I've never been so scared! This afternoon my mom and I were out running errands and we had just picked Bridget up from the groomer. Mom had to go into the grocery store so I put Bridget into her harness and leash and found a grassy area by the side of the store for a little stroll. All of a sudden 4 (yes 4!) HUGE husky type dogs come charging from a house across the street toward us. Of course, I immediately pick up my baby and run like crazy toward my car. The owner comes running acrross the street trying to get ahold of her dogs. I ran back behind my car fumbling in my pocket for my keys as the dogs were being corralled by the owner. She was having a tough time getting hold of all of them. In my blind panic I yelled at the woman "get those dogs away from here, why aren’t they on a leash"? The woman was very indignant and said “oh they aren’t going to hurt her, calm down”. I replied that I didn’t know that, those dogs are ten times my dogs size and should not be running loose! I finally got my keys and we jumped into my car. I was just shaking. I don’t know if they would have hurt her or not, but I sure wasn’t taking any chances. Took awhile for my heart to stop pounding. Bridget was oblivious to the whole thing, just mad that we left before she got to play. Just had to share... I knew you folks would understand! We will do anything to protect our precious babies! |
Wow, I am so very sorry for your scare. It was a good time to dial 911 on your cell phone and report the vicious dogs at large. |
Boy you really must have panicked. I know I sure would have ;one dog is bad enough coming at you with no place to go. |
 Oh that is a very scary occurrence - I've had that happen a couple of times at the park. I can tell myself it may just be an overreaction on my part - I can certainly be an over-protective yorkie mom - but I would not take ANY chances even on some medium-ish dogs coming at my two. You can just never tell if those dogs will be friendly or see your little one as a "toy" or a tasty snack! The best thing is to definitely keep aware of your surroundings and scoop them up like you did if you sense danger coming. The other owner should have been more apologetic and had better dog etiquette!! |
I would have reacted the same way! They was really irresponsible of her! |
Very glad every thing turned out okay!!!! |
wow that certainly is a scarey thing to have to been a part of! Just glad that everything turned out ok! |
I am glad everything was alright. It is such a good thing you had her on a leash so she didn't get scared and bolt. That is what would worry me the most about having mine follow off-leash. I am sorry the other lady was rude, but I am sure she was also upset that her dogs were loose, they can get run over, too. My six can be like a tiny pack, when one barks, they all run and bark. I know they are little, but if they were bigger, I am sure they would act the same (but look scary instead of cute) :p |
Oh my one bite fr those big dogs maybe would have been fatal for your baby!!! Thank God nothing happened!!! |
loose dogs people are so irresponsable. i have this problem frequently in my neighborhood. a few think it's ok to let their dogs run late at night. i work the night shift and get home around 1am. i like to take my furbaby for a lil walk when i get home. it's usually nice. noone is around and less cars to deal with. it's very quiet and peaceful. until we run into dogs that their owners let run free in the night. they say . "oh my dog won't hurt you". now i just call the cops and tell them where the dog lives. the cop puts the dog in the back of his car and goes to the owners home and wakes them up. i let the cops deal with them now. (after attempting to speak to the owners in person) i'm afraid these mid to large ize dogs will sneak up on us and hurt my baby. they always scare the poo out of me. you never know how a strange dog will react to our babies. even a familiar dog. be careful. |
Thank goodness you and Bridget are unharmed, physically anyway! I know exactly how you feel! I've had encounters with big dogs while with Maddie and every time, if the owners around, they say, "He or she won't hurt your yorkie!" One did attack Maddie once and thank goodness I was able to pull her away because she had a harness and leash on. That dog meant business! A few weeks ago a yellow lab jumped over our fence into our yard and went right for Maddie. That owner also said, he wouldn't hurt your yorkie! Well, why did he go for her then and chase her when she finally made her get away into the garage. I was so scared trying to pick up Maddie and keep that dog away from her. If I'd had her leash on her, I could have pulled her to me, but I shouldn't need one in our fenced back yard! I don't mind big dogs, but darn it...stay away from our yorkies! I've heard of too many yorkies being killed by big dogs...big dogs who's owners have said, "my dog won't hurt your yorkie!" I'm so glad you got through this ordeal with no injuries! |
I just posted a similar message today about my baby being "run over" by a poodle! I can't imagine being chased by huskies!! Glad to hear that you are okay and your baby was oblivious. My baby was very shaken by her little incident today. Why do owners of big dogs always insist they are "harmless" and would "never hurt a fly"? |
you must of been very fighten i would of been, thank goodness bridget was ok |
That is why a leash law is a wonderful thing! Thank goodness Bridget wasn't hurt. The dogs may not have been aggressive, but they could have trampled her and really hurt her. This woman sounds like an ignorant pet owner. |
I would have done the same thing also. Having 4 large dogs that you don't know coming at you is scary for anyone...let a long a poor little dog. Sometimes in certain areas, it's illegal to have dogs without a leash on. I would have reported her. Was anyone else around? Like any kids around? |
WOW, I would have told that woman " I'm not willing to take that chance and YOU shouldn't either!" |
Sorry that happened.... This is exactly my dad bought me a small can of mace. The natural stuff not a chemical. There are 4 pit bulls across the street from where i work. Every once in a while after I take Wrigley outside my dad sees the 4 come over sniffing around. It's a scarry thought. |
people are so rude. You know I have 2 labs and they are the sweetest babies in the world but god forbid to say it but their dogs. Even when a dog is running around outside our fence and what not I still watch them and dont let them near them. I really honestly dont think they would do anything but still...there DOGS!! Im sorry she was so passive and sucha idiot! :thumbdown |
Do you have a leash law? If so, I would not hesitate to report them. My father had a dashound killed by german shepherds who, according to their owner, would not hurt a fly. This woman might think about getting a better fence and controling her dogs if she has to pay a hefty fine for them getting out. I paid the fine a few years ago when our lab and spitz got out and ended up at the pound, and it wasn't cheap :( , but hey, it was my own fault, and we fixed the fence so it wouldn't happen again. If you don't have a leash law, you may wish to lobby for one. It could save an innocent dog, or even a person's life. |
We have new neighbors with a large German shepherd that runs loose. We're rural, but come ON! Anyway, the first time we encountered him, I was surprised -- of course. I grabbed Susan up and stuffed her inside my coat. It occurred to me later that I could have insured my own mauling that way. Even so, I wasn't really afraid for myself, only Susan. I'm very short, but I have lots of "presence" when the mood strikes and it had struck big time. I used my best "teacher" voice to tell the dog to SIT. I took it by the collar and by golly it did sit. The owner later told me it has no obedience training, so I guess I just surprised it into sitting. Since that time I've realized that the shepherd (his name is Odin) doesn't really seem to recognize Susan as a dog, and that worries me a bit. When we had big dogs we understood that they were scary to other people; why can't other big dog owners get it? |
Wow, i totally know that feeling and it makes me SO MAD!!! I walk my Yorkies at a nice park across the road from where I live and I always walk on the on leash side with my dogs on leash and i get so mad when peoples huge un-trained dogs come running up to my dogs. I always end up yelling at the stupid owners to go on the off leash side of the park or put their damn dog on a leash if they can't control it. And then i ALWAYS get the rude comment of "well my dog won't hurt your little thing" OR "My dog wants nothing to do with your Fufu dogs" oh it makes me so mad. People are so rude and dumb. I would love for once to just have a nice uninterupted walk with my Yorkies for once. |
I'm glad your dog is okay! I would have called animal control on that lady |
You should of definitely reported them! And pleaaaaaase remember that running away can definitely make them more excited. Ive had to pick Turbie up and HOLD HER above my head from other dogs while shes barking up a lil yorkie terrier storm at them, that dork  |

Well..not knowing the situation reporting the lady might be overreacting. She might have just gone out to get her mail and left the door open one split second and they got lose..we ALL know this happens even to the best of us!! Thank God nothing happened and I can't imagine your fear...I would have pee'd my pants..lol. People who let their dogs run loose in neighborhoods are LAZY!! They are too lazy to take their dogs for walks or to take their dogs out on leash to do their business....it's something that should NOT be tolertated. It doesn't have to be big dogs either. There's a boston terrier in my neighborhood who comes after me and my dog, who's on leash, quite often. Once i even had to kick it hard to get it away from my baby (bichon/poodle mix). I'm not talking sniffing or playing, I'm talking teeth gnarled trying to bite. I've called the owners about it every time it happens and they act so shocked and suprised and swear they will keep it on leash from now on!! YEAH RIGHT!! Last call i said i will call police everytime it happens from now on...and guess what...it hasn't happened again..*crossing fingers* Anyway i guess the point is thank god nothing happened and this isn't a neighborhood you live in and have to deal with these dogs everyday. I'd just let it go and say a little THANK YOU prayer to the heavens above. |
:lol tears :lol tears :lol tears :lol tears :lol tears lol i sorry but i can just imagine that! dogs running towards you and you scopping up your baby and running! lol im sorry you must have been really scared! :lol tears |

How scary! i would have been terrified too! We can't be too careful with our delicate precious babies..they might not have meant any harm but you just cant take the risk! My Heidi was once the victim of an over playful Rotty..and she ended up with a puncture wound on her back that had to be stapled! she didn't even yelp! she was such a tough little cookie! she was grabbed by a greyhound too..but thankfully escaped unhurt..after all those close shaves..and many other incidents with larger dogs..it made me very nervous..and i just would pick her up when any dog came along. I'm going to be a nervous wreck with my new baby Pixie when i start taking her out..im definatley gonna be an over protective mummy! |

And I just noticed how old this thread is!!!! |
That must have been scary. I'm weary of any dog off leash, big or small. I feel it's really irresponsible. Lately at our local park there are a group of about 10 people (5 cars) that set out lawn chairs and let their dogs.. all different sizes and shapes run all over the park. They come over to us EVERY time and the owners never even run over to them.. just keep screaming their name. I'm sorry, but the rules are keep your dogs leashed, it is a public park, NOT your backyard. |
