Debi S I have an 18 year old who is always in and out of the house with his friends, I'm constantly saying WATCH THE DOG, HE'S RIGHT BEHIND YOU. So I either have to pick him up and hold him every time someone is in my house or followthese people around with instructions, watch where you're stepping, he's right behind you, shut the door, wait a minute, let me pick him up before you open the door, blah blah blah. |

I have really enjoyed reading this thread because I have gotten to the point that I print stuff off the computer like "accidents with doors and yorkies" and what ffodas are bad for dogs is posted on my refrigerator and the reasons it's bad for them. My 13 year old daughter had a neighbor friend over the other day and I had some easter egg candies in a dish. I found out later when I caugh Hefner eating something that they had thrown the candies at each other and not picked it up. A small amount of chocolate can kill a small dog. I was looking up how to induce vomiting when I realized it wasn't a chocolate candy, but he still ate candy!! I left Hefner just for an hour to run a quick errand and my son slammed his paw in the door. Luckily he wasn't seriously hurt, but I don't know how to get them to understand. I told my husband he should look at it like there's a toddler in the house and he just said then someone needs to be supervising him at all times. I have a front pack carrier I carry him now when my husband is doing fix it work around the house on the weekends because he just eavesdoors open all the time!! I am glad to know that I am not the only one going crazy over this!! |
Oh Bradley has ran out the door many time and he also doesnt come when anyone calls him...We warn people all the time and they dont listen. But the one thing I REALLY hate is when someone selling something comes and rings the door bell and you have 3 boys running for the door, trying to hold them back so you can get outside b/c no way in Hell are you going to hold the door open and they are right in front of the door not moving so you can basicly get out then one of the dogs make a run for it....Oh yeah! The guys at the door started chasing him, "he doesnt know you so he wont come for you" so really they are no help. Running around in the snow with no shoes on tring to get the lil bratley and he goes in the road while a car was coming, scared me 1/2 to death. The driver yells out the window "Take care of your f-ing dog" I just had to yell stuff back at him LOL...So long story short I got him. This happened around tax time, the guys at the door was just coming around to remind people to do their taxes!!!!! THEY EVEN WAITED for me to get the dog and come back to the house to TALK TO ME!!!! A sign is going up on the door that read "We have dogs so IF your NOT family or a friend GO AWAY and don't bother ringing the door bell b/c we wont answer" lol |
I've had the same problem as you had about people taking me seriously at times. I just you've got to either carry your Yorkie around, or quarantine him somewhere and not let anyone do anything with your Yorkie when you are busy. I think parents and financee's need to be reprimanded when they do something naughty, just like if your Yorkie did something naughty! |
Try this I have 8 grandchildren that visit and the door is constantly open and shutting. My dogs got away from me at Petsmart about two months ago in the parking lot and scared the living daylights out of me. I ordered this line (similar to a pull out leash) that attaches to your belt and lets out and pulls in while it is attached. For two weeks, the first thing I did when I came in was put this thing on me and attach to the pups. There we all three were together for every damn move. When they would leave my side, I would call them to "Come" and every time they did, they got a treat. Now when I call them, they come. Today, my grandson left the door open, and out they went into the courtyard. I stood on the porch and yelled to them to COME AND COME NOW. They did, they are not perfect yet, but much better, thank god, I am 56 and too damn old to chase them LOL. Try this, it did work for me. |
i haven't had the time to fully read all of the answers you got to this question . but i want to add that when i have company here and they don't watch good enough i put up a baby gate and i make them step over the gate to get out the door. or you could put up the gate in a seperate room until the company has left. |
the baby gate and quaranteen is a good idea BUT..... i live in a SMALL apartment. I'm talking one living room, no hallways to attach a gate to that is near the front door and a bedroom which he MAY NOT have free reighn in. My options are really nada. My fiance and i did tlak and he agrees and he will talk to the friend that let out the dog about how serious it was. But seriously, this is one of those people that jsut never gets it, he is lazy and annoying.(the friend not my fiance :p )..... as it is i am teaching him to come using treats..... hiding treats wont work because this particular friend searches through our cubards and our refridgerator (while my fiance and i are staring open mouthed at how rude he is,.... but he didnt see anything wrong with his intrusion, so this kinda gives you an idea abotu what kind of eprson he is)... |
Yeah, it's really scary when the dog gets out. This happened to me last week. I am watching my neighbor's dog, who is big, and pushed open the door and ran down the hallway. Archie was right behind her. I'm screaming for them to come back...no use, they stopped at the elevator, saw it wasn't coming and kept going. I screamed to my doorman...CLOSE THE DOOR! He just ignored me...and the dogs ran out the front door, across the big lawn, and out the side and across the street. I'm running after them and screaming. Even if I caught them, how could I carry them back in?! My neighbors who are on vacation will kill me. I'll kill myself if I lose Archie. ARGH! Then...they ran to the park, and peed. They both walked back to the side door of the apartment building like nothing ever happened. Moral of the story...dogs always come back home. It's a very scary thing because they think you want to chase them around and play and you think they will run away, but the reality is that they don't go too far from home. |
not true...... i had a cairn terrier (incedentaly this is where my phobia about loose dogs comes from) and he liked to bolt just like toby does, well.... he bolted all right, and he never came back.. . . we scoured the neighborhood, if he had gotten hit by a car he would have been reported or there would have been blood or someone who knew something..... but there was nothing... this is why i have a phobia abotu this, because it doesnt mean they will always come back, bad things happen to careless people, and i dont want to be one of those careless people |
Orinskye: I completely understand your frustration with inconsiderate and rude people!! It totally boggles my mind why people can be like that. If i were you i would seriously tell this person " If you can't respect my house rules, my dog or me and my fiancee, then you can't visit" . Plain and simple!!! I've had someone visiting like that, and it was family. The good thing is my fiancee will go bezerk and that's it. Because he loves the dog just as much as i do. I refuse to lock away my dog for anyone. This is his house and he can do whatever he wants to do. If the people visiting don't like it then, they know where the door is!!! I'm sorry to sound so mean but that is how it is in my house!!!! |
thats actually how i feel, unfortunatly my fiance likes his friend and he pays most the rent  |
Good Luck to you !!!! Hopefully your fiancee will see things the way you do, and maybe talk to his friend about the way he acts when he visits!!!! |
I fully agree with you I have the same problem with Webster, but I think that the others are just spitefull. My husband always wants to feed him different stuff and gets upset when I say he should not do it. My Mom, (visiting) tries to scare him off with, a very aggressive, NO!! I hate it. I am the one to discipline and train him, I don't want him to be a frightend little thing. He has a very special bubbly nature and just loves playing with his toys. Yesterday afternoon my Mom left him outside, guess what, he was mauling a rat, (he is only 9 weeks old), the rat was half dead afterwards but I was so upset that they did not watch him. I proud that he can catch a rat at his young age but it is all "jiggie" because he sleeps with me at night and I don't want him doing stuff that I am not aware of. |
I was always telling everyone to watch when they came in or out when I had my Tyler, as most of you know my step dad came in and left the door open well most of the time tyler would run in circles in the back yard and them come in when I asked him if he want a treat. Well that day it didn't work and my step dad was going after him he ran in to the road I live on a very busy street, and was hit by a car 2-3-05 was the worst day of my life felt like one of my kids had just died. He didn't make it I didn't see him when it happened or see him when we put in his grave, but I put alot of toys in there with him that was his fav. thing to do. Anyways to my point when I got Tommy I put a baby gate in my living room now and when any one comes over I don't have to worrie about it anymore. I would do something now before its to late!! Tyler was my first baby I really didn't think anything about it, other than getting really mad if it happened. Its your house your rules, get loud if ya have to :) there our babies. |
