Feeding Schedule I'm wanting to get Gidget on a regular meal schedule. Up until now, she's been "grazing" all day long. I'd like to get her on a morning and evening meal schedule. What is the latest you feed the evening meal. Do you give any kind of treat at bedtime. |
I feed mine twice a day mostly between 5 am - 8 am in the morning based on when I go to work and in the evening around 6 pm. However if I am home they want to eat earlier no later than 5 pm. They love their routine and know when to wake me up when it is feeding time. The hardest part is when the clocks change because they don't know the time difference. |
Mike eats 3 times on schedule, dinner is around 8 pm and I save few pieces of kibble to give him before bed. If I don't give it he wakes up earlier for food. I think schedule is great for appetite stimulation. |
I'm a big fan of free feeding. I have at least 2 that are pickers and would never eat enough if I tried to limit it to certain times a day. I'm sure its possible but just not something I'm into. I kinda liken it to if I'm hungry between meals I can go get a snack but they can't. Also I think Penny was not given much food when she was with her previous owners so she kinda goes into a panic if there is not food. |

Cody eats at 6AM and 4PM, at 8PM he gets a treat after he has gone through all his commands and tricks. I do this because all commands and tricks are not used everyday, to keep everything fresh in his brain we go through it all nightly. Schedules with dogs are the best way to go and dogs like routines ;) |

My first Yorkie was a grazer and it worked fine for him; however, he didn't go with me everywhere I went during the day. Gidget does so her grazing doesn't usually start until 2 or 3:00 in the afternoon. Sometimes, I leave the house around 1:00 and don't get back until 6 or 7:00, which means she hasn't had anything to eat since the night before. Don't like that idea at all. So, I put her food out this morning (1/2 her daily amount). She finally ate it around 3:00. Put the other 1/2 out and will take it up at 8:00 even if she hasn't eaten it all. Will be rough for a couple of days but she'll soon learn to eat the food when it's out because it might not be there later. |

Yes, Yorkies are stubborn but they'll eat dirt before they will starve. |

I feed mine three times a day. 7:30am 12:30pm and 6:30pm. I wished I could just leave a bowl of food out but she would gobble it down. If she got into a bag of food she would pig out , she loves her food. Susan |
Twice a day, at vet's insistence. Sometimes, I sneak Fabian some chicken or blueberries at lunch because otherwise he's ravenous by the time I get home from work at the end of the day. No matter the quantity put out, he eats like he's just breaking a month-long fast, so grazing doesn't work for us either. |

[QUOTE=Lovetodream88;4798476]Oh yeah I totally get it. My boys are weird and like dog food over human food which I had never seen before. I’m a hugely stubborn person but the pups are my weakness and they will out stubborn me every time lol.[/QUOT I'm still sticking to my guns. Gidget has met her match in stubbornness. |

Well, I did it. This is day #3 and Gidget has finally decided to eat her 2 meals a day. I divided her daily amount in two meals; one in the morning and one in the evening. What veggies and/or fruit can I give her as a treat before bedtime. Don't want to use the treats you buy at the pet store. Don't feel like they're the best thing to feed her on a regular schedule. |
Frozen green cut beans, thawed or frozen, no calories in them or, boil one boneless chicken cutlet another calorie free food, give as much as you feel she needs, the rest wrap up and put in fridge for the next night, frozen peas or carrots have calories, if you're not a calorie counter you can these. Also frozen cauliflower, frozen, thawed or cooked a bit. Fruit you have a large selection, just to name a few, apples, banana, blueberry's, cantaloupe. Do not buy the pieces of melon or other pieces of fruit sold in plastic containers the supermarkets sell. I recently read an article they can cause Salmonella. You can go online and search for fruits and veggies safe for dogs because not all fruits and veggies are safe. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...LzAtsUBqwoTHpl |
Thanks, Matese. |

My girls get a home prepared meal between 10 am and noon for brunch and between 6 and 8 pm for dinner. When I was feeding kibble I would have loved to free feed, but Lollie is a food hog and Lacie is Ms. Picky eater. |
I am a huge fan of scheduled feeding. I do not like free feeding at all especially with multiples, personally. You don't know how much one is eating on a daily basis, it is not as easy to tell when one is getting more than the other, if one is sick or feeling under the weather, etc. I also feed mixed with canned food or real food like chicken or cod so it is not something i can just leave out all day. I feed Jackson and Lola 3x a day usually. The 3x started after Jackson had pancreatitis and IBD and was always hungry. We initially had to feed 4-5 small meals per day. But now we are down to 3 times. On the week days when I work, they get fed breakfast at 7:45am, dinner at 4:45pm ish and again around 8:30pm ish w/ a small meal of kibble. |

I think we should all do what is best for our babies and what works in our homes. If Thumper wasn't a food hound I would do it. I tried it once with Bella and she also ate all the food in one sitting. |
