Personality Characteristics Hello all, My name is Sarah and I am getting ready for my new Yorkie. I have been doing my research to make sure I know what I am in for and get the best dog for me. I have a question for you all about the the personality differences of male vs female. I've read that Yorkies hold stonger to the sex stereotypes and that girls can more stuborn and independent while boys are more playful and loving. What do you all think about that? I was really wanting a female puppy, but now I'm thinking a male may be better for me if this is true. Thank you in advance for your help. I'm sure I'll be asking more questions soon! ;) |
:animal36 I think it depends on the induvidual puppy. I don't think we choose them, They choose us. I think GIRLS are NICE but BOYS can sometimes be NICER. GIRLS can be Real Bossy. BOYS are more WILLING TO PLEASE. |
I just got a girl puppy, I think 6 days ago. lol. She's so loving and cuddly. She follows me everywhere. She likes to sleep on my lap as often as possible. If i'm on the pc, she sits and sleeps on my lap, if I sit for two minutes, she's there! I had no idea about the boy/girl characteristicts, but I don't regret getting a girl pup at all. She is a little softy and I wouldn't swap her. |
Amazing I was about to ask the same question when I saw this post. I already have my girl picked out. I have two sets of friends...one has two girls and the other has one girl. I have fallen in love with all of them. This is how I decided I wanted to start out with a girl. Lets face it I will end up with two eventually! But, my mom called me last night saying that a guy from work has two boys and one girl. He said that his boys are way more playful and his girl is stand offish (sp?). I am thinking it is all in the dog and the owner. Isn't it somewhat the process of socialization. Maybe this girl feels out numbered? The breeder told me that our little girl is extremely playful and doesn't have a shy or reserved bone in her body. Her sister on the other hand is very timid. I see all kinds of post of boys and girls and never has anyone pointed out any issues. I am hoping it is kind of like kids. My son and daughter are very different but I love them exactly the same!!!!!!!! Thanks for your thoughts! |

I have one of each and they are both precious in their own way. It seems like Bella is a little more mischievious than Louie ever was, but they are both just as loving. :p |
Vivi is a girl and she is the most loving and devoted dog I have ever known. She follows me everywhere and loves to snuggle and is the kissiest dog I know. She is also not a barker and has a very calm personality...these were qualities I was looking for. I really think it depends on the dog and not the gender. Make sure your breeder knows the qualities you are looking for so she/he can show you the best dog for you. :) |
Ruby and Bella are both girls and they are incredibaly loving, cuddly, and playful. I disagree with the the whole "females are bitchy and males are loving" because it's totally not true in my situation. I love both my girls and wouldn't trade them for the world. One of my girls has to always be on my lap or by my feet and I love it :) |
Girls are sweet, but IMO a neutered male is a love. I have 10 adult Yorkies, love them all, but my 2 neutered males are the sweetest & most loving of all. :animal36 |
I think that it bepends on the puppy as well. I have a male and he is very sweet and loving and calm. I am going to be getting a female this month! So I am very excited to see what kind of personality she is going to have!! Good luck! I think you are going to develop a very special bond with your puppy regardless of the sex you choose! Welcome to Yorkie Talk!! |
I believe it depends more on the dog than the sex. Both of ours are very loving. Zoe (5 month old female) moreso than Chase (7.5 year old neutered male), but I think it's more in the breeding. We did not know much when we got Chase. Bought him from a breeder we did not know, did not get the chance to see his parents. I asked, but they were not on site where we met her to see the puppy. My daughter was 12 years old and all gogo eyed over the puppy. Chase was cute and fortunately healthy, but he has a mean streak. He's loving and cuddly when he wants to be, but has bit me before, actually several times  . His hair is not as good either. Zoe is just a sweetheart. The breeder we bought her from breeds very high quality with the sweetest dispositions. She's a cuddlebug who loves to sit in our laps or cuddle next to me on the couch or bed. She's seldom more than a couple of feet from me when I'm at home. Basically, your best bet is to make sure you see the parents and find out what type personalities they have. Also, ask if some older siblings are on site for you to see, or ask for references, people who have bought the pup's older siblings. Do your homework and I don't think sex will matter nearly as much. Wishing you the very best!!!! :heart to :heart to |
Thank you all for your help! I appreciate all of your opinions and am trying my best to do all of my homework. I am so glad that I found this site so that I can read about your experiences and make the best for me and my new fur baby. I was going to ask breeders about the parents, but thought that of course everyone would say that theirs are the most loving, cuddly, ect. I am in Kansas City, MO and willing to drive to a great breeder if anyone can recomend one. Thank you all again!! I look forward to posting some super cute baby pictures soon! Sarah |
My little Rowdy (one year old) does not have a stubborn or obstinate bone in his body. He is as sweet as pie and he loves everyone, all dogs and people. He is BY FAR the sweetest dog I have even seen. He is extremely loving and gives lots of kisses, but he does not like to be cuddled close for very long periods of time. He will stand on my lap and put his paws on my chest and give me kisses kisses kisses. Then he will let me give him a quick hug, but if I try to hold him close for very long he pushes away. He will let me carry him all day though, if I want. He is just the best little boy I have ever seen. He minds me, he doesn't chew, he doesn't bark very much (except at the black lab next door) - I just don't know how he could be any better - except maybe if he let me hold him close and cuddle him longer! :D My only real problem is that he doesn't care a whit about food, so it is hard to teach him commands because he won't eat the treats!!! |
My little Bailey (1 yr. old) is the sweetest little boy. He loves to cuddle and follows me everywhere. I have to admit that I am a little nervous about the welcome home party for our newest addition in April, a 8 week old female (Morgan) because I too have heard the same thing about the temperment of a female vs. male Yorkie. Both of my furbabies are coming from the same mother and father and although the mother is very dominant, the father is very loving so I really think it does have to do with how they are interacted with during their first few weeks of life. I look forward to hearing about your expereinces in the coming weeks. |
1 Attachment(s) I agree that boy/girl is not the issue. You want be sure you have a great temperament and good health. I have three boys and three girls. The one that wants to be cuddled is the most cuddly at the moment. At my computer, I usually have one boy, Quattro, and one girl, Robyn, who have to be in my lap. Teddy likes to sit in my lap when I go potty. Wherever I am, they are all there. |

Chester is a lover dog, he likes to be next to me but he also has his independent and stubborn streak as well. His mom was a mellow dog and the dad I heard was hyper. Chester got lots of cuddling and loving as a puppy and still does, he loves to give kisses and likes to jump up and lay on my chest by my shoulder, he is also protective of me in a good way. |

Sketter came first and 5 mon. later Annie. I have to tell ya i think every furbaby is diff. My Sketter is a big momma's boy, he watches my every move and sticks right by me. He's very loving. Now Annie she has to be in the mood. But then again she's a daddies girl. So she hangs on him. Somebody told me that the one who cares for them the most is who the yorkie will get attached to. who knows, i'd say you will get alot of opinions from everyone and they will all be diff. You have to meet your baby and he/she will pick you. Good luck and welcome to YT :) :) :) :) |
This is a very interesting question, but as much as I love both my boy and my girl, I definitely see a distinction. Kenzy is my only male yorkie, but I had another female yorkie before Paddy. The girls are independent spirits, more laid back but ready to comment on everything. Paddy also has to have the last word! She is not very playful (neither was Wimbley) but Paddy just loves to lie in our laps and be held. But if you mess with her too much, she will jump down and get on the couch or in her bed. Kenzy on the other had is so incredibly playful and sweet. He is a mama's boy from day one and won't let me out of his sight. Just a different nature altogether. But I wonder if it is because of his size too. He is tiny, and Paddy is bigger and more confident. Hope that helps! |
I have boys and girls and they really are individual personalities regardless of sex. I have a sweet but sassy boy who talks back and a sweet boy who is as close to a human baby as a dog can get. I have 2 females that are very sweet. One is the pup of the other. The pup has her Mom's sweet disposition. A lady who lives nearby has a female that is so independant ... more like a cat...you hold her ONLY when she LETS you. They are all different. It also depends on how calm and consistent you are with them. A lot of problems derive from the owner. Though, like children, some are just going to be the way they are regardless :D Have fun and look through the threads here on YT, there is an abundance of helpful info.!!! |
I've got three Yorkies and they're all totally different. I've got two girls and a boy. At first the boy (Bobo) was running around a lot and couldn't sit still while the other two girls were quiet and cuddley. Now, as they all have gotten older, Bobo has calmed down A LOT and is now the couch potato, while Brownie and Cece (the girls) have gotten a lot more active. It just depends on the personality of the dog, not the gender..... |
hmmm....Zoe is the first yorkie that I have but I've had female beagles and I realized that females are calmer but it really does depend on the invidual dogs. I love my baby boy ZOe. He's a bundle of fun. |
Hello, I just adopted a beautiful little female yorkie on Jan. 31st. She is a cuddly, sweet little doll. She is put out in the morning for her piddle, and runs straight to my bedroom to wake me up with kisses. Her name is Pepper and she is just about 6 mos old. My question is about personality as well, or maybe this is more of an attitude issue.... This past Friday night she snapped at my husband, we figured it was a jealousy issue as I had my legs propped up on him while she was on his lap. But she nipped at his chin and got up on her back legs and scratched at his face. This happened again once with my daughter (13) and once with my son (8). As she hasn't done this to me yet I was wondering if it is a jealousy thing. Does she own me? LOL Any feedback would be much much appreciated, PeppersMom |

PeppersMom, I totally agree with Laura. You have to end it now before it becomes a huge problem. Her disposition in general sounds very sweet so you should be able to stop this behaviour pretty quickly. EVERYONE has to stick to the method you choose. Good luck :) |
Laura thanks for the quick reply: Yes, nipping it in the bud is my goal. All I did was used "no" and put her on the flor. I figured denying her my attention might be the best punishment for this sensitive little creature. Any other discipline methods??? I used the kennel the third time but I stongly believe this should be their safe haven, from big people etc, not a time-out... so to speak. And as for barking I've heard her bark just once, she is very quiet. She has growled and that was only when playing and when we had those 3 lil incidents. Thank goodness I don't have that to deal with as well...lol Thank you Lisa |
Thanks for the info Julz. As a new Yorkie owner I need all the help I can get... phew.. all "puppied out".... heading to bed to recooperate for another day of potty training Pepper. ;) |
Lisa, I think that sounds good! If it keeps up, it may call for more, but no need if it stops. You just have to be careful of unintentionally rewarding them for such bad behavior. I do rarely put one in 'time out' in their cage for fighting meanly with another. I don't actually think they consider it punishment, but it gives them a couple of minutes to regroup. If the fightee goes over to glare, I switch them out! Maybe your Hubby and kids need to spend a little personal time with her, too. She sounds like such a cutiepie! Good luck with potty training, too. ;) |
My mom and I have females from the same litter. Hers is very feisty and stubborn but lovable and loving as can be. Mine is also lovable and loving but in addition is very compliant and eager to please and laid back. They were with the mother and other litter mates to 12 weeks and they still see each other about twice a week. Just a difference in personality in individuals I guess. |
