Walking your yorkies
 

When I watch my friend's yorkie, I walk him three times a day.. even rainy day because that is what my friend does everyday for her dogs. So I thought it is what everyone does. Then I learned that some people walk their yorkies a couple times a week. Which means... you let your yorkies poop at home? I am just curious!

Yep, Rowdy poops at home. He has a doggie door into a fenced yard and can go in and out anytime he wants. We do walk him but only about once per day or every other day.

It is too cold here for us to walk everyday. Both of mine are potty trained to use pads so that is not an issue and days that we can't walk we play a lot inside for exercise and they go to daycare during the day! When it is warm we go for walks twice a day morning and evening!

Boston is really cold too... My friend's yorkie is not fully potty tained.. and her shih tzu wouldn't go to poop until she takes her outside.. I can see the importance of potty training! :) for cold days in New England!

When Willow comes home i will be walking her atleast once per day if weather permits. As far as pooping at home yes i would prefer her to poop at home. I hate seeing my neighbors dogs poop in my yard(they let them out to run unsupervised all hours of the night too) If Willow poos in someone else yard i will pick it up To me its the right thing to do.

Thor gets walked at least twice a day. He also has access to a big back yard, where he poops! :) But yes, he gets walks in the rain, or whatever the weather is. I can't wait for snow!!

I prefer my future dog to be well potty tained and could poop and pee at appropriate place.. pee pad etc.. but it would been so great if he could go to toilet and poop and flush it.. That would be perfect :D I know I am dreaming

Bouncer won't even get halfway around the block before he "puts on the brakes" He literally sticks his front feet out, sits his butt down and will not walk. lmao anywhere else he will, but not around the block. haha So he only gets walked when we go to get lunch at work.

It's too cold for walks here right now, although we got a 50 degree day last week and went for a walk. When it's warm I take him for a walk after work for sure, sometimes before work if we wake up early and sometimes if he's lucky my husband will take him at lunch time. Otherwise, he is housetrained and goes out the front door on a 26 foot leash and does his thing. Yep, even in the rain and snow. We shoveled the yard for him! He doesn't mind the cold or snow, it's his humans who don't like it! So he poops in the front yard and I pick it up every 2 days or so.

I take my pup out only occasionally - but regardless of the weather - cold, wet, rainy - whatever - he fights to stay outside.

I did take him out a couple times when it was too cold for me. He was wearing a coat - and definitely wanted to stay out longer than I did.

But for now we are working on the pee pee pads...I'd say a few more years and Reyna should get it! hehe :aimeeyork

We also have a doggy door and a huge yard with 8 - 10 foot fence - board on board. The three gates are padlocked shut as we found one open one day. Since the pups were babies, we took them to the back part of the yard (we call it the 'big yard', where we sit and watch them run and play. They love the sprinklers and the rain. We had one 3 day freeze, otherwise the weather is usually good and they love to be outside playing in the bushes and flowers. We also have a chain-link fenced dog-run turned garden which they love to get in and bark at each other through the fence. We only walk Bronx extra as he put on 3 pounds after being neutered and on steroids for an ear infection.

Gus does his biz here at home. We sometimes go for walks but it's been so dry and windy here. My skin is so dry and gets even worse evertime I have to walk out the door. Yesterday I was cleaning the pool because of all the damn wind. It's a mess! No sooner after I clean it, it's a mess again and doesn't even look like I cleaned it at all. And mean while my skin is taking a beating. And my poor Gus comes in looking like a little puff ball. His hair gets so staticy every time he comes in from being outside. I have to remember to rub him down with faberic softener sheets before I pet him because I get shocked everytime. No walks till this dry air and wind goes away for us. And every time I have to take him out to the yard to do his thing, I lube up with face cream first so that it doent get worse and have a sheet ready to rub him down when he comes in!

Joey poops in the backyard. If he poops on a walk, I pick it up and dispose of it. You do, too, don't you? So, one is as nasty as the other!

I fenced in my backyard. I don't have a doggy door because I have some inside only cats that would use it too. The dogs let me know when the want to go out. They have 1/2 acres yard to romp and run in. :D

I dont walk Chachi and Jewels when its cold outside. When the weather is better I walk them once a day.

Mine get a walk everyday, after lunch,
the rest of the day they can go out in a small fenced yard, i cant let them loose in the garden as its not fenced!
but they do so love their walks :) :)

We have also had a LOT of dry and windy weather. I know what you mean about the pool, we also have a lot of trees and each gust seems to whirl all debris into the pool. I use a LOT of lotion and conditioner. I use spray conditioner on the pups until their hair is almost greasy by bath day.

I walk Ella and Timber three times a day for sure because i live in a townhouse. She loves to run around out there with all the other dogs. Do any of your yorkies spin around right before they have to poop? She always does, it's cute.

She is scared of doggy doors though, any good advice on training them to use them?

Mine goes on a puppy pad. Its too cold out there now for daily walks. This does make me lazy though and she doesn't get out as often as she should. I saw on the dog whisperer he recommends to teach your dog how to use a treadmill that way they can walk off some energy. I am going to look into doing that for her. Because we all know yorkies have WAYYY too much energy even after u take them on a walk.

I haven't walked Zoe yet but is planning to. Is it bad to have them train on wee wee pads forever or should I eventually change it to going out?

We have a doggie door and the girls have a small fenced in area to potty in and then on really pretty days they get to play in the "big back yard" and run like crazy....I try to take them on walks if the weather is not to cold or windy (Sailor hates the wind)...otherwise they potty in their area!!!

Gracie and Sam walk every day except in ice, rain or snow. It is too hard to get them dry after going out under those conditions. They are trained to pee pads. That sure beats having to go outside at 2am in two feet of snow.

Chewie walks 3 times a day in the cold weather...

-Morning (right before I leave for work)
-Early Evening (right when we get home from work)
-Bedtime (right before we goto bed)

We all bundle up and walk around outside. He gets distracted in the snow, but enjoys getting out to see his "buddies" that live on the block - The mastif and poodle across the street, the chi-mix around the corner, etc...

He definately needs the puffy coat when we go out in the cold - which gets to be a pain, as the anatomy of male dogs and the warmer winter coats available do not always mix well. But that's what washing machines are for!

Anyways, in the warmer weather we have an "after dinner" walk as well. But Chewie isn't interested in that "bonus" walk in the cold weather.

He certainly gets down to business quickly in the snow/sleet/cold. Our walks are much shorter - but quite productive! Oh, we all can't wait for warmer weather to run around in the field and get some good exercise!

We've thought about pee-pads. But he's crated during the day, and aside from the first 2 or so accidents when we brought him home with us we haven't had a single problem at our house with him... So we figure that we shouldn't mess with success!

Sadie goes in the rocks. We decorate our yards with lots of rock in my area, and it is perfect. She plays in the grass, and does her business in the rocks.

I also have a large RV parking strip, that is gravel, and she goes there. I am always with her, so I pick it up with those cheap baggies that don't zip at the tops.

It gets very cold here, so I keep the bags in every coat pocket.

If it gets warmer during the day (today we hit 51 which is just unreal), she goes for a walk.

What really bothers me is that my neighbors have a big dog, and they allow it to do its thing on my RV strip. They let it out real late at night, or very early in the mornings. So, I am left to pick it up.

I am waiting for the perfect opportunity to approach them, but I hate doing this type of thing.

What makes them think their dog can have the run of the neighborhood, when my dog is always leashed, and I immediately clean up after me.

Ticks me off! Sorry, I had to vent. :)

OMG! I love your yard. I wish I had one that big and pretty to. Mine is probably the size of your dog run, you know how newer homes are. I can't leave out my desire to have those pups running in mine to. Thanks for the pics. :thumbup:

I got Twinkie in November and the weather has been really cold and snowy here in Germany ever since. Although we have a yard both in front and in the back of the house the snow level is high and I would have a hard time finding her since she is still very small. So I have wee pads for her "needs"in the house.
Hopefully the weather will improve in the following months. I cant wait to take her out for a long walk.
She also gets her excerise in the house for the time being.

We have a doggie door, so Edie goes outside to our fenced yard, winter and summer. She is in and out all the time, but when it is VERY cold (<10 deg F) I put her coat on and make her go outside several times during the day so there are no accidents indoors. In the winter, I shovel the snow out of a part of the back yard so she doesn't get buried (I know, Eddie's Dad, this is wimpy). We don't walk much at all in the winter, but that's because I don't like the cold. I think Edie would be up for anything.

Mine is like that too, she's trained to go potty outside and she won't do anything unless she can do it on the edge of the sidewalk ;)
