Strange behaviour post teeth cleaning - YorkieTalk.com Forums

Hi All -

For those who have had their babies professionally cleaned at the vet, I have a question. My Toto had his teeth cleaned today under anaesthia and seemed fine, if a little groggy at first. Having him home this evening he has been incessantly whiny but in a tone that I have never heard from him before. (It's a bit like hearing a person who normally talks with a high pitched but smooth voice, and now has a chest cold.) I thought he was hungry given the fasting before the procedure so fed him twice but he continues to whine with no indication of what he needs from me. I stroke him and he whines still.

Should I just chalk it up to prolonged adjustment from the meds today or should I be worried something went wrong? (He's 2 years old and has never been under anesthetic before as I am anti-neuter, pro-leash)

I would absolutely call your vet and explain what your pup is doing and how he is acting. It may be nothing, but always good to have your vet weigh-in on what's going on...

My kid had his teeth cleaned several months ago, no reactions what so ever. I agree with JKpal, check in with your vet if you have not already done so.

Thank you both. I had him sleep next to me overnight to keep a close eye on him and he was back to normal on the morning. Still makes me think twice about having it done again in future so will be looking at other ways to keep his teeth clean (he wont let me near him with a toothbrush).

Do speak with your vet so you can be reassured. Dentals are a necessary evil for our pups.
I wish I had seen this yesterday...that high pitched whining often happens due to anesthesia. VERY common!

I'm glad he's back to himself again, but I would still mention his "reaction" to the vet the next time you visit so they know what they're dealing with...Piper has never had any type of reaction to any surgery (post spay, dental) other than she's a bit groggy for a short time and is usually mad at me for a bit longer! So happy your little one is good! Happiest of Holidays to you and yours!!

If you have ever had anesthesia, you can feel pretty out of it. Dogs are too, but the difference is that they don't know what has happened and can be anxious and confused. When they come out of anesthesia, they make some really crazy sounds at the vet. By the time we get them, they are more with it but still often whine a lot.

I’m glad he is doing better. I have heard of many dogs doing that. Sadly nothing will clean under the gum line other then a dental so they are just one of those things that has to happen.
