Confessions of a first time yorkie owner... Ok, i know for the most part, lots of members here have had lots of experience with yorkies, and dogs in general... i fall into the "other" group- never owned my own dog, didnt have one growing up, nothing. Sirius is my first furchild and im sort of learning everything as i go along... that said, i have a confession to make- i've bought sirius a total of four harnesses. not because of function, but because they never fit him right! FE had suggested i get a cat one, since sirius is about the size of a hamster :p so i did, and it fit pretty well...considering i have been putting them on WRONG for the past 2 months!!!!!!! thank god for tinkerbellscloset.com and Shana, because they have a picture of a dog wearing a harness and suddenly it dawned on me ive been putting it on wrong this whole time. [ty shana!!!!] i was putting in on like a saddle, not around his neck because the whole point was so that nothing would touch his neck! i feel so dumb, but whatever, learn something new everyday. :] so i figure i cant be the only one to make a yorkie faux pas...would anyone like to make any confessions of supidity? or am i alone on this? |
I have two yorkies and I buy the wrong sized clothes all the time. |
You are so NOT alone! Simon was my first pet too, I had never had a dog before him! I learned a lot of things from trial and error :) And the harnesses.......well most of them confuse the heck out me, still do! So mix not knowing what I'm doing with a hyper dog and it's a miracle I can ever get it on :) |
You are not alone...my mistake was putting a tiny jaw clip in Oscar's top knot. In doing that, I also grabbed the skin. It caused a sore and hair loss in that area. When the hair grew back in, it was no longer silver but red! So, be careful of what kind of apparatus you use on the baby's topknot! Oscar now just keeps his clipped short enough so it does not fall into his eyes. |
the different size clothes thing, i totally understand, Chachi! not hard to do that at all. Kimb, i thought you were a veteran dog owner!! i feel better knowing you havent been in the dog game too long- that means theres hope for me!! :p |
That's pretty funny Jackie. It took guts to admit it!!! I'm sure Sirius didn't mind. He got out of working for awhile.... :) |
I bought an Easy Walk harness and I still can't get it fit right!! LOL, you are NOT the lone ranger!! I have had dogs for years, and I am STILL learning! I think learning is a lifetime thing! :p |

You're not alone, yea I have had other furbabies, but never a Yorkie. I had no idea how much different care they needed. I read everything I could for over a year before I found her. But I always learn something new here on YT. :yorkietal |
Jackie - the harnesses to me can be a pain in the rear to figure out at times, LOL. :D I've done the same exact thing many many times, true confession there. ;) Another confession would be placing top knot bows in too tight and giving the fur kids face lifts. |
Jackie, you are definitely not alone. I learn something new from Vivi and also hear on YT everyday and I did grow up with dogs and have always had one. :) Harnesses can be confusing...there are so many different ones!!!! |

OK, am I the only one who has put the potty pads down wrong side up? The wrong side is quite waterproof and the pee just runs right off them. |
So funny about the pee pads being upside down.... :D I have also put the top knot in and gave mine a face lift...my hubby says hey look at them, they look like their faces are so tight it hurts....hehehehe I think we all do silly things but at least we do learn from them.. |
perfect example of a great mistake! dawn- i love you! that is a great mistake :p |

Fortunately for me, the guy at the pet store showed me how to put Gracie's first harness on her. Those things can be confusing.... |
I have in the past put the harness on upside down before when i was in a hurry. Not to mention the fact that before i found YT i used a coller(gaspppp)Thanks Yt.You really do learn something new every day. |
Thats kinda funny. Im so glad one of my pictures helped :p |

Me Too! I paid alot of money for that darn Easy walk harness and it's too big for Pippa the Puller. She wiggles out of it after about 1/2 a block. I guess I can use it for Scout, but he's actually a pretty good boy on leash. Pippa pulls and pulls until she basically gets tuckered out. I use Cesar Milan's techniques and keep my leash short and 'be the boss', but it doesn't matter to Pippa! |
Both my pups have the soft harnesses--inside written with a sharpie is notes saying front, chest.....silly piece of apparatus frustrated me every single time. And nothing ever fits the first time. |
I'm new to this forum..and trying to learn a lot quickly...But I thought you all would love this. My first pet as an adult was a cat... I knew I should have stayed with dogs. I've never looked this stupid with dogs. I was in my twenties and took my male cat to the vet because it's adoption health records did not seem quite right... I paid for a vet health visit because my male cat had NIPPLES! The vet paused for a very long time and then asked me if my husband had nipples. YIKES! Brenda |

Willie, our leg-lifter, is the one that wears a pee pad, but on occasion I've either put it on the wrong dog or attempted to put it on the wrong dog. They always fight me and look soooo confused (but then they are girls!!!). Willie just looks at me like I've lost my mind. :D |

Jac got bit by a lab and had to get that part shaved and cleaned. The hair around the bite mark on his side was red too! Is that what happens to all yorkies when they have hair loss and re-growth? |

I can't think of one at the moment for me but my Mom watched Samson for a weekend and I gave her his coat and a sweater. The sweater had leg bands and she was putting it on him with the leg bands going over his ears!!!!! :D She thought that was how it stayed on!!!!!!!!!! I about died laughing!! When I showed her the right way she said "oh yeah that looks better"!! :D |
