a beagle or rat terrier or another type of dog !! a yorkie left out side could easly freaze to death !! even with shelter !! |
I don't know if this is possible for you safrina, but many Yorkie owners leave their dogs in "x-pens" during the day while they are at work/school. It is a small place where the dog can be inside your home, but not be destructive! |
Yorkshire terrier Thanks everyone. Its back to the drawing board for me and pick another breed. If anyone can think of a breed that suits staying outside during the day and small enough to be in my room at night that would help alot. Thanks |
Here's an example (thanks to Kathryn V :)) http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...ght=pixies+pad And I should add that it is my opinion that no small breed dog should be kept outside without your supervision. |
Great idea Thanks for that! That is really a great idea. Now all i have to do is find space for the setup :) |
It doesn't even need to be that big. As long as there is enough space for the dog to eat, sleep, and use the bathroom! |

I agree that only ignorant people house dogs outside. weather cared for great or not it still gets hot it still gets cold, there are fleas, ticks, mosqitos and all kinds of buggies. There are snakes and wild animals. Its insane to get a dog if your sole perpose is to have it live outside!!!!!!!!! |
Maybe you should think about getting a larger yorkie. I have a 9 pounder or so, and she loves it outside. Even in the cold. I do have to say that they are an energetic breed. She is 2.5 yrs old and still wants to play alot. Luckily I have 2 children to play with her too. She is just now calming down and letting me hold and pet her for longer periods of time. |
