Parti Yorkie Colorado - HELP
 

I am looking into purchasing a parti yorkie. I am struggling with the fact that you place a deposit and pick a puppy based on a picture at a tiny age, you don't know their personality. Are the good ol days of going to pick out a puppy based on interactions over?

Last time I got a dog, I saw lots of various ones and passed on lots of them based on their personality and not being a good fit. Because of that, I took my time and got the best dog ever.

The one time I got a dog, based on a picture not seeing it in person. I got screwed and the dog was unhealthy and died within a year.

I am also looking for recommendations for breeders in Colorado.

I have seen many members having to buy puppies based on a picture only and having to put a deposit down. That would not work out for me. Like you, I need to see the personality of the puppy. Puppies features, coat color change day to day, how would one even know if they got the puppy in the picture.

Hang in there, wait until you find a breeder that will let you see the puppies, this is going to be tough now with this Pandemic.

Thank you. I am researching now to find a good breeder with a good health guarantee. Given the fact I have been lied to before, I am covering my basis. This whole thing is crazy! You don't know what the puppy is going to look like at 1 week old? The oldest I found so far is three weeks old.

I wouldn’t buy a puppy without first seeing them in person. A lot of people are getting scammed that way.

I agree, but I can't seem to find any one that does that in Colorado.

I would never purchase a dog w/o meeting the breeder in their home, yard, seeing the parents in person and the whole litter to assess the overall health of each sibling. Then, I need to be able to spend time with the pup I'm thinking of choosing there at the breeder's home, talking to the breeder, asking questions, getting an overall impression of their interest in their dogs, me, my history w/dogs, etc. I've seen a brain-damaged puppy or two at breeder's homes and they just behave differently, will never make the pet you hope to have. I have fostered two grown brain-damaged dogs and believe me, they do not come around, forever remain rather unconnected in the way you'd really want of your dog. Some 'toy' dogs are absolutely huge as puppies so you know the sales job has been misrepresented, other pups act totally weird, odd, dashing under furniture and staying there, uncurious and scared. Others have ear leather so thick it will never stand, lack the muscles to be able to hold them up, eyes may be pus-filled or nose runny, tummies with hernias, hicks in the gait, the tails carried too low, too proud, ears too wideset, eyes narrowly set, all kinds of things a young picture will never tell you. One pup had a tongue so long it hung out of its little mouth! And pictures never reveal the dogs true personality which you should know as well as possible before placing any deposit and then being certain you know that's going to be the pup you actually pick up weeks later. Too many other reasons to list why you MUST meet your breeders and dogs at their homes before choosing your pet for the next 15 years.

Pictures may be faked and how do you even know you will get a dog? Would never get my dog w/out meeting it, its siblings, parents, breeder.

Thank you for confirming my hesitation! That is why I want to stick with someone in Colorado, so I have the ability to see them. Where do people find the reputable breeders?

I would contact the closest AKC Yorkshire Terrier club and ask them for names of reputable breeders, correspond with all you can and then network from there. Google local dog shows - even past ones to see if you can find names of breeders of show dogs, contact them by kennel name and work outward from your correspondence and conversations. Go by the questions they ask of you to assess your worthiness as a potential owner of one of their dogs. If they aren't fussy about potential buyers, want to know an awful lot about you, are open to showing you their breeding facilities, etc., don't do business with them. They are in breeding just for the money or whatever, but don't care about the home their dogs go into or may be hiding puppy mill type facilities. Often, if you don't want to pay top price for a show breeder's pet quality dogs, they will often tell you of a friend who is a type of hobby breeder the show breeder recommends who is reputable, has some good, quality dogs; or even another show breeder who happens to have a pup or two they cannot show and need to find a good home for. Networking is the best way to find a few good, reputable breeders you can talk with, then visit one day and find your next little love.

Have you tried the AKC website and puppy finder?

The only problem is many show breeders find Parti yorkies to be controversial and don’t generally breed them since they can’t be shown.

I stay FAR away from Puppy finder. That is where I found my trainwreck last time. The breeder reviews were great on there. Well when I went to put my review for the breeder, she took it down. I had all the evidence that my dog was not healthy, vet bills ect and Puppy Finder still took it down.

I emailed a few people on AKC, haven't heard back.

It just seems like so many people have moved to deposits on dogs at weeks old and you wouldn't haven't a chance of "picking them out" based on interactions.

Yes, I did see that it can spark some anger in people. We are all entitled to our own opinions and I hope people can see it that way.

I have a chocolate and always wanted one and people have issues with those too. So no judgment here. I actually saw a local breeder posting Ollie my chocolate at almost 6 months saying she couldn’t get anyone to buy him because he was bigger. It worked great for me because my pups are all bigger at 16 and 14 pounds.
