Question for new,ignorant member
 
Hi all,

I just found this site and I am so excited about it. I do have a question. I am one of those irresponsible owners who kept putting off getting my baby girl spayed (she is 8 months now). I came home today to find out she is in heat. Can anyone give me a range of days that I might expect this to be? And can I get her spayed right after she is done or do I need to way some period of time.

I don't know for sure but I waited too long with my Pom 8 years ago and they said to wait 2 months but I'm not sure if that is right. Cali is going to be 8 months in a couple of weeks and I have put off having her spayed too! I better make that appointment. Good luck

That's funny! :D WELCOME TO YT!!!! You are bound to become addicted and learn much! I am sure you will get some help on this. Maybe go to the darker blue line above and use the "search" and type in your request. Hope to see pictures soon!

Call your vet. You may be able to have her spayed during heat and be done with it.

No personal experience here but someone just posed a thread with the same question. It was said to be about 3 weeks.

You are not ignorant! If you were you would'nt be asking these questions. She should be out of heat approx. 2 wks. It varies with every girl. Please contact your vet and ask how long should you wait before you spay her. You will want to wait until she is out of heat. There are a lot less risks. :animal36

A full heat cycle is 21 days or 3 weeks. You can get the doggie panties to help with the mess if she's not cleaning herself. At this age, they may be a little messy since they are young and immature.

Keep her away from ANY intact male. She is WAY too young to be bred.

:animal36 Thanks to everyone! I did buy some of those patie things today and she won't walk in them. I even put her favorite treat in her bowl and she wouldn't walk over to it. So it looks like I will be carrying her around this weekend.

I will call my vet in the morning. Thanks again for all your help. I think I am going to really like this group!

She'll get use to having them on...just takes a while so don't give up and carry her around everywhere. Once she figures out that they won't hurt her, she'll be just fine!

Hello and Welcome heat is 21-22 days. Mine have stayed in a little longer.

I got one of mine spayed while she was in heat and they just charged a little extra and she did just fine. Hope this help a bit

Just went through it in Nov with Polly, she was 9 month. Got the panties, but she didn't bleed that much and she kept her self real clean. She did have a false pregnancy, which scard me to death. With the great help from YT members Polly and I survived it. She will be a year old on Feb 23 and is getting spayed on Feb 27. She is on the tiny side and I wanted her to get as big as she could before I had her spayed. I just got "The New Complete Yorkshire Terrier" by Joan B. Gordon and it said the average season last three weeks and the first season may last longer and that most will have a false pergnancy after the first season.

That is good to know! Thanks. Diva stays inside most of the time unless I take her out into our back yrad that is fully fenced. I don't even think I have seen another dog near my house.

And she is still mad about the panties. WHen I take them off she keeps herself a pretty clean.
